Cry of a Newb: Constructing an Airship? [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-15-06, 02:29 PM Hey guys, been playing for a year or so and am thinking of trying the Windwrite Captain Prestige Class. Long story short, i'd like to design a ship but not the size of airship thats presented in the books. More like an Air-yacht (about 60-100 feet long), a ship designed more for pleasure (carry about 5-10 people) than cargo or war.

So can you guys point me in the direction of suitable resources or (god bless your soul) give me some direct help i would really appriciate it. If its any help, i own the following books:
- Eberron Explorer's Handbook
- DM Guide 3.5
- Eberron Campaign Setting
- Player's Guide

As for stats, well, I don't really bother much with the stats of an airship. They don't seem all that important to me, anyways.

Eitherway, if you need a map, I did a small yacht-sized airship map in dundjinni recently.

10-15-06, 06:10 PM You may want to look at the ships in stormwrach and the arms andequiment guide.. You maybe able to combine the standard airship out of explores guide and one of the other ships to make what you want.

10-16-06, 09:55 AM I'd vote for "dont' worry about it" ... just draw the maps as you feel are appropriate ... using the existing maps for ships as given in any of the various resources or just doing a web search for sailing ships/yachts.

The only things that are really important about ships (either sea or air) are how much they can carry and how fast they can go. So long as you scale the cargo capacity to match the hull size and don't mess around with speed too much you'll be fine.

10-16-06, 09:39 PM I'd personally start with a regular ship out of Stormwrack that would meet your needs. Then make it out of soarwood, and adjust the price for elemental binding.

To run it backwards, take the cost and description of the airship in the Eberron Campaign Setting book, and find a similarlly equipped / crewed ship in Stormwrack, and find the cost difference.

10-18-06, 12:36 PM If you play DDO, or have a friend who does, see if you can get to the small island after the "Hiding in plain sight" adventure. It's got a nifty little airship that would just fit your specifications I think. I'll see if I can get some images tonight.

Hard to get some that I would like to, but I think this shows off the ship pretty well. It's name is the 'Soaring Otyugh'. Cute. And yes, for those of youwho don't play DDO, personally, I love it and that it really lets you get some 'hands on' for some of the design of Eberron. Granted, it takes place in Stormreach and Xen'drik, so a lot of it is Giant and Elvish/Drow design, but still.
