My latest issue of Dragon arrived this weekend. The Dragonmarks article is "Spell Sovereign."

The Spell Sovereign is a prestige class that specializes in summoning and binding Living Spells. You need to be at least 6th level to take this class (requires the ability to cast 3rd level arcane spells, among other things). It is a 10 level class, and loses 3 levels of spell casting (1,5,9)

The abilities range from gaining a living spell as a familiar, creating a temporary living spell (no one knows how to create a permanent one), and various other abilities to control, enhance or imprison them.

Very interesting. I dislike the fact that its a 10 level prestige class. Given the low level nature of Eberron, I think these should be very rare. However, since this is obviously a very new class, I can buy that the PCs are likely to be the ones blazing the way in the class.

Sniff... my issue hasn't arrived yet (d**ned subscription!)

Sure sounds like something I would have fun trying to play...

Do you get to decide which spells you get as a familiar/create temporary versions of?

Me: "Hello, Wail of the Banshee Familiar... say hello to Meteor Swarm... he won't be staying long..."

XD

Of course, I'd have to be level 20 to do that, but the awesomeness is beyond words.

It doesn't specify, so I'd say yes (with DM approval).

It's expensive (500 gp) and can only be a 1st level spell until 4th level (when it can be 2nd), 7th (when it can be 3rd) and 10th (4th). It also gets some special familiar-like abilities as well (but better, such as Damage Reduction).

Have a living spell familiar of a Healing spell, then have the fighter in the group stand in it while he fights.

Doesn't work. The Living Spell template can only be applied to spells that have an area or effect. They specifically don't work on spells that are targeted. I can't find any healing spells this applies to (even the "Mass" cure spells are targetted).
