Describing a tavern in the Cogs? [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-19-05, 02:20 PM In the district of Khyber's Gate (Upper Cogs) there is a tavern called Shamukaar. It is a safehouse for members of Daask. I was wondering what such a place might look like (outside and inside), I was planning on using this location in the next adventure that I run. The Sharn book doesn't give any decription for it besides that it is a slaughterhouse, butcher, restaurant, and tavern.

I would imagine it lies within a natural cavern, probably fairly sprawling, high ceiling...I want to really give my players a feel for what this place looks like. Running an Eberron campaign, I am finding my greatest challenge is trying to give good solid descriptions of some of the more fantastic areas with in Sharn.

I wish the book had more pictures of the locations with in the city. It is hard for me to describe something well that I haven't seen with my eyes and I'm finding much of the descriptions in the book lacking in detail. Maybe I'm just unimaginative but I could really use some feedback on this. I want the encounter to be a memorable one. I have already got a rogue's gallery, worthy of the Mos Eisely Cantina, to put in it...now I just need a good idea of what the place looks like. ;)

02-20-05, 08:51 AM To best describe the vista, I would suggest the following steps.

Step 1) Go to the nearest City's Inudstrial Disctrict.
Step 2) Look for the nastiest, most run down bar you can find.
Step 3) Take notes.
Step 4) Profit.

Anyway, the idea is that the place is probably grimey, nasty, covered in soot and other such stuff on the outside. On the inside, it is pretty much the same, but with tables. Low levels of light, crude furnishings due to the poverty level, and of course; the smell of smoke, sweat, and animal blood has to fill the place. Also, due to the uncomfortable heat, all the smells are multiplied and made much worse in every way.

Well you could just say "Wretched hive of scum and villany" and leave it at that, oh and you have to have band music way to cheery sounding for the rest of the surroundings.
