Dragonmarked Cohorts? [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-17-05, 04:56 PM Are there any special rules or guidelines about a non-Dragonmarked character having a Dragonmarked cohort? I understand that the Dragonmarked houses are mercantile houses, but cohorts are different from hirelings. Maybe I'm thinking the Dragonmarked sorts are more snobbish/elitist than they usually are, but, for example, would a House Cannith Dragonmarked sort feasibly become a cohort to a Warforged?

Merrix d'Cannith himself (despite his evil alignment) seems to have a caring, almost father-like demeanor when it comes to Warforged. I'm sure that there are some condescending members of House Cannith which view Warforged as former property, while others view WF as companions, equals, or even family.

It's possible for a WF to have a dragonmarked cohort, even though the cohort might not see himself as a cohort... if that sounds remotely logical.

08-17-05, 05:49 PM I doubt that many cohorts think of themselves as "cohorts." I could certainly see a Dragonmarked NPC being the 'game-mechanical' "cohort" to a player. It should have some good story to go with it though.

On the flip side, the NPC in question may not have very much pull with his/her House however. The House will realize that the NPC has more loyalty to the PC rather than the House, and the NPC will be treated accordingly.

I can certainly conceive of it - but it certainly wouldn't be one of those "I took the Leadership Feat and hit Level X, so I want a Dragonmarked Cannith Artificer buddy". It would probably end up being something that would be developed in play. For instance, that certain Warforged managed to REALLY save the Cannith's bacon in some fairly spectacular fashion. Maybe not a "life debt" kind of thing - but certainly some connection that's stronger than being a contact, and rather more like an ally. In other words, the warforged has done something to earn the loyalty and/or great friendship of the Marked cohort.

I'd say that there are other ways you could get a dragonmarked cohort and actually be able to call him a cohort. Maybe your character is a member of House Cannith, a dragonmarked member at that, and you take an apprentice - the cohort. It makes logical sense. Just ignore all that apprentice stuff in DMG II, if I was you.

You can always explain cohorts as something other then cohorts, and that's what alot of people do. Maybe its a lover, or a best friend, or maybe its just some guy who got hit in the head with a rock and started seeing the PC as a living god.

08-20-05, 01:58 PM An other way to have a warforged have a dragonmarked cohort is if the cohort is assigned to study the evolution of the PC and his role in the world. The cohort would be loyal to the PC as the he inspires something within the cohort: whether it be honor or greed.
