I was trying to stat out an analogue for good old Victor Von Doom, and I was thinking he'd probably be an artificer... what do you think? Sound good, or do you have a better idea? And how would I tweak his background?

Hmmmm.

Artificer works, although a bit of wizard might be appropriate as well (it's downplayed, but he dabbles in sorcery in the comics). He's far more renowned for his inventions than his mysticism.

Ya, Artificer is a great choice. Personaly I feel that it fits his style of magic too. He's less about waveing his fingers and throwing fire balls and more about makeing Technology/Arcane hybreds.

Heh, give him some armor and have him make some warforged with armor plateing that looks just like his and you've got yourself some Doom-bots too.

Heck, I'd be willing to go something like Artificer 5/Renegade Mastermaker 8 or so. He's an archvillain, so he gets PC levels. Depends on what version of him you want to make, though.

Cheers,

Isn't the Lord of Blades supposed to be Dr. Doom? At least that's what KB has always indicated.

Surely he's more Magneto than Doom?

I agree with Save-vs-DM, definitely Artificer/Renegade Mastermaker; I'd make him a 'marked member of House Cannith, high ranking, from Cyre; assumed lost (maybe Merrix is even trying to make sure he's dead and thus no threat). Add a couple levels of Warlock for the mysticism/sorcerous aspect (and maybe additional explanation for why/how he survived the Mourning). Maybe when the Mourning occured he was on the edge of the mists and was only horribly disfigured or some such... Whatcha think?

I'll toss in more as it pops into me brain.

I believe that KB has said that the Lord of Blades is supposed to be LIKE Dr. Doom, in that he is an arch-villian who should level along with the group such that he will always give the PCs a run for their money. I don't think that he ever said that the LoB was created to be (or inspired by) Dr. Doom.

ohhhhhhhhhh ... well still .. couldn't you use the LoB as a starting point and build from there to make him more like Dr. Doom?

Enh, the mechanical supergenius (most of his levels are in Artificer) and ruler of his own small nation thing both fit Dr. Doom. And KB has said that the way he intends LoB to be played is Dr. Doom-esque -- he's a constant nemesis to the PCs who levels at the same rate that they do, and every time he seems to have been killed it turns out to be a trick.

As far as making LoBster Dr. Doom-like, that's just it -- Dr. Doom is already a very versatile character, and there's no particular trait he has -- the genius intellect, the counterintuitively devastating charisma, the immense prowess in combat -- that LoBster doesn't already basically seem to have. LoBster's built-in combat weaponry matches Doom's battlesuit pretty well, and LoBster is certainly just as much a master of the magic arts as Doom can be said to be (not as *complete* a master as someone like Mordain the Fleshweaver, who's a dark version of Dr. Strange, should be, but someone who knows far more about magic than 95% of anyone else in the world, as he should be, being a 15th-or-so level character with at least 10 Artificer levels). The ability to make tons of exciting Eldritch Machines to throw at the PCs to try to destroy the world with is also a classic Dr. Doom-ism.

Really, just toss in a little more angst, a tendency to refer to himself in the 3rd person, and a lot of Simulacra/Clones/WF Impostors Who Look Like Him to represent the DoomBots (possibly using the Circlet of Preservation to complete the effect) and you've more or less got it.

Dr Dooms nation of Latvia [or how ever it was spelt] Would make a good Kranathi provence, and theres nothing wrse for PCs than fighting the people who make the laws.

Sorry wasn't being disagreeable when I said he seems more like Magneto. It's just that his abilities aside he's almost a personality doppelganger. Charasmatic (ignoring mechanical score) leader of an oppressed minority, believing in their eventual domination of the lesser races. Willing to do the ugly to ensure his eventual victory etc.

Anyway just a thought.:)

Yeah, the leader of the oppressed thing is definitely a Magneto thing, though there are other parallels you could draw as well.

Dr. Doom's attitude toward Latveria has never been quite so obviously one about underdog vs. imperialists so much as it's been about his own personal lust for power -- but then, the LoBster's own personality depends a lot on how you play him. The default approach does seem to be as a racial messiah, but for all you know that could be an act and his only motivation could be his own megalomania. (The people of Latveria, remember, are fanatically devoted to Doom, and he does make every effort to make sure they're treated well, even though his ultimate goal is ruling the world.)

Charasmatic (ignoring mechanical score)Uh, unless I'm wrong, the LoB statblock has him with an 18 Charisma, even after his juggernaught penalties are taken into account.

But yeah, the LoB'ster is definatly like a cross between Doom and Magneto.
He's got Doom's resources and methods, with Magneto's "I will make my people safe, by destroying all who would threaten them" mentality. Which is how I play him. :)

Oops, didn't have stats to hand. I'm glad to hear he has a high charisma.

My players have made a special effort to annoy and make an enemy of him, or rather his lieutenants. He's starting to notice his agents not returning from certain missions and is turning his attention to eradicating this annoyance. With the possible exception of converting the warforged wizard Dante to his cause.

I have to admit he's one of my favourite bad guys, he's not even the bad guy for the campaign.

Ah fun times:)

I need to use him more ... or rather, I'd *LIKE* to use him more, but my players seem to have acquired some weird 'all Warforged are evil' vibe since I ran Shadows of the Last War, and I have no desire to reinforce it.

Run them into a Reforged, perhaps a musician who gives all his money to the poor. (He doesn't need to eat, sleep, or breath. What's he gonna use it for?)

I totally agree Dr. Doom would be an artificer, BUT I think that THE FACELESS ONE in Dungeon's rescent campaign arc AGE OF WORMS totally looks like the FF's most dasdardly villain in a fantasy setting... check out the illustration (which rules!)
