Sorry, a bit of an Exalted reference on becoming a monk.

But, my question is... Why would a WF choose the razor over the coin...

A WF would not be as likely to be made as one, in my opinion; so I think they would have to choose the path <Most WF Monks would prolly be multi-classing>.

I see the path to enlightment as a driving factor; and depending upon how they felt about the war... they might be seeking penitence through peace.

But the average factors in becoming a monk are missing, in that you weren't orphaned and left in a monastery... Or you weren't given by your parents to be trained...

How would the various monastic orders see WF; and what would be the requirements to join?

WF who were multi-classing... how would they come to the idea that using their fists would be better than a weapon? Effeciency, and all.

I love the mechanics of a WF, and I want to play one badly. But, I can't see many ideas behind becoming a monk.

During the combat training given to all 'forged by House Cannith, your warforged could have hit someone with his slam attack and been awestruck by the power his own body had. He looked for an avenue to increase that natural power, and he heard some of the humans talking about (insert monastic order of your choice here) and how they were skilled in taking down armed foes barehanded. As soon as Thronehold was signed, you HAD to find out if it was true, and if they could help you increase the abilities you were given by design....

Thats just one idea :D

Interesting idea; but I'm thinking something more along the lines of penitence for this character. Two levels of fighter to show that he was extremely skilled in warfare; and was likely the leader of his squad. He likely joined the monastic order to find solace... but I want some reason post-Last War that he might be back out... Destruction of his home, or etc...

He's trying to balance his need for revenge with the lessons he learned from the order.

Sounds like the opening of an Action Movie... I wanna be War-StevenSeagal-forged. Only less Seagal... more forged.

Well it could be as simple as this:
The monastic order he joined as penitence declared that all member must travel the world until they (insert plot here) and then return to the monastery. When they return they take their place teaching others the initial bits of monkhood (yes I know thats not a word) and then move on until they die.

I could see many things being the catalyst for return. Maybe they must travel until the defeat 100 evil foes, maybe they must commit acts of ultimate altruism, perhaps they say the WF cannot return until he feels he has atoned, maybe he cannot return until a council of elder calls him to return, and my favorite, they must travel the world for a number of years no shorter than one third of their races average lifespan... Suddenly a warforged monk of this order has some problems ever achieving a higher state of being... ;)

Why wouldn't a WarForged be made as a monk by design? Seems like a damn good way to create a powerfull assasin/infiltrator :P . Spec it light on the thinking and heavy on the pure mechanics of combat and stealth. It's path to perfection could be it trying to become the perfect killing machine ;)

During one of the many battles of the last war you were severely damaged and (maybe after spell aftershock) lost your memory, after the battle while wandering on the field unsure of what to do, you didn't ever remember for which part you were fightining you were found by some monks that recovering and soccuring the wounded of both part, they brought you back to their monastery and fixed as best as they can. You remained with them for the rest of the war helping to defend the monastery and learning their filosophy and their methods of unarmed combat. now that the war is over you want to go around,to learn all that you can about the world and about yourself. And if while doing so you can help other people so much better.

I really like this. Memory loss, and gradual regaining of it makes the WF seem all the more human; which is how I see them.
