| dante424202-28-05, 09:22 AM | Not long ago, several members of the City Council had decided to try a new experiment. In the past whenever a complex problem developed in Sharn the City Watch was forced to call in one of the elite units to deal with the problem. The Red Cloaks tended to cruch whatever the problem was and lacked subtlety, the Black Book always was trying to attach a magical conclusion to everything and most importantly, the Citadel tended to uncover dubious activities that the Council wanted to not come to light. With the level of graft that the city was involved in, and the number of anti-royalist on the council, they felt they needed another solution that did not invlove outsiders lurking around. To that end, they decided to create a Special Case division of the Sharn City Watch. This group would be responsible for most complex high profile cases that needed to be dealt with. It would make the city look good, keep the Citadel out of the councilors private business and keep the investigators firmly under the thumb of the City Council. The party started off being gathered together along with 15 other people at the Central Watch tower in Central Plateau. The were informed that they had been selected for the special case squad and were now off all other assignments. Each Garrison would be the host to one of these squads of five troops. As the party mingled it became obvious that the selection was fairly diverse. Among the many people the met was a Hobgoblin named Dra'klam, a hafling called Talis Boromar and a very unsubtle changeling that they met several times under various guises. As the evening progressed, the Commander of the Watch came and gave every one thier assignments. All the members of the party were assigned to the same Garrison, under Ilyana ir'Talan in the Black Gate Garrison in Tavick's Landing. They departed immediatley with Ilyana to Black Gate. As they transited to the garrison, they party questioned Ilyana as to what thier duties were to be. She informed them that they could be certain that they would not have to deal with anything more strenuous than dealing with small children who were stealing candy, something Druzghilli seemed very excited about. Ilyana seemed fairly upset that Tessa had chosen to give up her role as a librarian at her advanced age to take up crime fighting. In addition, Ilyana made it very clear to Tessa that she was not about to enudure the toungue lashing her aunt would give her if anything befell her good friend, Tessa. With that in mind Ilyana informed the party that they could expect a very dull assignment. Once they arrived at the Black Gate, they were introduced to the Captain of the garrison and shown to thier barracks. As they had no assignments, they were free until they had to report in the morning. Whisper suggested that he show them around the Ward and find them a good place to eat. They spent the evening getting to know one another at a small hole in the wall in the Cyrian refugee slums, before turning in for the night. |
| dante424202-28-05, 09:49 AM | The next morning dawned, and the party met with the Captain in the a small briefing room. Apparently they had thier first assignment and the orders had come straight from the City Council. The captain himself was confused as to how this person had the clout in the council to get the party assigned to his case, but he had his orders. Apparently sometime yesterday, a Karrnathian merchant arrived in the city looking to do some trading. He sent his journeyman Galliad out to set up appointments with various merchants while he went to go rest and find lodging. The problem arose when Galliad never returned. A few minutes later, the merchant himself arrived in the room. He was obviously Karrnathian by his accent, but aside from that there was little distinguishing him. He did however wear a set of eight copper rings, one on each finger. Tessa immediatley recognized teh rings as belong to some elite trading organization that she had heard rumors of. The merchant proceeded to tell his story. He had arrived in town looking to sell some specialized honey that he had cultivated and purchase some vanilla from a merchant in town. He sent Galliad out to set up appointments with these merchants, and sent his trading contracts with Galliad. The contracts had been notarized by House Sivis, and listed the agreed apon price of teh honey and the vanilla. The Karrnathian went on to explain that things had changed in Sharn since he set up these contracts. Several shipments of vanilla from Xendrik had been lost at sea, and the vanilla he was trying to purchase is now worth twice what the contracts stipulate. In addition, the man he was to sell the honey too, Arasta, has suffered soem set backs and wants to lower the purchase price. With out the notarized trade documents, the merchanst will not honor thier agreements, and he stands to loose a vast sum of money. the party has been order to recover all of his trade documents for him and to do it quickly. The party immediately left and headed to Tavik's Market, where both merchants were located. After questioning around, they went thier seperate ways to question the merchants. Whisper went directly to the booth of Arasta, to question him, while the rest of teh party went to question the merchants of Greater Galleon. When Whisper arrived, there was a large man outside the booth, writing in a book. He learned that this was Arasta's scribe and that the master was inside the stall. Arasta soon emerged and began to enter into discussion with Whisper. One thing that disturbed him was that the Karrnathian mechant described Arasta as a large man, but this man was fairly thin. As he began to question him, he learned that Galliad had come by to make an appointment but left soon after. Arasta himself did not meet with the man, but his scribe set up an appointment for the following day. The rest of the party in the meantime was trying to find the Greater Galleon Trading Company. The soon discovered it inside on of the vast towers of Sharn. There was a vast crowd of people gathered around the open window, all of them bidding on a supply of vanilla. Once the crowd disbanded, the group opened up a conversation with the merchant who owned Greater Galleon. He informed them that he did meet with Galliad, had an appointment for the following day and knew nothing else. With some further questioning, the party learned that if forced to honor the contracts, this man would take a loss of more than 30,000gp. With no other questions to ask, the party returned to the central market to meet Whisper. As the party gathered to discuss thier latest information, across town another scene was unfolding that was very different........... As the rain drizzles from the skies of Sharn, a short hafling with luxurious black hair steps onto a covered balcony. He stares out at the city and then looks downward into crowds on the streets and bridges below. "These documents could be worth considerable money," he says without turning from vantage point. "To the right people of course. Ask around, see who might want these and how much they'll pay. Make sure to check with the shuffler. She may want them." "What about the merchandise," a second, softer female voice asks. "Should we try and recover it? Based on these documents, there is a lot of money involved." "If we can do it subtlety, yes. But I do not want those low breed bastards from Daask getting in on this," he snarled in reply. "Understand?" "Of course. Subtlety is my name." "See that this is taken care of," the hafling says dismissively. He continues to stare out at the city, watching the masses of people mingle about in the dark dreary gloom that is known as Sharn |
