| Amaril05-27-07, 04:34 PM | I've noticed that as each book is released, it's becoming harder to recall and track down which books included which pieces of information about Eberron. For example, Shargon's Teeth came up in my last game session and one of my player's made a high knowledge (geography) check, but I didn't know where I could quickly pull up information specific to that area. I realized how much we need an index of all Eberron topics and sources. With that in mind, I had the idea for an Eberron index that included all topics in all Eberron sourcebooks. If we were so inclined, we could include non-Eberron sourcebooks that make references to Eberron (e.g. - Heroes of Horror, Complete Psionic, Monster Manual III, Monster Manual IV, etc.). Is anyone interested? |
| garner_adam05-27-07, 05:42 PM | I would be interested in seeing it but I don't own many supplements to Eberron. I only have access to Five Nations. |
| DBlizzard05-27-07, 06:26 PM | Wouldn't that be an ideal thing to use the Eberron Wiki (http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page) for? In an entry about a subject list the sources that mention it. |

Not really. I just need an index. A wiki requires an entry for the subject before the source reference can be placed. With an index, all you need is a listing. However, I don't think it's a bad idea to have the index on the wiki itself, but I would like to see a copy available in a columned, printable format. |
| Rechan05-27-07, 06:45 PM | It doesn't help that WotC opts to not put indexes in their books. :P |
| Amaril05-27-07, 06:48 PM | It doesn't help that WotC opts to not put indexes in their books. :P That's pretty much the direct cause of this idea. One thing that might make this effort easier is to start with the two indices we do have: ECS and PGtE. |
| davethebrave37105-27-07, 08:25 PM | I think this is a great idea, and one we could pitch to the DI once it gets active. If they can do Feat, Monster and PrC list updates with every book released, they can do this, especially if I'm paying for the DI. |

If they can do Feat, Monster and PrC list updates with every book released, they can do this, especially if I'm paying for the DI. No, I'd rather do it independently. The idea would be that the community could add to it at a constant rate rather than waiting for someone at WotC to get to it. Plus, I wouldn't want to have to pay to have access to it. |
| Amaril06-12-07, 12:01 PM | No takers, huh? |
| davethebrave37106-12-07, 12:04 PM | Honestly, I just don't have the time. I think it's a great idea...for someone else to do (ergo why I suggested as part of the DI) |
| Syltorian06-12-07, 12:17 PM | That's pretty much the direct cause of this idea. One thing that might make this effort easier is to start with the two indices we do have: ECS and PGtE. We also have a Sharn (http://www.bossythecow.com/SharnIndexIntegrated.pdf) index. I'd also like an index (including, perhaps, the online Dragonshards Dragon magazine material). I'd be willing to help out, but as I have some work on my hands, I'd have to be working on such an index very, very slowly. Guess I could start working with the Dragon Magazine stuff, as that's chunks I can more easily manage than a full book. |

| Amaril06-14-07, 10:15 PM | Well, here's an idea I have. I'm thinking we take the three indices we have and use them as a foundation. ECS and PGtE can serve as references for the first topics to cover. We could assign two or more individuals to work on each of the remaining sourcebooks so that no one individual is overworked. Each person can take a chapter and identify proper nouns or setting-specific concepts in those chapters that could/should be indexed. As far as where to create this, I think Google Docs can allow one to post a link for anyone to access and edit depending on the share settings. Each group could be responsible for a Google Doc dedicated to their respective sourcebook. [Edit: Scratch that. Community authoring with Google Docs is too cumbersome.] Any other thoughts? |
| Cifer06-15-07, 08:35 AM | I don't really see a problem with using the Wiki. It's a prebuilt structure for easy editing and other authors won't mind you already supplying them with sources for enhancing the pages. |
