Characters in Eberron [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-03-06, 05:17 PM I was told that my character background wasn't very Eberron-ish, and I was curious if anyone here could be of any assistance. I posted this in the character development thread but I didn't get much of a responce. Also if there are any other DnD books that would help me get a better grasp of how Eberron is (due to the fact that I spend almost all of my time playing in the forgotten realms).

About the background, I'd like to keep the stroy the same but just add some flavor to it.

Julius was born to a well to do family high up in House Deneith, and when he manifested a dragon mark his parents were ecstatic. This would be their chance to raise their position within the house. And as soon as he reached the proper age he was sent off to be trained as a warrior, but Julius objected saying that he wanted to be a priest. His parents allowed this outrageous demand so happy they were that he was a dragon marked. But soon after Julius was sent off, he began to see what the church was really like. It was utter corrupted, the high priests accepted kickbacks to look the other way when it came to church affairs. This behavior sickened Julius, how could these people who were supposed to be devoted to their god be such hypocrites. Julius was about to go and talk to the head priest and tell him of his decision to drop out of the priest hood, but when he knocked on the priest's chambers no one answered. Julius then left the temple and went to the local inn, one that the priest frequented with the companionship of young ladies, to see if he was there. When he arrived he saw there the priest standing in a corner having obviously been drinking. When he saw the boy he staggered over to him and began to scold him for leaving the temple. In a drunken rage he began to beat Julius, after what felt like hours but was surly only a minute or so, a commanding presence materialized behind the priest and threw him to the ground. Julius cowered before the man, fearing the worst. When the man spoke his voice was almost angelic, yet deep in its tones. He told him there was no reason for him to be scared any longer. When Julius inquired about who the man was he answered that he was a Templar of the Silver Flame. Soon after Julius's parents learned of what had happened, and out of shame they disowned him, completely cutting him off. He had nowhere to turn, nowhere to go; he began to reflect on what he had seen in his life. The world thrived for money, and the priesthood was nothing but a means to an end. It was no longer about doing good, or helping anyone. He became a recluse a wandering lost person. He took odd jobs as a caravan escort, a guard for a merchant or wherever else he could find work. Till one day when he made his way to Flamekeep, the location of the Cathedral of the Silver Flame, on a caravan as one of its escorts. It was here that he would reaffirm his faith in the Silver Flame and heed the calling, to become a Templar, the group within the church that is charged with defeating evil and rooting out heresy in the church.

02-03-06, 06:26 PM Sounds like this could fit in Eberron to me. Eberron is described as pulp noir which allows for a wide array of playing styles. Your DM may just have a different vision of Eberron than this.

The only hangup I see is the crusade to weed out corruption in the Church is a personal goal for the character that may not mesh well with a group of adventurers. But there are ways it could.

02-03-06, 07:18 PM at a glance it seems like a decent enough, well-fitting background to me. you may want to ask your fellow players if they're smoking crack.

02-03-06, 08:17 PM Very good start, but I have a few questions: what nation did Julius grow up in, or did his family move around a lot? Where did Julius join the priesthood (of the Silver Flame, I'm guessing). What class was Julius studying for initially (keep in mind that clerics are warriors of the church)? Expert, adept, cloistered cleric (from Unearthed Arcana)? What exactly was it about the incident in the tavern that caused Julius's parents to feel shame?
