| reveal12-30-04, 04:20 PM | There are many warforged who feel strongly that the Lord of Blades is right, warforged should rise up, yadda yadda yadda. On the other hand, there are many warforged who adventure with "fleshies," meaningfully contribute to society, work in shops throughout Khorvaire, yadda yadda yadda. In certain real world cultures, people who feel that people of their own race/religion/gender have "sold out" if they do certain things and don't "keep it real" for lack of a better term call others nasty names like "Uncle Tom" or something like that. Which got me thinking; what would a warforged who believed in the LoB call a warforged who did not? One term I've come up with is "House 'forged" like the term given to slaves in the US who worked in the house as opposed to the fields. Anyone else? Please keep it clean and civil. |
| Ricohard_Draconis12-30-04, 04:30 PM | lifers - as in working with those who have life rather than constructs |
| motorfirebox12-30-04, 04:49 PM | you could call 'em sharnballs [insert better name here], after the delicious snack that's sold on every corner of the city of towers. the outside of a sharnball made of crispy, sweet waffle; the inside is chewy birchroot taffee. like sharnballs, warforged that work with fleshies are crunchy on the outside and chewy in the middle. |
| therazoreater12-30-04, 04:59 PM | Toy Soldiers |
| Edymnion12-30-04, 05:24 PM | Well, there's always the obvious ones: Metal Man Tin Can Tin Man Three-Wheel (referance to the three wheeled wagon crack in the ECS) Suits (referance to them being nothing more than walking suits of armor) Slag |
| Romulus LoneWolf12-30-04, 05:28 PM | How about "Owned"? edit: Alternatively, there's always "Flesh-Lover", or "Beast of Burden". |
| Streamweaver12-30-04, 05:28 PM | Rust bait, Bucket Head, Golum Boy, Scrap heap, Clockwork, Plate Baby, Woody, Paper Weight, Cog Monkey, Gear Zombie, Bullet Head... The list could go on and on. |

| Lurkalot12-30-04, 07:25 PM | Which got me thinking; what would a warforged who believed in the LoB call a warforged who did not? One term I've come up with is "House 'forged" like the term given to slaves in the US who worked in the house as opposed to the fields. Anyone else? Going back to the original question of what insults Warforged would use for each other (i.e. probably not "tin-man"), you could go back to basics and just use terms like Menials, Servants, Drudges. Said with enough venom, you could see this being a nasty little term of abuse for a Warforged that still had a subordinate role to a fleshy master. How about "Throwback" or "Regressive." That might work for emancipated warforged who hate the serving ones that they think enjoy clinging to their old roles as bodyguards / whatevers. Then you can start doing compounds and evolving your own words. I like the image of a warforged muttering "Yesser" to a passing warforged bodyguard in an undertone just calculated to offend. Naturally, the term derives from "Yes Sir," the supposed words that the employed warforged is always saying as he bows and scrapes to his fleshly lord. Or blunt and imagery rich (but more humanistic) terms such as "Chain-boys," "Dependants," and "Quarrel Catchers." The last being a reference to the Warforged troops always being sent into dangerous battles in preference to the "living" troops, the idea being that these slave-forged (there's a good one) are still being used by their masters. Just a few more for the mix. |
| Romulus LoneWolf12-30-04, 09:13 PM | If we're going for a catch-all "N-Word" type insult, there's always my favorite robot insult from Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future: "Clickers" ;) |
| Hand of Evil12-31-04, 10:38 AM | tool - contruction - **** bucket |
| Just another user12-31-04, 04:28 PM | puppet (in the sense that, they put a hand up your ...., and you do what they want) Ok, maybe is a little too subtle :P And yes, I know warforged don't have an .... (or at least, I think they don't) |
| Dracoulis The Phyrexian12-31-04, 06:25 PM | Property. Tool. It. Anything which drives home the fact that they are not alive, are not people, and thus deserve no more respect than your wagon, your chair, your farming tool. |
| Lurkalot01-01-05, 05:06 PM | The most blindingly obvious and fitting insult that a "free" warforged would use for a "slave" or indentured one is surely just this: Golem |
| RatFlail OF DOOM!!!!01-01-05, 05:12 PM | Sam: we shouldnt trust him Mr.Frodo he tried to feed us to shegloth Frodo: Non sense sam look at him hes happy he laughing Gollum: Mwehehehehehehehehehhehehehehheheeh KILLS ZE HOBBBITS mwehehehehehehehehehheheheh Sam: I love u MR.Frodo Frodo: not now sam... |
| AvonRekaes01-01-05, 09:13 PM | I had a little idea in my head that as the years passed on Khorvair, a good insult for warforged might actually be "warforged". "Yeah, we were forged for war, that isn't who we are. I don't go around calling you organics "fornication-concieved" now do I?" |
| Euangelion01-01-05, 09:26 PM | city goblin (used by LoB warforged for the "sell-outs") forgie (used by non-warforged) hammeredhead (non) rusty (either) sapblood (non) Edit: pawn, or whatever word is used for the piece in the Eberron equivalent of chess (LoB) |
| Korhal IV01-01-05, 10:50 PM | The most blindingly obvious and fitting insult that a "free" warforged would use for a "slave" or indentured one is surely just this: Golem That's a very good one, actually. Alas, none of my PCs want to play a warforged, so I can't toss this at them. :( |