| Amaril06-15-07, 08:44 AM | I don't really see a problem with using the Wiki. It's a prebuilt structure for easy editing and other authors won't mind you already supplying them with sources for enhancing the pages. Personally, I hate Wikis. Most of them have poor WYSIWYG editors, and they markup they use is ambiguous and arbitrary at best. Some don't even allow you to use standard XHTML markup. Additionally, it's usually difficult to extract the content into a localized form. Google Docs could have worked for a smaller group, especially with the ability to easily publish it as a web pages and download it in multiple document formats including PDF, but it's not practical for a mass collaborative effort. Everytime someone clicks the link to open the document, their name is immediately added to the list of collaborators regardless of whether or not they actually edited the document. It could work if a small group of individuals dedicated themselves to the effort, but it was my hope to allow anyone to edit the indices. Going back to the Wiki idea, if someone else wants to set up a wiki specifically dedicated to the indices, I'm not against it, I just don't prefer it. Perhaps that Eberron Wiki mentioned about could be the appropriate venue, or even the proposed Official Eberron Wiki WotC is considering. |
| Amaril06-15-07, 08:50 AM | OK, I added an entry (http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/World_of_Eberron) in the list of sections of the Eberron Wiki. Have at it! |
| Amaril06-15-07, 10:33 AM | I sent an email to Keith asking for permission to include the Sharn Index, and Keith gave his blessing. I had also asked whether or not he knew if WotC had any indices for internal use, and he stated that WotC has no such "secret stash." |
| Syltorian06-15-07, 01:16 PM | I sent an email to Keith asking for permission to include the Sharn Index, and Keith gave his blessing. I had also asked whether or not he knew if WotC had any indices for internal use, and he stated that WotC has no such "secret stash." That's great! Thanks Amaril for organising this, and to Keith for his blessing. I've got a draft for the Dragon Magazine articles (323 and onwards). Do you want them organised by topic, as in your link, or as an alphabetic list? Anyway, here is what I got so far; tell me what you think of it. | Amaril06-15-07, 02:05 PM | Thanks, Syltorian! I set up an organizational structure that looks something like this: Subjects -Category --entry: Src#; Src#; Src#-#;... --entry: Src#; Src#; Src#-#;... -Category --entry: Src#; Src#; Src#-#;... --entry: Src#; Src#; Src#-#;... Game Mechanics -Category --entry: Src#; Src#; Src#-#;... --entry: Src#; Src#; Src#-#;... -Category --entry: Src#; Src#; Src#-#;... --entry: Src#; Src#; Src#-#;... I also added a page with the WotC product keys (http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Product_key) for reference. I had to make some up for Dragon and Dungeon Magazines, though. I haven't included a key for Dragonshards, Eberron Expanded, or any of the other web articles, although I think they certainly should be included. If you don't mind adding in your material in the appropriate sections, I'd appreciate it. |
| Syltorian06-16-07, 11:28 AM | I did some work on it today; tell me what you think of it. I've added two new categories - one for special materials (contains only Shiftsilver at the moment, but should also get byeshk etc), and one for general rules that did not seem to fit in elsewhere. I've also put titles under 'people'. I am not sure whether it belongs there, since positions and titles are not actual people, though. Please tell me what you think. |
| Amaril06-16-07, 11:37 AM | I think this is a great start! Thanks for the good work. :) I added (shifter) to the Monk entry under Substitution Levels. Regarding titles, what do you guys think about a sublist under people? I've also added a Religion section (no entries yet). Going forward, I have created a text version of the PGtE index. I hope to insert it and the Sharn index sometime this weekend. |
| Syltorian06-16-07, 11:50 AM | I added (shifter) to the Monk entry under Substitution Levels. Good job. Regarding titles, what do you guys think about a sublist under people? Seems good to me. I was also wondering whether one could not do some kind of 'dictionary', on a page seperate from the index, for the terms in the in-game languages (such as the religious titles in Aereni in the FoE). I've also added a Religion section (no entries yet). That's good too. I've moved the Cults of the Dragon Below and the Silver Flame down from Organisations, along with the Kurmaac. Going forward, I have created a text version of the PGtE index. I hope to insert it and the Sharn index sometime this weekend. Sounds great! Looking forward to this. Anyone ready to help us with the other books? Btw, as they are not official and much more time-consuming to go through for an index, should we tentatively add bits of novels? |
| Amaril06-16-07, 11:53 AM | Btw, as they are not official and much more time-consuming to go through for an index, should we tentatively add bits of novels?I'd be reluctant to do such for two reasons: The idea of the index was for game use. Novels aren't canon What do you think? |
