| Ch@pel12-28-04, 05:09 PM | Ok, I'm running a goblinoid campaign where the PCs will be members of the Kech Volaar. I wanted to flesh out this coolest (IMO) of the Dhakaani clans for use in this campaign. So I have a STUPID amount of stats/ info worked up for them as a group. I based these numbers on chapter 5 from the DMG, the ECS, and the Dragonshards on the Heirs of Dhakaan and Demographics. I figured I went to a lot of trouble to do this, so why not share it with the board? I'm open to suggestions/ alterations, as I don't do this very often. For the most part, I stuck to the formulas laid out in Ch. 5 DMG and the Demographics DS, but in some cases I modified it a little to emphasize the flavor of the clan. I started by using the population of Volaar Draal given in the ECS, which classified it as a small city, and according to the DS this grants it a +4 community modifier. The roll twice feature for determining the highest level of any class was left out in the DS, but I put it in for some classes, to represent favored classes. Also, some classes (like monk) were converted to other classes (like fighter) for the purposes of generating numbers, to keep in line with the feel of the clan. For some of the NPC classes, I tossed in some names for high level NPCs. I was a little surprised by the high rolls for magewright; good for the clan, though. Anyway, here goes: Highest Level Formulas & Explanations: Artificer= 1d3+4 (rolled twice, represents Kech Volaar’s lean toward this class, see HoD Dragonshard article) Barbarian= 1d8*+4 (rolled twice) (mostly bugbear) (*increased per Dragonshard: Demographics) Bard= 1d6*+4 (one roll descended from Tuura, one rolled separately) (*increased from 1d4 to 1d6 to represent Kech Volaar’s lean toward this class, see ECS) (mostly female) Druid = 1d3+4 Fighter= 1d6+4 (one roll descended from Kurac, one rolled converted from monk, third roll converted from cleric and paladin) (mostly hobgoblin) Rogue= 1d6+4 (rolled twice, one roll converted from ranger) (mostly goblin) Wizard= 1d3+4 (rolled twice, one roll converted from sorceror, represents Kech Volaar lean toward this class, see HoD Dragonshard article) Adept = 3d4+4 (mostly female) Expert = 3d4+4 (rolled twice, represents Kech Volaar lean towards stonemasons and armorsmiths, see Dragonshard article) Magewright = 3d4+4 Warrior = 3d4+4 (rolled twice, one roll converted from aristocrat) Commoner= 4d4+4 Individual Class Breakdown: 1 artificer 7 1 artificer 5 2 artificer 3 2 artificer 2 8 artificer 1 1 barbarian 8 1 barbarian 5 2 barbarian 4 6 barbarian 2 12 barbarian 1 1 bard 9 Tuura Dhakaan (ECS) 2 bard 4 4 bard 2 8 bard 1 1 druid 7 2 druid 3 4 druid 1 1 fighter 9 Kurac Thaar (ECS) 1 fighter 8 1 fighter 5 6 fighter 4 72 fighter 2 130 fighter 1 1 rogue 8 1 rogue 7 2 rogue 4 2 rogue 3 4 rogue 2 4 rogue 1 1 wizard 7 1 wizard 5 2 wizard 3 2 wizard 2 8 wizard 1 1 adept 7 2 adept 3 15 adept 1 1 commoner 11 Taash Haal’dar (N female hobgoblin quartermaster) 2 commoner 5 4 commoner 2 7542 commoner 1 1 expert 10 Graal M’bar (LN male hobgoblin engineer/ stonemason) 1 expert 7 2 expert 5 2 expert 3 4 expert 2 46 expert 1 1 magewright 11 Raak Volarr (NE male goblin) 2 magewright 5 4 magewright 2 1 warrior 9 1 warrior 7 2 warrior 4 2 warrior 3 4 warrior2 433 warrior 1 Total population make-up: Artificer= 14 Barbarian= 22 Bard= 15 Druid= 7 Fighter= 211 Rogue= 14 Wizard= 14 Adept= 18 Commoner= 7549 Expert= 56 Magewright= 7 Warrior= 433 I'm also compiling a list of syllables common to the goblin language (as derived from the ECS, DS, and CoT) to randomly generate names and locations. It won't be perfect, but the names will at least SOUND official. If anyone has a nice map of an underground fortress (dwarven, maybe?), it would be very helpful to me as the first level of Volaar Draal. Comments? |

