| MavrickWeirdo05-16-04, 10:55 AM | This did not get much of a response in the "origin of the mournlands" thread so I am repostiong it here. My theory Only one person knew how the forges of the warforged worked, and even they did not realize the full implications of what they made. The challenge was to make an "Automaton Warrior" which could be used on the battlefield. Magical weapons are restricted by the limitations of the weilder, and can be captured by the enemy. Golems work well when given a specific, limited task, (Guard this ring till I return for it.) but do not do well with the confusion of the battlefield. One artificer had a theory that golems cannot handle large-scale combat, because they are too orderly. Everything to them is an ally or an enamy, attack or wait, black or white. They decided to create a special forge, which would act as an energy conduit to the plane of Kythri (The Churning Chaos). The hope was that using elemental chaos energy to fuel the spell would result in an automaton capable of creative problem solving. The plan succeeded beyond expectations. As a unintentional result, the Warforged are not just smarter than golems, they are alive and have souls. The artificer made many forges, so magewrites could use them to make Warforged. The method of making the forges (and why they work) was a closely held secret. For over two decades this continued without major problem. When the forges started releasing sentient chaos energy, without a body, few actually noticed. The early discharges were weak and uncommon. With time, the frequency and the power of the energy released increased and took on specific characteristics. It came to be called Living Spells. This was occurring because The Plane of Chaos was drawing closer to Eberron. The closer it came, the more unstable were the forges. When Kythri came into coterminous position with Eberron, the forges became open gates flooding chaos into the world, until the chaos destroyed the forges. This was the creation of the Mournlands. Even if someone were to rebuild or recreate a forge, it is unlikely that the conduit would again connect to a part of Kythri which has sentient energy. If someone (who knew all the above) wanted to make more warforged their best chance would be using a "modified soul jar spell" to force a Living Spell into a Warforged body. |

Creatures made by chaos have a better chance of being lawful than creatures made by law being chaotic. Ugh, I really didn't sayt hat well . . . but I'm sure you understand my meaning. |
| jedi818705-16-04, 08:40 PM | I don't think that the the Chaos thing makes sense at all. It would take major spell casting abilities to tap into another plane, not to metion its a different style than most House Cannith members(artificers) have. If I had to guess what the reason for souls arriving in warforged, I'd say it's because of the increasing intelligence they have been given. As they became more aware the gained souls and personality. |
| MavrickWeirdo05-16-04, 10:36 PM | Well I did say it was a crazy theory! ;) I did not realize that most Warforged were lawfull. On the other hand I haven't heard any other theories which sound more likely. |
| Singing Urgosh05-17-04, 12:31 AM | Well done Mavrick, it is really good to still see people having a go at working stuff out. Personally I love your 'theory', esspecially as you have thought it out well and covered most bases, even if only in speculation. The origins of Warforged souls was the topic of one of the first great Eberron debates, but in the end there was no real consensus or even 'hint' at what was right. many beleive that thier souls just spontaneously appeared as soon as they questioned thier mortality. I reckon there is more to it than that. Like Mavrick, I also believe that there is/was some sort of generator that infused the bodies of the Warforged with some kind of primordial energy source that granted cognizance and a 'soul'. The source of this energy may well be chaotic energy bound within the solid constraints of the Warforged construct body. It could also be that the souls of dead soldiers were taken from the Grey Wastes (can't think of real name, limbo equivalent) and then reinserted into a new body (there is a spell that allows outsiders to be bound to the material plane, maybe it was like this). Or, (here is my original crazy theory) maybe the 'Dragon' Gods of the world granted Warforged sentience as a means to stop them from fighting and realise exactly what it was they were doing. Yes an intelligent construct would be great in battle, but what happens when it is granted a soul and ponders the effects and reasons for its actions? This is the difference of having a soul makes, and something I think that could possibly be in the CSB (I'd love to be right for once). Over and out.....Stay Sane |

I would think that most warforged would start out as neutrals, as they would not have had any reason (or opportunity) to make moral decisions until the war ended and they acquired their freedom. | deClench05-17-04, 07:54 PM | Yes! Bring back the good 'ol days of the chaotic, arm-waving, "kill all humans" kind of robot! Down with the lawful, predictable, "does not compute" toasters. Yeah I said it... Toasters! :twitch: Sounds good to me. |
