| Pallis08-01-05, 07:26 PM | Just been DMing a game where the PCs came across a dead changeling and wanted to know who he was. I was uncertain whether Changelings would have official I.D papers...what with them being Changelings and all...I mean, what's the point, they might as well have half a dozen... In fact, now I think about it, are I.D cards and travelling papers compulsory, (I note they'd be handy for a run-in with the city watch) or are they mainly used by the travelling population when crossing national borders? Any help, as always, greatly appreciated! :lightbulb |
| Earthbinder08-01-05, 07:49 PM | Magic item: Changeling Papers - Changeling only -30% These papers are attuned to the changeling for whom they are made, a cup of the changelings blood must be used during their creation as well as a DC15 forgery check these papers change to match the current Persona that the changeling is emulating, they only reveal what the changeling knows about the subject. Construction: Wondrous item, Use activated. Continuous -30% CL 2nd, Disguise Self Cost: 2100gp, 1050gp+ 84xp +special (see above) or high ranks in forgery |
| Raziel_Brokodar08-01-05, 07:59 PM | I thought of a wonderous item for changelings, "Identification of Many Faces" or something like that... a magic ID which changes to suit your appearance, and possibly whatever name you call yourself in that form... hmmm.. something to think about... :lightbulb |

Naturally, ID papers for "identities" must be forged, so Changelings probably turn to organizations of Changelings (ie. The Tyrants, The Cabinet of Faces) or other not-so-savory avenues to acquire forged documents. OTOH, if the Changeling is an official of a government (ie. A Dark Lantern, member of a city watch) or is in the good graces of a body of authority, the organization may acquire the forged documents in the intrests of helping the Changeling further the interests of that particular organization. Magical documents are a good idea, but don't forget that magic is tightly woven into Eberron society and that the existance of Changelings isn't exactly a secret. Nations such as Aundair or Breland probably have magic woven into their security measures, and may use magical means to authenticate ID papers. There is always a risk of discovery, but tempting fate is the stock & trade of a Changeling, IMO. |

Some members of House Sivis make them for free money. Although if it s found out about, they get kicked out of the House. |

Your typical law abiding changeling ID will have their true form (remember they do have a form they revert to naturally when they die). Some lucky changelings will also have their primary persona on the ID to avoid the possible humiliation of having to change for an ID check. Guard: ID please Changeling hands over ID. Guard: I need to see your real face. Changeling blushes but complies. Guard: OK move along now. As for who needs to carry ID it would depend on where you are. Places like Karrnath and Thrane probably require anyone travelling to have their papers, particularly warforged. Zilargo, with their beaurocracy and want of any and all knowledge probably require detailed travel plans but wouldn't be that picky about the actual ID (they could find out who you are easily enough). Obvious foreigners in Breland and Aundair would possibly be pulled up and asked for papers. |

| CzarGarrett08-02-05, 09:37 AM | I would definately try to make friends with a disgruntled member of House Sivis if I were a Changeling. Free ID's across the board. Or just steal someone else's and mimic them as best I could. |
| Steelpunk08-02-05, 04:26 PM | The changeling in our party is a pretty good forger in her own right, and has a reliable means of procuring blank marked papers to create her own I.D. While travelling in a specific persona, she keeps the papers for that persona on hand, and the papers for other identities are hidden away in a secret smuggling bag she keeps on her. Of course, finding a dead changeling with I.D. papers belonging to one of their personas could make for a great hook - the PCs try and track down the person identified on the papers, and get drawn into some intrigue or another. |
