How do you use a Eberron shard to store a spell like jump? How is it done?

What I am taking about is page 265 of ECS under Eberron Shard Items.
The way I understand it is I cast the spell I wish to store on a attuned Eberron shard(under Crafting Eberron Shard Items page 265 of ECS), but this does not sound right. I am playing a Dustblade other wise I would just buy a Pearl of Power.

Basically, you can't. Eberron shards have an affinity for magic, thus, they can sometimes be used as spellbooks and work remarkably well in crafting spell storing items rings of counterspells and the like, but you can't just plug a spell in it.

Are you wanting access to spells not on the duskblade list or wanting to be able to retrieve used spell slots?

If it's the second then look at p. 164 of the Magic Item Compendium. There's an item called a Memento Magica that works similarly to a Pearl of Power but for spontaneous casters.

The closest analog I can think of for this is found in the Expedition to Undermountain adventure. Yup, check it out if you don't believe me. In the back, they describe a particular type of crystal that has an affinity for storing magic, and how you can make an expendible item out of them with Craft Wondrous Item.

Frankly, it's kinda broken IMO, as you this basically invalidates the entire Brew Potion feat (allowing you to make potions that do not provoke AoO's when being used for the same old price). I'd recommend at least upping the price a little or something.

I use an eternal wand for spells that are not on my spell list. I am about to make a adamantine sword and I was going to put the Eberron shard in the hilt, the sword will have a wand chamber and it will be a minor schemas.:plotting:

As in, they are what you normally make magical items out of. In my game, a Pearl of Power would actually be made out of an Eberron shard, but it still has to be specifically made into a Pearl (Shard?) of Power.

In my games at least, I require dragonshards as a key component of *ALL* magical items. From ground up dragonshard dust in the special ink needed to scribe scrolls, to the gemstone set in the hilt of a magic sword, to whatever else. They're the batteries that make magic items work. By themselves, they're useless, just pretty rocks. Its only when you plug 'em into something designed to use them that their effects become obvious.I use an eternal wand for spells that are not on my spell list. Not if the spell is on my spell list.

If you have just one level in spell casting class, the feat Practiced Spellcaster and at least four levels in any other class, then you can use any minor schemas with up to level 3 spells without a check as long as the spell is on your spell list. Now add in eternal wands and now you can do a far amount of spell casting.:D The down side it cost a lot of gold.:( The up side it is like you took about 5 levels in a spell casting class and it only cost you one level in a spell casting class, one feat, and about 30,000gp one time cost.:smirk:

This trick can be used on most charcters without much of a problem. This is the fighters way of being a spell caster without realy being one.

Which means you still have caster level checks and the like. And if memory serves, Practiced Spellcaster only applies to spells you can normally cast, they don't bump your spellcaster levels for activating things like scrolls.

So, yeah, you could go that route, just watch out for the very high chance that you will suffer a misshap. Anywho, what good is Practiced Spellcaster for Schema anyway? Again, if memory serves, like a scroll, the level of the stored spell is set, it doesn't matter if you're lvl 1 or lvl 20, its still only going to shoot 1 magic missle if thats the way it was designed...

It does not affect spells per a day and spells known. It does say have my caster level inceased by 4. Complete Arcane page 82.:teach:

Most of the time only a spellcaster who is dipping in some thing would take this feat and even then there are better feats for most casters. Why spend a feat which most casters have very few of in the first place get this feat which only gives a bit more power. Why would they buy a minor schemas when they well be able cast it them self without spending the gold or the feat.:detect:

You only have to have make a caster level check if the CL of the minor schemas is higher than yours. You were only looking at the most aparent uses for the feat.:lightbulb

So it does in fact work, cost a lot but works.

Thank for the help with the Eberron shard by the way.
