| Uratoh03-30-06, 11:35 PM | Debating a Dolgaunt as a short term antagonist for my PCs...sort of a mastermind behind an apparent 'turf war' between a couple goblinoid gangs in Sharn. I'm wondering what lv to start him at...how much personality/etc a Dolgaunt would have...His minions would be some Dolgrim and Chokers, but mainly at his hideout..he'd go out on his own disguised mainly... Also, debating if he should go with typical Monk, or as Rogue... My PCs are currently lv 1. Im debating if I use a typical dolgaunt, or give him levels right off... |

If you stat it, they will kill it. |
| Uratoh03-30-06, 11:44 PM | well yes, but sometimes I like to see how far villains go on their own. amazing how a well made plan can actually keep someone with stats alive. |
| (Psi)SeveredHead03-30-06, 11:46 PM | Always give named villains levels - even if it's just one level of fighter. Also, he'll have elite stats. And give him heroic buddies, too - he's more likely to survive a fight that way, and if he dies, any of his surviving buddies could take over as a nemesis. |
| Tek03-31-06, 12:48 AM | The Binding Stone and The Grieving Tree (both excellent novels) have a Dolgaunt that is both a very cool character and a great mini-antagonist. He's got style and character (much more so in Grieving Tree) and really works out well. Give him some character levels so they can't beat him right away, have him reappear a few times, and give them a reason to hate hate hate him. When you have that reason, branch off that and add character to the dolgaunt, so that basically, they will really hate him. (and I think that anything with int 10+, monster or not, can make a good BBEG) |
| Uratoh03-31-06, 12:53 AM | Hammered out his details...he's got elite array, dump in con, extreme into dex. He's incredibly hard to hit, difficult to approach, but if you can hit him and deal with his DR, he has a glass jaw. deflect arrows, imp trip, etc, he could harry the PCs for quiite awhile. |
| Uratoh03-31-06, 01:12 AM | What;s the thing's name? I need a good Dolgaunt name... |
| AvonRekaes03-31-06, 10:51 AM | "Abrutax"? I dunno, I'm not great with names. See if The Red Robed Wizard can help with his Names... thread. |
| ekomega03-31-06, 03:42 PM | The one in the novels is named Hruucan. He's very much an intelligent being with feelings and motivations and everything, except he's really scary. |
| Aerowyn04-01-06, 07:28 PM | Nruh'meer the Hunter is a "mini-boss" in my current campaign who has faced the entire party once and lived. 14th level dolegaunt monk who had a penchant for kidnapping noble families and killing them. Incredibly sadistic he is but a pawn for his Illithid master (Illithid Sorcerer) who masterminds all of the plans. Remember that monks generally have a good speed for running away to fight another day and that as a PC class he can be off doing his own "adventuring" when the players route his nefarious plan which allows him to level up with them and come back to haunt their carefully laid out plans. For naming conventions of Aberrations I generally take an adjective, throw a consonent in it somewhere, rearrange the letters a touch so I can pronounce it and then add an apostraphe followed by another consonent and a long vowel sound with another consonent capping it off. Colorful - throw in a G and mix it up Froolguc now add the apostraphe Froolguc', add a consonant - n, long vowel sound "ii", and another consonant to cap it off - g Froolguc'niig this ends with a g so for symetries sake I'll add an E at the end Froolguc'niige which will be pronounced Frool (drool) guc (guk - hard K sound) niige (nEj) just my 2cp |