The Dhakaani are remarkably deadly and well-trained; the point is that in spite of their small numbers, they could easily present a threat to other nations if they united behind a common leader. They are the goblins that can take adventurers by surprise with their skill and efficiency. The Dhakaani should certainly have heroes who can rise in level just as the adventurers do - Tuura, Kurac, and other NPCs you come up with can advance in level over time (even if they may not ever reach epic level). The Dhakaani article notes that the typical Dhakaani soldier is a 2nd-level fighter, so I'd replace your warriors with 2nd-level fighters and then bump your fighters of 5th level and below up 2 levels apiece (so 130 3rd level fighters, etc). I'd see a similar shift in other classes; the Kech Volaar should definitely have more than one 5th-level wizard, and as wordbearers, they have more bards than the other clans. In general, I'd raise character levels by a level or two and shift some of the commoner population to low-level PC classes; there should be a fair number of 2nd-level level characters around (though as bugbears have humanoid levels, 1st-level babarians are fine). I'd also be inclined to shift the druids to bards, as druidism is an orcish tradition. I'd also probably shift a little of the commoner population over to experts. Again, the Dhakaani are a society of remarkable individuals, heirs to ancient knowledge and fueled by burning devotion to the dream of the empire. The Ghaal'dar will have more in common with traditional human demographics - but the Dhakaani are an unusally gifted people. |
| Ch@pel12-29-04, 12:31 PM | I heart the hell out of you Keith. Seriously, thanks for looking it over. When I set this up, I figured it wasn't entirely accurate. I used the demographic info as if Volaar Draal was a typical settlement. I knew it wasn't, but I wasn't sure how it should look. But I just KNEW that if I built it, you would come. ;) Okay, so I made most of the changes you called for. I started out by getting the percentage of commoners out of the population. On the first set it was something like 90%. In order to emphasize the exceptional nature of the culture I scaled the "commoness" down to 35%, and divided the surplus of people to fill out the other ranks. I broke it down into percentages and gave the most to expert, then fighter, then bard, then barbarian, then wizard, and so forth. I put the entire amount into the lowest level, then worked up the levels to create a heirarchy. In the case of fighter and bard, I left the two central NPCs as the highest in their class; I get the feeling goblinoids don't like threats to their power. For PC classes, fighter is dominant, followed by barbarian (because the DS on demographics says there's a high concentration of them in Darguun), then followed immediately by bard. Is this enough bards and wizards for the Word Bearers? Anyway, so what do you think of these numbers?: Individual Class Breakdown: 14 artificer 6 25 artificer 4 42 artificer 2 5 barbarian 8 35 barbarian 6 65 barbarian 5 100 barbarian 3 160 barbarian 2 1 bard 9 Tuura Dhakaan (dirge singer, ECS) 52 bard 8 105 bard 5 200 bard 3 1 fighter 9 Llesh Kurac Thaar (warlord, ECS) 20 fighter 8 143 fighter 7 220 fighter 6 460 fighter 4 1597 fighter 2 5 rogue 8 18 rogue 7 20 rogue 5 30 rogue 4 44 rogue 3 70 rogue 2 15 wizard 7 20 wizard 5 25 wizard 3 75 wizard 2 ----------- 21 adept 8 37 adept 5 90 adept 3 81 commoner 11 102 commoner 7 548 commoner 4 2344 commoner 2 105 expert 10 415 expert 8 812 expert 6 1500 expert 4 13 magewright 11 25 magewright 5 50 magewright 2 Total population make-up: Artificer= 81 Barbarian= 365 Bard= 358 Fighter= 2441 Rogue= 187 Wizard= 135 Adept= 148 Commoner= 3075 Expert= 1482 Magewright= 88 |
| Hellcow12-29-04, 01:26 PM | This seems reasonable. While I think this is fine as it is, with the Kech Volaar in particular I don't think that it is required that Kurac Thaar be the highest-level fighter; he may simply be the smartest and best strategist. They are civilized enough that might doesn't always make right. What I would say is that Tuura and Thaar are probably the "PCs" of their class category; I'd give them action points and have them advance in level as the PCs do. Even if Tuura wasn't the highest level bard (though I think it's fine that she is), it's clear to everyone that she is the greatest bard of the age - and that she has only just begun to grasp her true potential. I'd extend this to other champions you develop - there can certainly be a small group of Kech Volaar who can exceed these levels as they adventure and encounter the PCs. They may not become epic level, but the recurring bugbear barbarian could become a valued ally or a terrifying enemy. |
