| spamfiltre04-01-05, 04:43 PM | So, I have this idea for a character with the mark of handling (awaken, not summon nature's ally), who basically wants to create a community of awakened creatures and trees. The initial goal would be to set up a kibbutz-style community (chaotic good), and let it grow. My character would use followers or expert hirelings to provide the skills and training for the building blocks of a sustainable economy. A future goal would be to create a sovereign nation. I've been thinking, and a large island might be the best place to start this, but welcome other ideas. So, I'd like thoughts on this from others who might have considered carving out a nation as a storyline for their characters, and I'd also like to know how DMs have dealt with potential abuses of dragonmarks. I know the ECS says that the houses keep a close eye on anyone with a dragonmark (that they know of), but if Awaken is one of the powers, then there must be someone out there awakening creatures (potentially daily). How would you handle the House reaction to this? At what point would your House npcs consider this abuse of the mark? |

(Except for a PC I am just now making with a player for the same reason). I think his little "nation" would be perfect inside the Eldeen Reaches. Other nations respect the borders of the Reaches (except Aundair kinda). All the character needs to do is get the other Reachers to recognize the borders of his domain. His House might try and persuade him to return, or even threaten him with exile from the House. |

Exile would probably be what happened if he refused to play by House rules... unless they House WANTS this to happen... but thats only in the "darker" side of the houses... could be an interesting campaign idea for later.... |

Heck, if I were running, once he started doing this, his house would try to get him to stop and come "home." If he didn't, the later on his little community would start to meet with "accidents," and there would be more "random encounters" on the road with him. Possibly resulting in his death. But then, I'm used to Shdaowrun, where you never, ever "quit" a megacorp. You get fired. Into a dumpster. wrapped in newspaper. |

But as long as you don't interfere with their business, they don't care. They are NOT Shadowrun megacorps. "Awaken" is hardly their real business. |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast04-02-05, 09:59 AM | I think House Vadalis would protest your plans. Creating a community of this nature is unatural to say the least. The House of Handling is already on shaky terms with the druids, and something like this could tip the balance to hatred and increase the problems with factions like the Ashbound. That is something House Vadalis certainly wants to avoid at all costs, and I think exile is likely if you dont take their advice. That said, I doubt the House itself would make an effort to dispose of you. Much more than the other houses House Vadalis considers itself a family, and killing a family member over a dispute like this doesn't seem their style. However, individual family members might seek outside aid to deal with you, so its still worth being careful. |

Lesseee.... he is cutting into their profits by deriving them of dragonmark services and not only that, he's running off to create his own sovereign nation, effectively leaving the house. About Shadowrun. I know they're not megacorps. But they're big merchant houses who remain neutral in war and ignore kingdom borders. They have as much power as normal nations. I'd expect Vadalis to react the same way a noble house would if one of its scions went into a foreing land and attempted to conquer it. Take care of the problem and apologize. |
