| Nightchill07-18-04, 12:05 PM | Let's say a character was from one of the Houses, but left to become a Cleric. She's been faithfully serving the Silver Flame for a few months when suddenly a dragonmark appears, blazing across her skin. The House learns of it soon after. Would the House expect her to give up her Cleric duties? Would they pay her the respect due to a dragonmarked character if she didn't return? Does the Silver Flame demand utmost dedication in matters such as these? Can the character keep both the Church and the House equally happy? Any insights greatly appreciated :) |

Remember the dragonmarked houses do not have an all inclusive power over the extended family. They do not control people in that manner. The reason people do what the power strcture says to do is quite like why those do in a church, not because of some law or other forced manner but because they choose to as disciples of the religion. Its stated in the ECS that the houses watch marked people closely and are very selective about inclusion and breeding, but nowhere is it stated that they force people to work for the house or its conglomerate of guilds. As such events like these should be taken on a person by person basis. |

But there are certainly people in the world with dragonmarks who are not attached to a house (such as Failin in Shadows of the Last War). The more powerful her mark became, the more pressure might be applied; in addition, if she began using her mark in such a way that it specifically endangered the business of the house, they might take offense and act accordingly. But this is largely up to the DM. It would be perfectly possible for her to maintain cordial relations with the house and continue her religious devotions. |