| Ch@pel12-29-04, 01:40 PM | Okay that makes sense. I'll make sure they (Tuura & Kurac) have all the PC perks. I'm going to redistribute the fighter class like so: 15 fighter 12 36 fighter 10 60 fighter 9 Llesh Kurac Thaar (warlord, ECS) 163 fighter 7 360 fighter 6 610 fighter 4 1197 fighter 2 Hows that look? |

Looks decent. Again, the point is that the clans could pose a serious threat if they got together - so while I wouldn't put anyone over 12th level unless you were making them one of the champions of the age, it makes sense to me that they've got people who can match the best Breland has to offer. |
| Ch@pel12-29-04, 02:58 PM | Yeah, I hear what you're saying. I figure most of the higher level people would probably aging anyway and they'd be more into the planning and strategizing rather than running around in a horde with the grunts. Whats the average goblin life expectancy like? (you know, barring any... accidents) BTW- this might be a little off topic, but hey its my thread, I'll ask if I want. I'm planning on using bugbear as a PC class, but I'm a little befuddled by the racial package. Say I had a bugbear with one level of barbarian. Would that make him a 5 HD (or is that expressed as ECL 5th?) creature? (3 humanoids levels, +1 LA, and barb 1) Or does the LA cover the whole starting package? The whole thing looks way overpowered unless I'm missing something. All those stat bumps AND +3 natural armor? Smells fishy... |
| Bluebrush12-29-04, 03:11 PM | I think the deal is your Effective Character Level is your Class Levels + Racial Hit Dice + Level Adustment. So, going by what you've put (I have no idea if it's actually the case) a bugbear gets 3 HD from being a bugbear and one from being a barbarian for a total of 4HD but is treated as a Level 5 character with regard to XP due to Level Adjustment for bugbear perks. Though I'm not too clear on this myself |
| Ch@pel12-29-04, 03:29 PM | I just searched and found a discussion of bugbears on the Race boards. Evidently, in the example I provided, I was right. The ECL of the bugbear would be 5, after taking only one class level. This doesn't sit well with me, so I tweaked the PC version of the race like so: EBERRON BUGBEAR: — +4 Strength, +2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, –2 Intelligence, –2 Charisma —Medium size. —A bugbear’s base land speed is 30 feet. —Darkvision out to 60 feet. — +3 natural armor bonus. —Automatic Languages: Common, Goblin. Bonus Languages: Draconic, Elven, Giant, Gnoll, Orc. —Favored Class: Barbarian. —Level adjustment +1 I dropped his +4 to move silently, and gave him a penalty to INT. Otherwise he would have been too tempting to spellcasters for his +3 natural armor. I think this makes him nice and playable. Of course this meant, I had to fiddle with the other goblinoids, too: EBERRON GOBLIN: — –2 Strength, +2 Dexterity, –2 Charisma. —Small size: +1 bonus to Armor Class, +1 bonus on attack rolls, +4 bonus on Hide checks, –4 penalty on grapple checks, lifting and carrying limits 3/4 those of Medium characters. —A goblin's base land speed is 40 feet. —Darkvision out to 60 feet. — +4 racial bonus on Move Silently and Ride checks. —Automatic Languages: Common, Goblin. Bonus Languages: Draconic, Elven, Giant, Gnoll, Orc. —Favored Class: Rogue I gave the goblin a base speed of 40 ft. Otherwise, there wasn't too much reason to play a goblin over a hobgoblin, since the goblin has those stat penalties. EBERRON HOBGOBLIN: — +2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution. —A hobgoblin's base land speed is 30 feet. —Darkvision out to 60 feet. — +4 racial bonus on Move Silently checks. —Automatic Languages: Common, Goblin. Bonus Languages: Draconic, Dwarven, Infernal, Giant, Orc. —Favored Class: Fighter. —Level adjustment +1 (can only take 5 class levels at creation) What do you think of these? |
