04-12-05, 11:50 AM What does "Constitution-based Reflex save" mean?

In several monster descriptions I see this kind of reference.

Breath Weapon (Su): 30-foot cone, once every 1d4 rounds, paralyzing gas, Reflex DC 18 negates. The save DC is Constitution-based.

It seems like a contridiction. Are there wisdom based fortitude saves?

04-12-05, 11:55 AM Note it says the save DC is constitution based - i.e. the 18 is calculated using the monsters CON - usually 10+(0.5*HD)+CON modifier. The saving throw is still d20+reflex modifier

Note in this case, the creature has no CON score... 17/2 rounded down is 8

10+8 +0 (no CON modifier) = 18

Thus the DC is 18

04-12-05, 02:38 PM Oh, no, haha! It's just a misleading description if you don't know it beforehand.

It means that the Save DC for the special attack is determined by the Creature's Con modifier, ala "DC = 10 + 1/2 HD + Con Mod" or something. Doesn't mean that they use Con for their reflex saves.

04-12-05, 03:11 PM It's noted when a monster's attack has an ability-dependent save DC in case something happens which affects it's abilities.

For instance a breath-weapon user might have his consitution raised or lowered by magic or poison.

04-12-05, 03:12 PM Attacks that come from certain aspects of the creature's body (fire breathing, poison sting, etc.) have their DCs based on how tough the particular creature is (Con, which makes Con a very useful stat for monsters). Attacks that are purely magical in nature (casts __ at will, Dominating gaze, etc.) are based on the creature's force of personality (Cha, which again makes Cha a better stat for monsters).

Wow. The two blandest stats for PCs are good for monsters.

I, for one, am glad that it keeps monsters from using CHA as a dump stat (yeah, I know, monsters don't need to roll/buy stats...).
