You want to pin them against the Cult of the Dragon Below based in Sharn that has a strong obsession towards the Khyber itself. The Cult - let's call them the Church of the Centre - believes that surface world is doomed to be destroyed very soon. As such, human life has no worth for them because "We're all going to die anyway, so why bother?". Only the chosen few will be saved by the Khyber itself. It's emissaries on the surface will lead believers to the Centre - the promised underground heaven shaped like a gigantic cavern similar to that from Jules Verne's novel "Yourney to the Centre of the Earth". The cult is obssesed with darkness, underground caverns, mysteries of the lost underworld of Khyber and such. What sort of monsters would you find appropriate for such a cult to worship and use? Some sort of underground critters might be in order but I want something that clearly lives under the surface, not the regular Underdark stuff like drows and svirfneblins. Presently, here are the several ones that I find appropriate: - Psurlons - from MM2 and Lords of Madness. I like the idea of gigantic underground worms that use human puppets to organise a cult to worship them. Very Lovecraftian, that one. I remember a short story by Brian Lumley about gigantic underground worms that cause earthquakes just for the kicks of it. Also, they come in three variations so I wouldn't just be same thing over and over again. - Grimlocks - Hell, I like grimlocks! They are obviously inspired by H.G. Wells' Morlocks from "Time Machine". Weird creepy race of blind underground denizens to be (ab)used as warriors and cannon fodder. But they're only CR1. - Pseudonatural Template from LoM: I like this template because it can give a nice twist to common foes, like grimlocks above. I especially like the True Strike ability. It's a sure way of causing the short - term panic among the players with their 23+ AC. :) So, any ideas? |