| Syltorian06-16-07, 12:08 PM | I find it difficult to decide, to be honest. Novels are not canon, and their evens are an 'alternate world', compared to most campaigns. However, they do have some interesting and potentially useful data. Keith's descriptions of Dal Quor and Thelanis springs to mind. It happens often enough that a question on the boards here is answered by a quote from or reference to a novel. Naturally, it's easier to disagree over novels, but the books too are far from uncontested (RoE changelings, or the recent extracts from FoW about the Silver Flame). Perhaps we should consider adding a "see also: [novel]" at the end of some topics, as and when we have the time or see a need (for instance, something that is asked frequently on the boards). However, for the moment, the point is a bit accademic for me personally, as I do not have the time to re-read the novels and take index notes. I'd be happy for others to include the novels in the index, at the condition that they clearly mark them as such; i.e. that they figure at the end of the list of references, rather than hidden inside. That way people should know that the novels are different from the actual source material. |
| Amaril06-16-07, 12:20 PM | What if we make a separate index of novel-based references? I'd be worried that the novel entries would clutter up the RPG entries, which would make it more difficult to sift through what will be an already lengthy index. |
| Syltorian06-16-07, 12:35 PM | Agreed. At any rate, we should perhaps first complete the RPG entries, and then decide later on what we will do with the novels. |
| Amaril06-16-07, 12:44 PM | Agreed. At any rate, we should perhaps first complete the RPG entries, and then decide later on what we will do with the novels.Sounds like a plan. I think this is a great idea, and one we could pitch to the DI once it gets active. If they can do Feat, Monster and PrC list updates with every book released, they can do this, especially if I'm paying for the DI.I'm hoping that this will satisfy the need as an interim solution, and I'm not against donating the content to the DI once it's up and running, especially if they do include the proposed Official Eberron wiki. Yes, I would be interested and willing to contribute. I would also be willing to put it up on a website somewhere.Did you have anything you'd like to contribute? |
| Cthulhudrew06-16-07, 03:18 PM | FWIW, I started a database a few months ago incorporating Eberron information from sourcebooks and WotC's online information with a purpose like this in mind. Been a while since I worked on it, but it was mainly a source for keeping track of NPCs (names, titles, locations, and some basic game info) and settlements (villages, towns, cities, notable sites), along with the sources. I'd be happy to share what I have so far if anyone's interested. |
| Amaril06-16-07, 03:51 PM | If you don't mind including those entries and page3 references, that would be awesome. Which reminds me, I forgot I have a spreadsheet of NPCs created from DM_Jeff's list (http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=178621). I'll be sure to include those in a list of NPCs under Game Mechanics. |
| Amaril06-16-07, 09:39 PM | I'm currently in the middle of formatting the NPC list to paste it into the directory, but I have to postpone the rest of the work until tomorrow. Additionally, I'll be using my dynamic spreadsheet of the Consolidated Lists (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/lists) to import feats, PrCs, monsters, etc. Speaking of Consolidated Lists, I noticed Five Nations is not included in there. I'm going to pass an IM to WotC_Mark about that. |
| Syltorian06-17-07, 08:43 AM | I've noticed you have added the information from the consolidated lists, Amaril! Great job. This morning, I've added the Thrane section from Five Nations. I'll see when I can get around to do the other sections from that book. I have also added a 'titles' section under 'People'; feel free to change it if you don't agree with that. I have two questions, though: 1) Should we remove the Quori from the Dragon Article that were updated in Secrets of Sarlona; or should we otherwise indicate that they are different? 2) Should we be a bit more discriminating about which names to put in the People index, now we also have an NPC section? What do you reckon the difference between the two should be? |

