| LuciafSlayer06-09-04, 12:02 PM | I have been eagerly anticipating the release of Eberron for a long while. Now as it grows near I am getting a story together so it won't be long before I can run it for my group. But the pieces aren't fitting together. Perhaps you people can help. I want it to begin with a battle scene. The PCs belong to one of the kingdoms. They are on the battlefield standing across from the enemy army. I plan on building the tension with in depth description of the sights and sounds around them, including the smell of feces and the crows flying over head. Any way their captain gives them a speech, as the other captains are talking to their brigades. Finally the battle begins, and it's all hell. I mean to keep the actual battle very chaotic, and semi short. When the smoke clears, depending on what condition the pcs are in, I'm sure they will be alive, they will be facing commoners mostly, they and their captain will be the only ones who survived in their brigade. Flashforward two years later, after the war is over, and the pcs are all down on their luck. They don't have much money, or posessions. They live in sharm, in the slums. It is a holiday, and they are all going to meet with their ex captain, whom is doing a little better financially, but not much. So the pcs all get time to do stuff around the city before their get together. Finally at night they end up at a bar, the former captain buying them drinks and all of them catching up on old times. This will give the players a lot of roleplaying time, and a chance to reveal a lot about their characters. After a while the captain's sister busts into the bar, and calls him away. Some shady characters enter, giving the pcs chances to make checks and figure out something is about to go down. The shady characters attack the ex captain, and the bar errupts into pandomonium. During the fight the ex captain is slain, and the remaining shady characters take off running. I assume that some of the pcs will give chase while others check on their fallen comrade. But I am banking that they will speak with the sister, who will be very upset about her brother. She will tell the pcs she has to leave before the guard arrive, because she is being sought for the murder of another. She will plead with the pcs to take her some where safe where she can explain what is going on. Now here's where it gets hazy, I generally have the pieces, but I am having trouble fitting them together, a little, or a lot of help will be appreciated. She is like an archeologist, well an apprentice anyways. A few months before the bar fight, her professor and her were hired by a wealthy collector to find any information on an artifact. Well after much research and some string pulling the professor and his aprentice discovered the location of the artifact. With intentions on leaving to visit the wealthy man the following day, the girl left the "office" for the night to go home and rest. She was awoke by knocking and a letter telling her the professor is dead, she is the suspect, and to flee immediately. She hears commotion outside her window, and sees it's the guards, so she flees. Surely enough, the guards are swarming all over the office, and onlookers tell her vandals ransacked the place, and there was a murder. 1) Here's the stuff that doesn't fit to well. The wealthy man who hired her is a Rakshaha in disguise. He is looking for an artifact created by the Coautl centuries ago, and provides the wielder to see the Rakshasha in their true forms at all times. It turns out that the church was starting to research the artifact, and the Rakshaha found out, so had the notes the church collected stolen, those who were researching it killed, and delivered all the notes along with his request to this professor and aprentice. But some one else knows about this artifact, and wants it, so they went to the "office" once they found out that the professor his pupil found it, and tried to get the information, but he wouldn't talk, and all the notes were hidden. Perhaps he found out that this was a dangerous situation, and did away with the notes. Whew this is getting long, so I will stop, and post a reply to continue. |
| LuciafSlayer06-09-04, 12:17 PM | Alright, so the pcs hear this girls story, and she asks them to take her to meet with this wealthy man, who is in another city. Suggestions? I am assuming that they will, but they are going to have to be careful, and quick. As the guard is looking for them, and they don't want to get this girl caught, or atleast I hope they don't. 2) Why don't these shady characters strike again, or are they waiting for something. Obviously they are the ones who killed the professor. I thought that maybe they could be assasins hired by a high ranking member of the church who wants to find this artifact for his own benefit. So the pcs set out, and finally arrive at this other city were the "wealthy man" said he lives. They finally go to visit him, and they meet his two heavies, whom I have put a lot of time into making. These two are bad muthas. But they aren't that important right now. So the pcs meet with this wealthy man, and he tells them that he is a collector, and has heard many rumors about this artifact, rumors which he will lie about, keeping any connections to Rakshashas and Coautls exempt. He offers to equip the party, and fund their excursion into X'endrik, where this artifact is supposedly located. He even offers them rooms for the night. 