| Soulkeeper06-01-06, 12:18 PM | Are there any particularly good resources for information on the CotSF? What I seek is more specific to their powers, and what their "flaming" weapons can do. What special abilities do folks get by being a devout member? I often hear of their powers in many of the Eberron based novels I have read and would love to incorporate some into my world. I have many of the books, but not all, and I fear what I am seeking is either spread out across many, not out yet, or in one I am missing. Any resource suggestions? |
| DragonWatcher06-01-06, 02:17 PM | I would bet that what you are looking for will likely be contained in Faiths of Eberron, which is due out later this year. In the meantime, I'm afraid that you will have to make it up. It would seem to me that flamming weapons of any kind would likely just add 1d6 to the damage... however if you want you could always say that the extra damage is sacred damage instead of fire damage. I don't know if that helps at all, but I'm sure that more questions will be answered in September when FoE comes out. |
| Soulkeeper06-01-06, 02:41 PM | Yes, that does help, on many sides. I was unaware of FoE, so that's a big plus. For now, as my group goes slow and are younger, I will allow the Paladin to join the Church as an apprentice and not yet worthy of a sword, or the higher powers the Church has to offer and see if I can buy some time. That was my thought however as you hinted, that the sword's flame (as it seemed in books) was not just fire but holy fire. I do not recall any of the books detailing any use of it as a flame source or any fear of it igniting items, even on touch. /bows |

Specifically, you seem to be discussing the spell "flamebound weapon," which deals 1d6 sacred damage to an evil creature. There are a few other nifty spells there too for Silver Flame followers. |
| stone_dog06-02-06, 07:47 PM | The Exorcist of the Silver Flame PrC also has several flaming/holy weapon abilities. Check that one out in the Corebook too. |
| PoeticJustice06-02-06, 09:43 PM | The absolute worst thing you can do in this situation is rely on a sourcebook that's months away when we've already got plenty of info. The Clerics of the Silver Flame are talented exorcisers, by way of their Exorcism domain. Their powers of inquisition are also exceptional, accomplished by the Truth Domain. The Paladins of the Flame are more deadly than other religions. Some can cloak their swords in a rightous fire when smiting evil. This is accomplished via the silver smite feat. Nearly everyone in Thrane is trained in Archery from Childhood. While this confers no additional bonus, squads of commoners raining arrows is quite common in the context of a war. Additionally, as Paladins can bless their weapons and Clerics can Align theirs, the Church has the best chance of defeating their demonic foes, as many have akward damage reduction and are too fearsome to engage in melee. |
| mhacdebhandia06-03-06, 09:58 PM | Are there any particularly good resources for information on the CotSF? The best resources would be the Eberron Campaign Setting, the Player's Guide to Eberron, and Five Nations. What I seek is more specific to their powers, and what their "flaming" weapons can do. What special abilities do folks get by being a devout member? I often hear of their powers in many of the Eberron based novels I have read and would love to incorporate some into my world. Exorcists of the Silver Flame (a prestige class described in the Eberron Campaign Setting) are clerics and paladins who serve on the front line against supernatural evil, and each carries a special weapon which is enhanced with the power of the Silver Flame itself as they advance. By the 9th level of the prestige class, as you can no doubt see, their chosen weapon is counted as magic, silver, good-aligned, and lawful-aligned, and deals fire and sacred damage in addition to normal weapon damage with each blow. This would, I imagine, be the classic "flaming weapon" that your average inhabitant of Khorvaire thinks of when they think of the champions of the Silver Flame. In Five Nations we find the silver pyromancer, an arcane spellcaster who infuses their fire spells with holy energy and even learns to cast paladin spells as arcane spells. In the Player's Guide to Eberron, there's details on the process and benefits for joining one of the three orders of the church, the knights templar of the Silver Flame. The benefits of membership are primarily support and a defined place in the world, serving the church as one of its champions fighting against evil. As a broad organisation mostly comprising martial characters such as paladins and fighters but also including characters of all classes, either exorcists of the Silver Flame or silver pyromancers would fit in well as a member of the order. I imagine that most adventurers dedicated to promoting the faith and serving the cause of the Silver Flame would seek membership, if they didn't already belong to the order of ministers (who tend to congregations of the faithful) or the order of friars (who travel as missionaries with the express purpose of proselytising the faith). |
| KhanSemus06-04-06, 12:40 AM | I go with the idea that most of the silver/sacred fire seen on blades in the novels is either the Sacred Smite feat, or a new weapon ability. Sacred Fire: weapon does +1d6 sacred damage, +1 enhancement. (vs the Holy ability, Sacred Fire doesn't bestow a negative level on evil creatures wielding, and I don't know about it counting as Good vs DR) I do not believe that the characters we've seen are level 6 exorcists, especially up to level 9. They also don't appear to be casting a spell for the fire. |
| Ruarch06-04-06, 01:27 AM | It could also be artistic lisence. After all, what is written in a novel does not have to - and often is not intended to - mirror what can happen in the actual game. This is the Drizz't trap, the defining of artistic creativity into mechancal terms and can have a detrimental effect. |
| mhacdebhandia06-05-06, 09:56 AM | Indeed. I've only read three Eberron novels, none of which included devotees of the Silver Flame as characters; I wasn't trying to account for novel characters. :) |
| ekomega06-05-06, 12:03 PM | In the Lost Mark series, there are some Silver Flame paladins, who carry swords glowing with silver fire. But they are able to turn/destroy vampires and vampire spawn with their turning ability, so I would imagine that they are pretty darn powerful and you can assume their conversion to characters makes them pretty high level. |
| mhacdebhandia06-05-06, 06:33 PM | There you go. I certainly haven't read Forbeck's novels. :) |
| Soulkeeper06-05-06, 08:58 PM | To date I have read every Eberron novel, minue two(which are on my shelf in line), and I will admit, the Paladins in the Lost Mark are one of my desires to know more. I have acquired the Five Nations today and plan to read further there. Thanks! |
