So for those of you that don't know desolate is in the demon wastes and many nations try and put their problem people there and every time people are sent there they disappear in the night things intact and no sign of a fight. What could do this? I sent some players there and now I need to make something for them to investigate. Could it be invisible stalkers? Or magic sending them away? Does anyone have any ideas for what to do or what you have done in the past?

Thanks, me so sleepy.

i would somehow attach this to the daelkyr. the reason people are vanishing is because there being kiddnaped and used for twisted experiments.

I've three hypothesis:
1)The Lair of The Keeper, though roughly 350 miles away, send outs servants to gather souls for the Kyber Shards. The Serveants could be derange Dragon Below cultist or something more sinister, like a special type of devourer or Nightshade. Considering the lack of population in the Waste, even a small town like Desolate would attract baddies from all over the Waste for various reasons.

2) I believe in he "Ask Kieth Baker" thread, Baker mentioned that the seas surrounding the Wastes are "very intresting" and hold intresting creatures. Maybe a tribe of fiendish Sahuagin raided the previous settlements, though the lack of evident carnage would go against their typical style. Or perhaps a particularly cunning aboleth or kraken resides off the coast of Desolate.

3) Maybe the Lords of Dust have a hidden stronghold nearby, and are using the residents as dust stuffed creatures or for fiendish experiments. They know that if they leave the town itself untouched and leave no evidence, the mystery of the missing settlers will draw in even more souls to Desolate. They'll let a small adventure group go through untouched to make it seem "safe", but when a larger population moves through they make their move.

Yeah the biggest problem I am having is the "what is taking them but disturbing nothing else?" one. Maybe, like you said a kraken or an abolith with an eldritch machine that charms or teleports them away. But then the PCs would stay there the night (staying up to see what happens) and they get charmed or whatever and go to the sea or where ever. I was thinking, and this idea is getting more and more acceptable in my mind, fiendish (or normal) invisible stalkers. Think about it, send 20 of them in and they can gang up on the 40 guards out then just do 800 coup de grace in one night. The group could fight a few (being 8th level) and then run for it (they tend to be more on the "lets live and screw them" side). But then the question is why? And to this I have no answer yet. I don't want it in my game if there is no reason for it even if the PCs don't find out.

Thanks
