Daneith Pronunciation [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-09-07, 01:45 AM How would you spell/pronounce the last name of a character belonging to house Daneith?

I ask because d'Daneith seems like it would be a bit excessive on the D's...

Or would it be a 'du' instead of just a 'd'?

05-09-07, 02:24 AM I don't think it changes, but I will admit, it sounds like you've got a stuttering problem when you say d'Deneith.

05-09-07, 03:00 AM orthographically, I would imagine that "d'Deneith" is the preferred form. As for pronuciation I usually tend to simply lengthen the initial [d] so I get something like [dː̪ɛn̪jɛθ] or [d̪ːɛɲɛθ] (DEH-nyehth). If I am speaking in my constructed Karrlakton dialect it comes out as something more like[d̪ʲːɛnʲ̪ɛθ] (DYEH-nyehth) For a native speaker of english the length distinction is going to be rather unnoticeable at first (it was difficult for me at first), but eventually I got it.

05-09-07, 07:08 AM While this has little to do with official material, in my games I use de instead of d in speach, and shorten it to d' in writing. This makes the names so much easier to pronounce, which is the way spoken language naturally goes.

BTW, I wasn't quite thinking. I actually usually pronounce it

"duh-DEE-nee-ihth", not "uhth"

05-13-07, 06:06 PM It's always interesting to see how others pronounce these fantasy names. I apparently pronounce it differently than most.

I say den-Aith. That's a "long A" sound, not an "I" sound, for the second syllable.
