Seeing as the last line of thought got hijacked by a group of lonely astronomers I will restart Stone_Doggs enquiry into the rings of Eberron.

Eberron has rings like(not necesarily the same as) the planet Saturn. Fact. Now, give us all an explanation of what you think they are, how they got there, what they are made up of, etc.

Below you will find my rather long reply to the original question re-posted to help you all get started on the rollercoaster ride that is the Eberron Crazy Theory!!

Ebberon is surrounded by rings made up of shed dragon scales, ectoplasm and 'pure' magic particles that shimmer like diamonds yet are completely untouchable.

These rings (yes there are multiple) circle the world at approximately 45 degrees off the equator ( like / ) in a semi-orbital atmosphere. However, the rings also rotate around Ebberon, or at least seem to as they are fixed in one orbit around the planet and therefore never actually change their position. this means that time and direction can easily be obtained by looking up at the rings and noting their position (i.e. at 6am they are in the left field but by 6pm they are over the right).

During the day the rings are visible a multicoloured band visibly stretching away from the surface of Ebberon as the inhabitants see the underside or topside of the rings, even if directly below them. Although only the first 6 are visible during the day.

The rings themselves are representative of the various 'elemental building blocks' that are found in the D&D universe, these being in order fom inner to outer:
Earth (ochre), Water (blue), Fire (red), Acid (green), Sonic (yellow), Air (white) Ectoplasm (translucent pink) Magic (fine silver/gold shimmer).

As stated earlier, the first 6 rings are comprised of scales shed from the great world wyrm after he took up refuge in his own demiplane but before he started gathering ectoplasm and magic unto himself to create the 'world' of Ebberon around himself(this was all explained in the original Crazy Eberron Theory post about the nature of the world of Eberron. If you want to find out more go look it up). The reason the scales represent all the elements is that the World Wyrm ‘Ebberon” is actually the offspring of a Bahamut and Tiamut mating (strange as that may seem) although he himself is a Crystal Dragon and neutral in respects to good/evil. It also explains why his scales fall to or rise up through the earth in the form of ‘shards’ which can be used like cognizance crystals (aka capacitors) to power much of the technology in the world and to create devastating weapons and very stout armour.

This idea is getting really long so I will sign off on it for now.

Hum,
picking up on your elemental theory
The rings themselves are representative of the various 'elemental building blocks' that are found in the D&D universe, these being in order fom inner to outer:
Earth (ochre), Water (blue), Fire (red), Acid (green), Sonic (yellow), Air (white) Ectoplasm (translucent pink) Magic (fine silver/gold shimmer).

I'll try (for the moment)
In order going out form Eberron.
Fire (red), Magic (orange), Air (Yellow), Earth (green), Water (blue), Ectoplasm/Divine Essence (Purple).
or should it go the other way?

The Acid and Sonic aren't strictly speaking 'elemental building blocks.' I know that acid has its bases in the elemental plane of earth(Look at me arguing over the science of a fictional game. I have really lost it. Guess I'm in the right place.)

My question, are the rings reachable?

My question, if they are reachable, is there anything about them that makes them a desireable location.

I wonder how they relate to the Eberron map (here) (http://www.coveworld.net/eberron/eberron-map2.jpg) ? Do they in a X pattern or a + pattern?

I know in one of the pictures I have seen there were flying castles, which makes me wonder if they are part of the rings?

I am highly skeptical of that. The rings would be high up then that or else it would be constantly plundered for its Dragon Shards. The castle are cool no the less.
By the way is there a picture of the rings I'm missing? I haven't actually seen one yet.

One quick note: according to the latest Dragon article, there is only one ring. It looks like the "rings" being plural was one of a few thing the IGN reported got wrong.

However, some of our guesses were surprisingly close. The ring is, in fact, associated with a dragon, though neither Bahamut nor Tiamat: it's associated with "the Dragon Above," Siberys.

My question, are the rings reachable?

