I stumbled across this (http://www.chessvariants.org/3d.dir/dragonchess.html) in my wanderings.

Of particular interest is this...
DRAGONCHESS is played on 3 8x12 boards stacked above each other. The near right corner of all three boards is white. The top board represents the sky, the middle board the ground and the bottom board the underworld.

Interesting. It needs a new name perhaps, but it sounds like a solid fit for Eberron.

Didn't Star Trek have a multi-tiered chess game?

I actually built a Dragonchess board years ago... it was a ton of fun to play. Pieces could travel between boards, and their moves and abilities changed depending on which board they were on.

It was created by Gary Gygax, and was first featured in Dragon #100.

This is great. I think with a little modification it could be very Eberron. I'm thinking you could use the symbols of the houses: Unicorn, Gorgon, Displacer Beast, etc. And maybe work in the original 5 sons and daughters of Galifar. Also religions? Here's some ideas.

By the way, Tysonium, how did you construct the board for this?

King - Galifar
Mage - Aundair
Paladin - Thrane (Silver Flame)
Cleric - House Ghallanda
Dragon
Griffin - House Vadalis/House Jorasco (are they both griffons?)
Oliphant - House Cannith (use Gorgon instead)
Hero - Cyre?
Thief - House Phiarlan/Thuranni (use Bard instead)
Elemental - House Lyrander
Basilisk - House Medani
Unicorn - House Orien
Dwarf - House Kundarak (use imp, from symbol, instead)
Sylph - Brey/Breland (floating manifest zone in Sharn)
Warrior - Karnn/Karnnath

Its interesting there's no queen listed, but I don't think much is mentioned about Galifar's wife either, so it fits the popular image I guess.

There is a common board game in Eberron very similiar to chess. It is called Prophecy.

Its origin are lost in the past. Humans seems to have learned it from the elves that have learned it from the giants. Because many of the pieces represent dragons and other creatures related to them (The traditional version of them, at least. Today people usually play with more stilized sets that are almost unrecongnizable for what they should represent, ther are even more modern sets that use for the pieces the Symbols of the DM Houses and/or important poitical figures, but they are considered a kind of novelty :) ) some sage suspect that the Giants derived the game from a more complex version the dragons used to play.

I picture the Lords of Dust & other such fiends playing a game similar to the Reflective Game of Klinzha (http://www.tasigh.org/takzh/variant.html#reflective). The pieces are representative of mortal souls...

I made the 3 boards out of plexiglass with holes drilled in the corners... very long screws and nuts as supports, so it could be disassembled for storage. I made the board squares out of shelf paper that I interwove (blue/white for the sky, yellow/green for the ground, red/brown for the underdark). The pieces were originally stained spools of various types, eventually replaced with gaming models. It was a pretty decent set, though I'm sure I could do a much better job of it today.
