Think they might be implementing more dragons into the campaign for the benifit of DDO material? Read new Inquisitor.

Not in my Eberron they aren't :D

The little newsclips are adventure hooks for GMs, you're free to do with them as you will. Me? I figure it's a hoax, like the Loch Ness Monster.

It did say something about working with dragons in the last war?! That seems a bit too involved for this crew.

Given that "DDO", i.e. Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach (http://www.ddo.com), is set entirely in Xen'drik, I would think "No: the writers at Wizards of the Coast would not be setting dragons rampaging through Karrnath for the benefit of DDO."

Why would a Dragon want to do that?

Perhaps they should give up on publishing the Inquisitor...

Or rename it to the Enquirer...

Two things wrong:

1) Dragons don't rampage, although this is an unusual one and may NOT be a dragon.

2) Dragons choosing sides in the succession war? Openly?

Why would a Dragon want to do that? It's apparently a young adult white dragon, based on the size and color they've described. They're not very smart (Int 8, Wis 11), so it could just be doing something stupid. Remember, all that's changed about dragons rules-wise in Eberron is that they don't always have the alignments listed in the Monster Manual: young white dragons are still not a whole lot smarter than, say, ogres.

One must also remember that whites are often raised as meerly beasts by some races (frost giants in particular). Who's to say that this isn't a near mindless trained beast, or even a dominated or otherwise controlled creature not acting of its own free will.

There are a lot of possibilities for this creatures activities and thats why its only a hook, it for us as DMs to determine what's behind this dragon's activities and how the PCs are to interact with it overall :)

I'd think keeping a Dragon as a pet would result in rather swift intervention from Argonessen.

Dragons aren't omnipitant, and one could easilly dominate such a creature if they had the power. Vol seems like a perfect candidate for this. Anything to upset the balance of power in Karrnth, and to discredit the kings rule seems like a good thing from her point of view. That and making a pawn of a dragon would be just her style, anything to get back at those big ol mean dragons.

I don't see what it could possibly have to do with DDO... like the above poster said, that game is about adventuring in Xen'drik, and doesn't have much of anything to do with dragons or Karrnath.

I think it's a cool article. The point isn't to say "Pfft! Dragons in Eberron don't act like that!" but to say "Hmm... why would a dragon in Eberron act like that?" The article even includes a quote saying that dragons usually don't act like that. My guess: the dragon's being possessed by a rogue demon. Or psionically controlled by the mind flayers that live deep beneath Fort Bones. Maybe it's being blackmailed by agents of Vol who have trapped its mother and will only release her if the dragon lays waste to the villages that have been secretly harboring vampire slayers. Or maybe the dragon flew too close to the Mournland, and picked up some strange ethereal parasite that has poisoned its mind and filled it with bloodlust, but killing the dragon will only release the spores into the air, causing a widespread epidemic of mass murder...

Well also consider that most common people in Eberron don't even believe dragons exist. This proof would make all of Eberrons adventures want to go to Argonessan now.

My guess was that the young dragon read something in the Prophecy that was about some great danger to the world being born in an unspecified village in western Karrnath. Being young and not very bright, it went for the most obvious and most expiedient fix -- destroy all villages in western Karrnath.

Let him rampage. The coolest people in Karrnath are already dead.

not "with dragons", with A dragon, and "Briefly" too.
Dragons are rare in Eberron but they are around, someone is bound to meet them once in a while.

good point, but it would not make adventurers want to go to argonessen, there is a difference between adventuring and suicide.

Also I think the article is good, it upsets the perfect reputation Eberron has build up for Dragons. I mean the way Eberron speaks of dragons as an orgenized, encient uber power makes the avarage DM afraid of using them. But think again, Dragons fought the elves and the elves are still there, Dragons fought the demons and the demons are still there, dragons can't even control the chamber, made up of younger less powerfull dragons. They aren't omnipotent all knowing creatures. They are powerfull but that's it. They can be tricked, One can hide from them and do things without them knowing about it. If not it would not be much fun to use them.
This article is a very nice hook upsetting both people and dragons alike. Was it a real dragon and if it was why did it act the way it did and how will the other dragons contain the situation ?

I don't think that's true. Commoners in Eberron aren't that dull, they know magic exists, they know monsters exist, a lot of them have fought monsters in the war. I can't see why anyone in Eberron who's seen medusae, ogres, legions of Karrnathi undead, warforged, elementals, and displacer beasts would say "What? A giant lizard with wings? Impossible!"

I definitely don't see why knowing dragons are on Argonsses would make anyone want to go there. Most people do know (or at least believe) that there are dragons waiting to kill them on Argonssen, that certainly doesn't make anyone want to go there.

Correction, that's UNpossible. ;)

The Chamber does have disguised agents throughout the continent, and perhaps this Karnath official was merely talking about a past experience with a perhaps overly trusting member of the Chamber (who admited to being a dragon).

Also, I like to imagine the rampaging white dragon was feebleminded by Vol and is just real angry about it.

Dragons in Eberron are not the sacrisanct untouchables that so many seem to feel they should be. On the other hand they are not the rampaging brutes they are presented as in most other campaigns. They are merely given a role in the world fitting with their power, strength and most importantly their intelligence. Dragons have a culrure and society all their own and while it may be alien to the majority of Eberron there will be similarities.

There are factions and organisations within the draconic society and there are going to be criminals and renegades, just like any other race. There may even be a few well established criminal organisations run and operated by dragons.

The alternative is this could just be some rebellious youth who got in with the wrong crowd and the destruction he is causing is an initiation phase.

Plot hooks to use with the article:
Momma and Pappa want their little boy back. They don't want the humiliation of letting the rest of their draconic community know about their little darling's whereabouts and current actions so they hire outsiders to convince him to come home.

The white is a homicidal criminal on the run from draconic laws. The dragons could send over a couple of enforcers to deal with this renegade but that would raise as many questions as the presence of the renegade in Khorvaire in the first place. The solution is to hire some "native" mercenaries to track down and deal with him.

The Dragon is part of an enforcer team sent over to deal with some unknown evil the prophesy warned about. This dragon and his companions got overwhelmed by... something, forcing them to act openly and brutaly to contain the problem. It may be a nasty new plague (see redscale SI article), a lost hier of Vol and an encounter with the Emerald Claw or any one of a number of ancient and dreadful evils that slumber in Eberron.

There are many reasons why a dragon would act so brutaly and openly.

Or it might not be a dragon. In a world full of illusions, transmutations, and lifelike constructs, the possibility can't be discounted that it's someone else wanting people to believe it's a dragon.

I'm imagining that after this happens there are few bodies remaining, most assume that the corpses were destroyed or eaten by said dragon. Perhaps instead you have agents of the Blood of Vol, using this as a way to speedily bulk up numbers of undead soldiers as well as try to spark some unease towards dragons, maybe demand destruction of them or a war. Not to mention the fact that Kaius might also have a lot of questions aimed at him about why the military wasn't ready to deal with this and maybe even try to get him removed from his position...

Also, imagine Quori placing a vision in the mind of an impressionable young dragon, it goes off to play hero and instead ends up playing the role of their pawn. Helping create more discord and chaos, all the good to the dreaming dark.
