Excerpt from an address given by Methgaf the Mendacious at the annual meeting of the Guild of Pontificators

Most scholars agree that dragonshards are somehow a part of the three Progenitor Dragons – Khyber, Eberron, and Siberys. At the same time, however, there is a great deal of disagreement (sometimes occasioning the exchange of blows, as we all recall from last year’s unfortunate incident) about just what part then may be. Are they shed scales? Solidified tears? Excreta? (Few would attest to the sanity of proponents of the latter.)

The truth is far stranger. Just as humanoid folk must contend with fleas and similar vermin, so too must the Progenitors contend with their own parasites. The nature of this parasitism is not easily encompassed by the humanoid mind, but their byproduct is the so-called dragonshards. In reality, these crystalline structures are not body parts per se, but the parasites’ means of reproduction. Call them seeds or eggs or spores, if you will. And what, you make ask, issues from these spores? Let me throw out a few names for your consideration. Fernia. Lamannia. Dal Quor. Xoriat. That’s right, the planes themselves reproduce and gestate within the flesh of the Progenitors! And have these madly circling worlds brought good to the people of Eberron? N0! They have brought nothing but suffering, madness, and decay! It must be stopped, I say! All dragonshards must be destroyed, before they can spawn more planes to bring naught but ruin! Go! Now! Destroy them all! Before it’s too late! (at this point the address becomes unintelligible as Methgaf, frothing at the mouth, is lead away by the Constabulary)