3)This one I think I have figured out. The reason he doesn't attack the party, and force the girl to take him with instead, is because the Coautl put an enchantment on the temple that houses this artifact, which prohibits Rak.....those guys frome entering. So he needs them to go and do it. Does this work? The pcs will set out, and have some low level adventures on the way. I figured they will go from level one to level three or so by the time they reach this temple. There they will battle zealot lizard folk, and have to solve some puzzles inside the temple. But ultimately, hopefully they will succeed. 4) At what point does the Rak.... send his two heavies to get this artifact? Because now they will be able to see through his disguise. 5) And how does the mysterious third party (the shady characters boss) fit into the story from here on out. I must say, typing all of this has really got the pieces fitting better, I thought there were more holes then this, but it's coming to me. But any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. So thank you in advance. |
| Brastan06-09-04, 04:26 PM | Wow... Thats more work then I've done on mine. I've just been setting up a town with some interesting NPCs and will let the Players wander around for a while. I was looking at using Q'barra as the region to start with. I have some stuff that works well with lizard folk. To your stuff. If your PC's fallow that plan you have set I will be impressed. I group literly have to be lead by the nose on most adventure storylines. And they usually don't like it. The Link: Okay so you have a Rakshashas/Wealthy collector, the Church of Silver Flame, and some unknow player. My first thought was that the Rakshashas was doing another clean up job. His spies watching the poor professor, I have family ties to scholarly types, and they report that he's found the artifcat. The Rakshashas, wanting to keep the Church confused and ignorant of the same knowledge attemps to kill the reaserschers. This is a simple fix and removes a third party. You may not want that. This could get really nasty and may endup pitting the Church against the Pcs at some point. Especially if the Rakshashas convinces them that the "Church" is really the bad guys. This could be done two ways 1. The Rakshashas could convince the Pcs that, 1. The "Church" members they run across are impostors. Sending his own henchmen as real impostors the frist time and betting the crud out of Pcs. (This would be more likely to work I think) 2. They run across really Church members out hunting for there lost notes, and to the PCs bad luck they now have them. (Question, do your players have conspertiors mind? Do they see treachery and betrayal in every encounter? I ask because thats what I have to deal with, I just want to know if this is a snag for others.) If I've learned anything from reading DungeonCraft articles its this, Never make more then you need, and Always have a plan B if not and additional C or D. I hope this helps. Hopefully others will comment. And definitely good luck, you are more ambitious then I. |
| dxyn06-09-04, 05:20 PM | Ok, for your "shady characters" and the power behind them, use yet another organization, maybe one of the druidic orders from the eldeen reaches (the lords of dust (rakshasas) are located in the demon wastes and the druids nearby must keep an eye on them). Then you'd actually have the PCs working for the sole "bad guy' and both the druids and the church of the silver flame against them. Secondly, for your initial start have the PCs part of the army of Breland. It makes sense if you want the ex-captain to be in Sharn (which is in Breland) and it is also the gateway to Xen'drik (as noted in the most recent Gearing Up article). I think the idea that the Rakshasa (or his henchmen) try to take the arifact away prior to the PCs returning it is a good one. They will then have the chance to realize who the real bad guy is and make up for what they have done. Sounds like a great campaign. dxyn |
| Azzadar06-10-04, 03:41 AM | This sounds awsome. I hope you don't mind if I borrow it? I think you should have the goons ambush the PC's outside of the temple/dungeon. Now the PC's have a reason to continue the adventure which can branch off in many directions. Will the third party use the PC's the recover the artifact? What will happen when the authorities catch up to the archeologist? Good stuff man. |
| LuciafSlayer06-10-04, 08:41 AM | Brastan, dxyn, azzadar, thank you very much. You have given me stuff to work with, and further ponder. OFcourse I don't mind if you use this scenario, I wish you the best of luck with it. From reading these comments, I think I will have the PC's begin as a part of Breland's military. I like the idea of the druids, but I will need to wait for the book to get more ideas on them. Otherwise I was thinking of having the shady characters belong to an assasins guild hired by a high ranking official of the church of the silver flame. He probably didn't want too many people in the church knowing about his research, so he had to hire some outside help. So he will probably show up later in the story, and claim to be a friend wanting to help, possibly telling the pcs the true value of the artifact, and trying to convince them to hand it over. But once again, the Druid thing would add even more "noir" to this story. And if the pcs kill that member of the church, then that could pit them against the church's wrath. My players, like most I'm sure, manage to surprise me. I think, there is no way they will do anything but this. Yet they manage to do something else, and then my story really takes a turn. But for the most part, I think I can get them to go along with most of it. And if they decide to turn the girl over to the authorities after the bar fight, I have a solution for that to. That guy from the church questions the girl, and forces her to take him to the temple, along with a convoy of guards ofcourse. But then the mysterious person who slid the paper underneath her door, goes to the pcs and tells them she is in trouble. Then it can turn into a rescue mission. So we shall see. Once again, thank you everyone. What a wonderful setting this is. To my dismay, my ignorance has gotten the better of me. I did not mean X'andrik (spelling) but I meant to send the pcs to Q'barra (Spelling). |
