Do dragon shards produce a magical aura detected by Detect Magic or are they just gems?

No, they are not inherently magical in their own right, no more than bat guano is magical, but it is a required component for focusing magical energies much like the guano turns into a fireball.

Its not so much that the shards are magical, but if you want to think of it this way, they focus and enhance magical "vibrations". Sort of like how a bell is just a lump of metal until someone with the skill and tools comes along to ring it, and it suddenly reverberates in a beautiful tone. Its not magic, just a normal property of the material.

I was under the impression they were magical, but the geodes they come from prevent the discovery by simply casting detect spells. Something in the nature of the casing stone around the dragonshard deterring detection.

That makes sense too however, if they were magical you would think that Wizards would give a school of magic and a strength (caster level) somewhere in the books - that I haven't found anywhere.

So that makes me believe they do not produce a magical aura.
