Does anyone have any ideas on what the climate of Korvaire is like. I don't recall this being addressed in any of the books I've read. If one adventures through the calendar, what do most people do during the winter? (assuming it is as frosty in Korvaire as it is up here in Saskatchewan.)

There might be a Dragonshard on it. Or check the Ask Keith FAQ.

IIRC, it goes like this:

Southern Breland is hot, humid, and tropical.

Northern Breland is warm and plainsy, say the southern Midwest USA.

Karrnath is like eastern Europe in the south, and like Russia or Scandinavia in the North.

Cyre is probably like northern Breland.

Thrane is probably like Canada at the top.

Xen'drik is like Central and South America. Aerenal probably is too.

With all the heavy rainforest portions in Darguun, Zilargo and Q'barra, I always imagined that a good chunk of the continent was tropical.

I know off the top of my head that Sharn is described as being hot and humid.

If you go to chapter 7 and the various nations, read the sections on Life and Society. You'll find some weather and climate information. It doesn't list it for every nation, but enough to deduce the type of climate and weather patterns that should exist across the continent.

I also thought this way. I know from descriptions in books that the nation of Valenar contains alot of desert and there is also a huge desert on the continent of Xen'drik. With that I figure that the equator of Eberron is crossed near Shargon's Teeth or just south of it. Note that Seren and Argonessen also have a large watch of tropical at the top of their land masses, as well as Aerenal.

Xen'drik's desert is most likely due to horrible magic, not natural geography. Considering that the map from SoX shows pretty much the entire continent as jungle except for Menechtarun and snowy near Everice, it seems that most of Xen'drik is tropical. This is also likely due to magic.

Large reptiles, i.e. dinosaurs, could not handle very cold winters or even snow. It must stay fairly warm year round in Talenta. ...perhaps... northern Mexico warm....

Dinosaurs are not reptiles, they are warm-blooded like birds.

Either way, reading the sourcebook carefully, you find that Khorvair's climate varies from sub-arctic in the far north to sub-tropical in far south.

You then get every terrain from tundra in the demon wastes and the northern islands of the Lhazar principalities, to rainforest in Q'Bara and desert in Talanta and Valenar.

Largely Khorvaire can sit rather like the continental USA.

northern thrane, Aundair and Karnath are snowbound for 6-7 months of the year.

while the south is year round.

My only alteration to this is Sharn its self, which despite sitting in a subtropical clime is actually rather cold. Why? i don't know it just always struck me as a cold city with people huddleing around small fires passing who knows what secrets rather than laid out in the heat. Gets hotter down near the lava of course. Maybe its an effect of the Manifest zone or the height.

Could it possibly be that it seems cold because it's pretty much in the shade in all but the highest levels of the city? That river running past it would cause air currents that would cool alot of the undercity as well. I see Sharn being windy, cool and wet as you get closer to the docks and the areas around the foundries in the Cogs as being unbearably hot (sorta like walking too close to an open oven, neh?). That heat rising from the Cogs is going to wreak havoc on the wind currents and with the rain almost constantly falling? Sharn may not be cool as far as the temperature goes, but rainy, dreary and cloud-covered days always feel cold, no matter what the temperature.

Picture the inside of a damp cave on a tropical island and then jam 200,000 people in it

Can anyone say "mold and mildew?" :weep: Most towers would be black!
The lower levels would be moldy & mossy with a slight overtone of human waste. :yuck: :yuck: :yuck:

With it always raining, temps in the 80s, 90s and 100s, plus the near 100% humidity... ice, fans and mint juleps would be the currency of choice. :)

Perhaps this is why the population is so low in Sharn. Who would want to live in that kind of climate?