What do you reckon the difference between the two should be? I think it's worth it to list both entries, especially for those who have the magazine but not Secrets of Sarlona. It's also nice to see other sources where additional information about an entry might be located. I know that sometimes an article in Dragon might have more fluff than what is presented in the book later. I was mulling this one over last night. I think both listings are important. The NPC entries are all statblocks, which I might relabel the section as. The People section will be where to find more information related to key characters, especially those that might be mentioned in name, but not represented in a full statblock. |
| Amaril06-17-07, 11:29 AM | Syltorian, good job on adding the subreferences to the People section. As an aside, do you plan to include the PDF supplement (http://paizo.com/dragonissues/344/DR344_Supplement.pdf) to Dragon Issue #344? One final note, should we continue discussion on the Wikia Discussion page for the Index? |
| Syltorian06-17-07, 11:58 AM | As an aside, do you plan to include the PDF supplement (http://paizo.com/dragonissues/344/DR344_Supplement.pdf) to Dragon Issue #344? I was going to, but I didn't know how to reference it... then I forgot to ask here. One final note, should we continue discussion on the Wikia Discussion page for the Index? Good idea. See you there... though we should keep some presence here as well to make sure people see it and, who knows, even contribute ;) |
| Amaril06-17-07, 04:06 PM | I was going to, but I didn't know how to reference it... then I forgot to ask here. How about DragMag (supplement (http://boards1.wizards.com/leaving.php?destination=http://paizo.com/dragonissues/344/DR344_Supplement.pdf)) 344.# Is that too clunky? We could ask Paizo if we could upload the file and link to the uploaded copy, too. In fact, I'll send them an email about that. |
| Syltorian06-17-07, 05:52 PM | It is a bit clunky, but there doesn't seem to be too much of an alternative. If we were able to upload it, that would be great too; good job in sending the email! |
| OneWinged4ngel06-17-07, 05:58 PM | Did you have anything you'd like to contribute? Sure. I could catalogue every official printed book, cross-reference everything, and all the dragonshards. I remember where most of the material is already anyways X_X. And put it up on a website... but it looks like you've got that already. Wouldn't want to go through the novels or dragon / dungeon magazines though. |
| Amaril06-18-07, 11:23 AM | Is someone willing to add in the index to the ECS? |
| Nomadicc06-18-07, 09:38 PM | Holy crap, there are a lot of Eberron feats!! :P I'd like to contribute, but not sure what's been covered already. Is there a running "to do" and "done" list? |
| Amaril06-18-07, 10:13 PM | Done: Dragon Magazine parts of Five Nations (Thrane and Aundair) small amounts of Player's Guide to Eberron feats PrCs monsters NPC stat blocks Still to do: Copy Eberron Campaign Setting index Copy Sharn: City of Towers index Races of Eberron remainder of Five Nations Explorer's Handbook Magic of Eberron remainder of Player's Guide to Eberron index Secrets of Xen'drik Faiths of Eberron Dragonmarked Secrets of Sarlona The Forge of War Dragons of Eberron Wizards.com Eberron articles (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebx/articles) I think duplicating the index in the ECS might be a good starting point to get a large chunk of the basics. It might also finish the skeletal structure for the remainder of the books. By the way, I created a Google Custom Search Engine (http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=012913407773894755951%3Ayfiplhj0p bq) for the articles on the Official Eberron Web site. It should make searching for index terms much easier. |
| Amaril06-20-07, 11:30 AM | :bump: Anyone else interested in contributing? |
| Cthulhudrew06-21-07, 11:14 AM | Sorry I've been silent for a couple of days. I thought I had the db that I was working on here at work, but apparently its at home. So I'll try and add the information that I have this weekend. At this point, it looks like the main sources have been done, so it will probably just consist of the information I've accumulated from the website (I'd gotten all the Dragonshards articles, and about halfway through the Sharn Inquisitive articles). |

Actually, we still have a lot of sources to cover. The only completed material from all of the sourcebooks is the contents of the Consolidated Lists. I'm hoping to have some time this weekend to import the entirety of the Player's Guide to Eberron and Sharn indices. |
| Amaril06-21-07, 11:22 AM | As an aside, sometimes I've considered exploring the possibility of making this an online searchable database rather than a flat file. It might be a faster process to build a form for each entry and search for information than organize it in a flat list. |