In MY theory, the rings lie in a semi-orbital plane just below the 'Ozone Layer' of Eberron. Therefore they are visible both night and day, any falling shards will not burn up on re-entry but the rings itself is all but completely inaccessable (unless you have a warforged crewed flying ship?)

My question, if they are reachable, is there anything about them that makes them a desireable location.

As the White Sorcerer said, Dragonshards. The ring is made up of millions of dragon shards (read shed scales). Therefore if someone could reach the ring they would possess an almost limitless supply of Dragonshards and hence weild absolute power over Eberron.

By the way is there a picture of the rings I'm missing? I haven't actually seen one yet.

To my knowledge there is no picture available yet of the rings, and this thread is based purely on "Crazy Theory". We could be wrong, but we could also be right. At the very least, we have already been quite provactive with previous theories.

As for the rings here is a few more pointers/reasons to my theory:

*The rings all lie on one plane, one axis and do not spin in conjunction to the world. Hence they are fixed in place in the sky and are a useful tool for time and direction telling. They form no pattern in the sky but are a dazzeling display of colour that all have grown up with. The dwarves (forget thier new type name) are especially interested/obbessed with 'mining' the ring as it is the only place in Eberron that they currently can not extract wealth from.

*The rings are made up of every elemental/energy type that there is to represent all the building blocks of the D&D world as well as the various dragon types that exist. The World Wyrm is Polychromatic.

*The Dragonshards/ring does not possess any Divine properties whatsoever unless you are a Druid. To druids the World Wyrm is a great 'godlike' being and as such they venerate him and worhship him and the earth he created equally. This grants druids many special abilities and in turn makes them 'better' than clerics in this setting (a vast change from the D&D norm).

*Items created from or itergrated with dragon shards take on the elemental properties of the type of shard that it contains. This allows for easy made weapons of X energy type and armour of X resistance type to be made.

*Psionicaly endowed PC's are facinated with the ring and often find themselves staring at it for long periods of time. This is because the shards are not only representative of the elements they are also 'charged' with the psionic energy of the World Wyrm (he is a psion rather than a wizard/sorcerer- mind over matter and own demiplane creation sort of stuff). For this reason, psi characters can use these shards as recharging cognizance cyrstals (capacitors) and covert psi items made from these shards.

*The ring form some sort of 'containment field' for the world of Eberron as it rotates within its centre. This is how 'gravity', 'atmosphere' and 'protection from outsiders' is granted to the planet. There is no 'space' beyond Eberron, just the roiling existance of the Demiplane the world wyrm has created. Therefore there is no stars, no moon, no other planets or heavenly bodies, just the rings and thier majesty.

Well, that seems like enough for now. I'll come back later and see what else has been generated. I really hope Degana, Stone Dogg, Johnny and the Child of Winter :smirk: get in on this as I am feeling rather obtrusive and vulnerable at the moment.

Wow, the 'Dragon Above' ooooooh! I wanna know more about this one.

As for the there only being one ring, my theory does concur with this sort of as I assuem that there is a sinlge ring with clearly defined 'concentric layers' (took me a while to remember the word) with each layer representing a different energy type.

As always, thanks for the inight Johnny.

Neat theory! Based on the information in Dragon 320, though, it's composed of one type of dragonshard rather than concentric circles of different dragonshards.

...But don't let me stop your Crazy Theorizing!

I'm wondering, what exactly keeps people from just casting a fly spell and travelling there in person to collect the shards.

Well, the fly spell would probably give out long before you got up there.
Even if there is no vacuum up in the Near Heavens the air is probably really damn thin and cold.
Also it is probably the kind of hubris that the Sky Dragon might notice and smite you for if you got too close.

Then there are creatures to deal with I bet. Give them a couple dozen more generations and I bet you they will figure something out though.

I don't know, what keeps Faerûnians from just casting a fly spell and traveling to Selûne to moon the people of Toril?