| Azzadar06-10-04, 01:01 PM | It's nice to see you have a backup plan in case the PC's through a monkey wrentch in your plans. Good luck. |
| Saurenda06-10-04, 02:09 PM | Getting past the beginning, as I don't quite agree(but thats not the point) with having everyone already met and on a group and then a certain amount of time passing, as it seems there was a lot of good roleplaying that was left out for sake of plot which means nothing to players anyway; Lets get down to basics. The item in questions allows people to see Raks in in aform as they are all the time, thus the item has true seeing on it and thus it is an item of considerable power for this world, being level 6 or so magic. Now the pcs being intelligent as they are even without meta gaming will conjecture: "Hey people are egging us on to get item A, when person A would benefit the most from having it. Thus item A is also sought after person B who would be hurt the most by having the item revealed. Therefore using simple logic, person A must very well in fact be person B, and seek item A." For that matter how is personal interaction in your games? From the sound of things it seems like a movie of the pulp noir kind, yet have you thought about the way they will react to acusations about each other. What if the Rak convinces them someone in the party is a Rak? Easily done: Still illusion. the subject denies everything yet while visible in the item B, they are seen as a Rak. This item can be caster level 3 relatively easy to make. thus you desginate on target secretly or appoint a certain race to all seem Rak in the item B's view. Thus house Cannith begins killing off large numbers of other houses who they assume are Raks in disguise and total war brakes out. Who listens to Raks pleeding for mercy anyway? And no one can truly know without true sight until it is too late. no one is going to throw holy cross bow bolts into a person to check. Clerics who are good are too stupid to realize searing light does not damage good characters, and half to nuetral. People who die do not revert to Raks? Easily fixed. Equip your Rak with still ilussion again. Dead bodies don't talk =D Got someone with that nifty spell that gets the corpse to answer questions? "No don't touch that body! Rak's as you all know carry disease C! We can't cure that magically it's terminal!" who the heck knows anything about Raks without knowledge monsters, and who takes knowledge monsters? There you go: Still illusion, and a ruse. PCs will not even make it to Silver flame city. Hoohah. hope that wasn't too long or silly. |
| ChronosCrow06-11-04, 01:54 AM | I kind of like you're idea too and have decided I'm going to use a loose version of it, but I need a bit of help myself. I'm starting the PC in the ranks of platoon in one of the last battles of The Last War, but I dont' want them to adventure together for 2 years. I want the PC interaction and learning in game. So, I need some kind of catalyst at the end of that battle that makes them all split up after the battle, but plan to meet up 2 years later in Sharn in enough time to use the supplement adventure in the back of the book. Got any ideas anyone? |
| Saurenda06-11-04, 02:06 AM | Celebrating the aniversary of thier victory. This would be a big deal for the players no matter how far they split up or what else they do. A battle won is a battle to be celebrated. |
| LuciafSlayer06-11-04, 09:25 AM | Let me clarify, that I never intended the characters to have been adventuring for the two "lost" years. They all tried to readjust to life as citizens. They are getting together to celebrate a holiday, it will be the first time they have seen eachother in a long time, possibly since the war. That's why there should be a lot of character development and role playing going on, because they will be revealing what they have all been upto. And for what it's worth I don't intend on the pc's side winning the battle at the beginning. Their brigade will win. I plan on one of the off field generals calling a retreat with a horn or some sort of loud signal. The pcs captain sees that the onfiled commander is waving the flag which will be the signal to push forward and continue with the fight. Even though the pc's brigade will be almost completly diminished, their captain will call for them to stand and fight. The pcs will have to decide if they stay, or flee. But the tide of their little battle will turn when their captain kills the captain of the opposing brigade. Then the enemies that were facing the pcs unit will retreat. But the overall battle is too great, and soon the pc's captain will look to those that stayed, and nod to them. They will retreat. But the pcs will have many decisions to make during combat, that's what will define them at the start. And plus the fact that they met with overall defeat that day, that will be something that will stay with them forever. |