| Syltorian06-21-07, 02:08 PM | I've had a bit of a tiring couple of days, so I haven't advanced much with the lists, I am afraid. As an aside, sometimes I've considered exploring the possibility of making this an online searchable database rather than a flat file. It might be a faster process to build a form for each entry and search for information than organize it in a flat list. Would wiki still support that? How would we edit it? I am afraid that I am still pretty much computer-illiterate... I like the idea of a searchable database, but the index has also it's advantages. For instance, if someone wanted to merely check what spells or prestige classes there are, rather than look for a specific one, would the database still allow that? |

A user could create an entry or edit an existing entry. I would also generate a printer-friendly page that has everything. And yes, you would be able to generate a list of all spells. |
| Ashlock06-21-07, 04:09 PM | Personally, I'd recommend bringing up this topic over at the Worlds of Dnd boards (link in my signature). Aureon is always wanting to expand its sister site, Online-Eberron. Maybe you and he could work something out... This would be as useful to authors as players. ;) |
| Amaril06-21-07, 04:40 PM | Feel free to mention it. |
| Amaril06-22-07, 11:53 AM | I've been thinking more about the database idea rather than the flat list (still haven't decided on whether or not I will actually build it), and one thing I like about it is the possibility of associating tags with an entry. The idea behind the tags is to be able to search for a term and pull up all entries associated with that term. If I search for Silver Flame, I should be able to pull up every entry associated with that concept so long as those entries are tagged accordingly. |
| Syltorian06-22-07, 12:59 PM | If I search for Silver Flame, I should be able to pull up every entry associated with that concept so long as those entries are tagged accordingly. That sounds good. Another question, though: what if some people simply wanted to print out the complete indexes, without having to use a computer all the time (for instance, for quick reference at a gaming table)? |
| Amaril06-22-07, 01:28 PM | As I said above, I would also generate a separate, static flat list. It might or might not be categorized. Truthfully, as I'm working more and more on the flat index, I'm having a hard time with such categories, and an uncategorized index is simply to vast for quick reference. |
| Amaril07-02-07, 11:25 PM | I've been busy as of late and haven't had time to contribute additional entries to this project. Is anyone else interested in contributing. I really can't take this on by myself. |
| Syltorian07-03-07, 06:26 AM | I've been busy as of late and haven't had time to contribute additional entries to this project. Same here, I am afraid. Apart from the fact that my sleeping patterns are in a complete mess, currently. I'll get back to doing the rest of Five Nations as soon as I can, though. |
| olivista07-14-07, 06:35 AM | I have initially posted on this thread but yours is more specific http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=13068498#post13068498 I did myself a lot of work on building such an index and I would be very interested in participating on a project to extend it. I don't have much time to play neither my friends and my primary objective was to quickly locate all available information on a specific subject. My index is a text file with a | separator with several columns: Book (ECS, FN, etc) Page Column Paragraph Primary subject Secondary subject It contains about 4000 entries and keeps growing! This format allows easy conversions into whatever other format through spreadsheet software. It could be easily used to populate an online database as an example. However this work is quite tedious alone and it came to me one day that shared between a few people, it could be very quickly done and would benefit the entire community. Today, I have read campaign setting, five nations, explorer handbook, dragonmarked. We could work together on the other ones and dispatch the reading, starting with the remaining books. Interested ? -Olivista- |
| RFrenchJr07-17-07, 12:52 AM | I'd like to contribute. I will tackle Races of Eberron if that's still up for grabs though my work may come in chunks. -R |

| Amaril12-08-07, 02:08 PM | With 3.5 coming to a close, I think it'd be worth it to ramp up the work on this index. The Wiki only works if people contribute. |
| Amaril01-14-08, 03:47 PM | :bump: Seriously, should I stop bumping the thread, or is there anyone interested in this project? |
