| Harmony's Sorrow05-20-04, 11:18 AM | Tried to post... 12 Dragon marked houses - 7 dragon marked races = difference of 5. Eberron has revealed 4 new races... which perhaps fill these roles. I can't imagine that someone desiring to play the new sig races of Eberron gets forced away from dragon marks. But does this suggest a fifth new Eberron race we've heard nothing of yet??? |
| Harmony's Sorrow05-20-04, 03:39 PM | Bump cause I re-made this thread. |
| jedi818705-20-04, 04:09 PM | its stated that shifters don't have dragon marks, also Kalashtar don't, and I'm pretty sure that Warforged don't have them either. That leaves the changelings, but I doubt they will either due to mixed heritage. I think there will be a couple of extra houses who relate to one race, maybe even a number are for humans, or maybe the entail a number of races(like a house for Humans, Elves, and Half-Elves). And I doubt we will have a fifth race, although I'd love to see a suprise one. |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast05-20-04, 06:01 PM | I dont know, I think changelings are likely to have a dragonmark house, afterall they are masters at espionage, so they could be the House that deals with that side of things. Their mixed heritage wont stop dragonmarks, after all Lyzandar is a half-elf house, and there is one that is a Half-Orc house. |
| fourmyle05-20-04, 06:07 PM | The reason Shifters don't have Dragonmarks is because they're not directly involved in society, their bloodlines are disconnected from those of the rest of the world, hence, no Dragonmark heritage. Same goes for Kaltashar I bet. As for Warforged, well...they don't have any bloodlines at all, eh? 12 Houses, Seven Races....mmm, Humans (multiple Houses for them, I bet), Half-Elves, Elves (perhaps specific Aerenal and Valenar Houses), Dwarves, Half-Orcs, Gnomes, Halflings. Let's see, 4 Human Houses, 1 Aerenal, 1 Valenar, 3 Half-Elf, 1 Dwarf, 1 Half-Orc, 1 Gnome=12 House. Likely something like that. |
| Moog Haruk Toog05-20-04, 08:48 PM | We know for sure there is already one halfling house. Jorasco. The "Least Mark of Healing" is available to the halflings of House Jorasco. The feat grants a one-time choice between cure light wounds 1/day or lesser restoration 1/day. The feat also gives the bearer a +2 on Heal checks. |
| Stormtalon05-20-04, 09:31 PM | Actually, the article in Dragon states that only the PHB races can have dragonmarks. I suspect it's (mechanically speaking) partly to give people a reason to play the base races over the new quartet. Stormtalon |
| stone_dog05-20-04, 09:55 PM | Actually, I think it is because all of the new races are too new. It seems that they all emerged after the founding of the dragonmarked houses. Except maybe the changelings, but then we don't know how long those have been around. |

There might also be a metagame reason: To give the PHB races more appeal. 'Cause face it, the new races are just too cool. |

Although dinosaur riding halflings do have their appeal... |

Isolated cases of changelings may have been around for a while, but certainly they wouldn't have been considered a 'race' when the dragonmarks appeared. And sure, from a metagame direction, it gives the PHB races something unique and cool. But this doesn't mean that you have to take a dragonmark to play a halfling; the Mark of Healing may not make sense with the idea of your raptor-ridin' barbarian warrior. The three groups I've run have varied considerably in the number of players who wanted dragonmarks. Again, they are neat and give the player a story tie to the world, but they don't turn you into Superman. |
