I want to start a discussion about one of the most unique design concepts in the Eberron sourcebook - the comic style illustrations it the begining of each chapter. In my opinion the idea is great - they are not only truly distinctive visuals, unique to Eberron sourcebooks, but also a great way to add more flavor to the setting and almost every one of them inspires me for an exciting Eberronish adventure. That thing said, I find the quality somewhat fluctuating. Even the drawing style and coloring technique differ. I suppose this is inevitable, since they are work of different artists, but still... For example, when I first opened my ECS months ago, I was appaled by the picture on page 10. On the other hand, I'm in love with some other heading illustrations - the one on page 118 is simply beautiful. Also I find the concept of most very cool - my favorite is the pulpish scene on page 226 (Emerald Claw soldiers are way better that the Kill Bill's "Crazy 88").

How about you? Do you find these artworks great or think they are waste of pages? Which are your favorites in the ECS and Sharn Sourcebooks? Which you don't like, and why?

Actually, a lot of those illustrations kind of reminded me of Mike Mignolia's work (he was the one that created Hellboy). Some are also reminiscent of Oeming's work from Powers.

I love them too. They really do set the tone and I really hope they continue for all the Eberron books.

Just a clarification - I meant "unique" as in "unique in the Wizards' line of products".

I'm sorry but I dont' love them... Most of them are good works and I like it but I dont' feel they catch the esence of Eberron. (I've only seen the ECS, not Sharn) I would prefer some draws (good draws, of course) of some of the characters or some of the places...

As an artist, dnd fan, and comic book lover I have to say that I enjoy the art immensly. Art is instrumental in setting the tone of any campaign. Like the expression goes, "a picture is worth a thousand words."

I've been a fan of comics even before I discovered D & D, and so I'm naturally drawn to this artwork. It's definitely memorable, as I can recall most of the pieces that appeard in the ECS and City of Towers.

Of them, my favorites (in no particular order) are:

The approach to Argonessen--distant dragons never seemed so menacing

Citadel agend Vs. the Emerald claw--the shocked soldier staring at this sliced hand is haunting

Elf assassins descending on House Thuranni (or is it Phiarlan?)--no violence depicted, but it leaves no doubt that someone is about to breathe his or her last

Good stuff; I hope that it continues in future releases. I wonder if Wizards has explored the possiblity of an Eberron comic...?

I actually think there is one, not sure though.