| Lurkalot01-02-05, 11:34 AM | That's a very good one, actually. Alas, none of my PCs want to play a warforged, so I can't toss this at them. :( No problem: Angry mob of warforged charging down street one way, shouting 'golems.' Warforged at other end of street yelling traitor, oath-breaker, ingrates, etc. PCs in middle of street going 'uh oh!' Ahhh, politics. ;) Or a more plausible version: have the PCs working with a group of Warforged who are indentured to the same patron that has hired them, or similar - i.e. PC's have been provided with extra muscle, an associated military group or something. PCs love that. Have them hire a couple of extra Warforged (who may well approach the PCs when word gets around) just to boost numbers. These extra few might be available to hire, or they may even seek the PCs and offer their services. Give them a very believable reason to do so, make them offer good rates if you think the PCs will fall for it, or offer the PCs a budget to hire extra muscle - PCs really love that. But make sure they have a good reason to hire warforged, e.g. a mission against poison using enemies, forced marches, or something. These 'free' warforged will be busy stirring up rebellion amongst theirs however. Make sure you have a few good arguments /speeches prepared for them, for when the PCs cotton on, along the lines of "We have a right to be free." The best would be a mission into the Mournlands. If you don't think it through, it makes perfect sense to hire Warforged. But imagine the transformation from the power-spolit PCs glowing at heading up this military unit of fifteen-sixteen warforged (each min Warrior-3) to the growing unease as they suspect rebellion. Have a warforged desert. Have warforged change places. Are these exactly the same troops you had yesterday, or has another taken the place of one of them. Nothing will drive the point home better than the confusion over which warforged is which. Doubt, isolation, inhumanity of those around them. Go Ravenloft on them. Maybe one of the warfoged, the most loyal to them or their patron will be found smashed in the morning with the word 'Golem' carved into his head. And none of the Warforged will discuss it with the PCs. They just look at them with those cold stone eyes. :evillaugh :evillaugh :evillaugh |
| Gez01-02-05, 03:21 PM | In the chat log, Keith Baker referred to partisans of the Lord of Blades as "LoBsters", and I think it would make a nice derogatory term for them. Other than "tool", I like "scrap-for-brain". |
| Takasi01-03-05, 01:33 AM | The most blindingly obvious and fitting insult that a "free" warforged would use for a "slave" or indentured one is surely just this: Golem This is what I was thinking. You could also use: Construct! Homunculus! Automaton! Puppet! Drudge! Marionette! Mannequin! Effigy! Basically, anything that denotes a creation to be controlled. |
| Phasma Felis01-03-05, 05:40 PM | A lot of people seem to have missed that this is about insults 'forged use for each other, not ones that fleshies use for warforged. "Flesh-lover", "throwback", and "puppet" are all great. I really like the backstory on "sharnball". "Golem" makes sense, but I'm iffy about it: the LoBsters want to escape the implication of servitude, but at the same time they emphasize their construct nature over their living aspects. They might see "golem" as something to aspire to. I could see a less genocidal 'forged who still values his freedom using this for servant 'forged, though. This goes the other way, too. My warforged character had a personal beef with the Lord of Blades (he was part of a Cyran unit that was outside Cyre for the Mourning, and when they returned to hunt for survivors, the Lord of Blades slaughtered his human companions), and called his minions "bladelings" with a derisive sneer, usually just before challenging them to single combat. |
| Freakazoid!01-04-05, 11:44 AM | Since they were House Cannith creations...maybe "Canner" or "can" (like tin can...) |
| RadicalTaoist01-05-05, 12:53 AM | Ultimate Warforged dis: "Oh shut up, you're obsolete." :OMG!: k, seriously I was thinking they might go for more feeble sounding object names. Like 'scarecrow' and 'doll'. |
| WizO_Sith01-05-05, 10:44 AM | Not to throw a monkey wrench into things, but I'm not sure that agents of the Lord of Blades *WOULD* use derogatory terms to refer to warforged that aren't affiliated with the LoB. The LoB is something of a messianic figure amoung the Warforged, and one that's trying to recruit all the other warforged under his banner (in fact, he may see all Warforged as ALREADY being affiliated with him - some of them just don't realize it yet). One thing about fanatics is that they tend to think that they know what's best for everybody else (and co-incedentally enough, what's best for them is always the same thing - joining *The Cause*). Most fanatics, when encountering potential converts that *DON'T* subscribe to their POV, tend to believe that the potential convert just hasn't had things explained to them correctly or that the unbeliever will eventually "Come Around" and see "The Truth". It's very easy to see the LoB laying down an edict that non-aligned Warforged are to be treated with the utmost respect/kindness/mercy and even those Warforged actively opposing the LoB's aggenda will probably be given multiple opportunities to surrender/retreat and every effort made not to kill/injure these "poor, misguided, souls" unless unavoidable (of course, the definition of "unavoidable" can get kinda blurry in the heat of battle). YMMV, of course. (By the way, this a great thread) |
| Takasi01-05-05, 12:24 PM | In the Forgotten Forge, when Cutter goes into rage she charges the nearest "flesh-loving traitor": any warforged party members. If there were an edict, then I would assume that she would have targeted the warforged last. There are various ways of interpreting the mind of the Lord of the Blades. IMO, the "conversion" process is only a temporary fix. His long term goal is mass production of newer, better warforged. He may send agents who are specially trained to convert, but the majority of his army probably have very poor social skills in diplomacy. In Cutter's case, he has a goal to accomplish and if another warforged works with non-warforged to stop him then he's going to want to curse them. I would also guess that many of these curse words would come from sermons of the Lord of Blades. Part of keeping fanatics is using derogatory terms for non-fanatics. |
