Maybe I've missed it, but other than the pic of the Dragonmark Heir, I can find any reference to where Dragonmarks appear, and how big they are on average. (I know a Siberys Mark covers a very large area)

Is there any set area and size, or are they personalized by the user?

I was under the impression that this can vary from person to person. I see no reason why you couldn't have a dragonmark anywhere on your body.

If a rule is actually written I would probably rule otherwise. Placing the dragonmark could almost be as interesting as having one. ;)

Don't know about size, but the location is anywhere you want it.

Marks seem to be located randomly on the body, but make sense to be tied to fitting locations. The Wizard I'm currently playing has her Least Mark of Scribing on the back of her right hand, for example.

Size-wise, dragonmarks apparently get larger as they get more powerful, however, how large they get is tied to how large the mark is when it first appears. Generally speaking, a Least mark looks to be between four and six inches across, but this could vary from person to person and even from house to house. The artwork we've seen of dragonmarked individuals seems to support this -Cannith marks tend to be smaller than average while Lyrandar and Jorasco marks tend toward the bigger side.

Size also probably varies with the physical size of an individual.

If we assume a 5-inch height to be the average size of a Least mark, we can then extrapolate the relative sizes of the more powerful marks based on the from of the least mark contained within: 10-12 inches for a Lesser mark, and 16-20 inches for a Greater.

Siberys marks are generally agreed upon to cover the bearer's entire body.

Kinda what I figured.

So the Bard having it on his left forearm is completely reasonable.

Just FYI, a dwarf with the Siberys Mark of Warding on his chest is shown on page 81 of the ECS. A female human with the Least Mark of Making on her neck is shown on page 156 of S:CoT. A female elf with the Least Mark of Shadow on her left forearm is shown on page 49 of the PGtE.
From the pictures (as Straylight points out), assuming they're accurate, it appears that the marks are not always the same size even if they're the same kind. So the Least Mark of Storm on one Khoravar may be smaller than the same mark on another.

True but some are not so... intuitive.

Thought I do find the idea of an elf with the Least Mark of Shadow accidently disguising self when doing an mocking 'impersonation' of someone funny.

"Yeah, and don't you hate it when Uncle Faren is all like 'Hey you kids stop sneaking across my lawn!' . . . Man I think something's wrong with my back . . . why are you all staring at me?"

in my campaing... when the mark come out it hurts a lot... like a thousand needdles breaking your skin... ok ok... it tatto itself in the skin of the poor guy... normally they appear in the middle of a battle or in some ocation that proves itself worty of say "save fortitude"

about where... well I said that they appeared in some places depending on the mark... sentinel appears in the chest... passage appears in the forearms... shadows appears in the shoulders... storms in the back... etc.

You may want to smack them, but ... within the rules and all, it is feasibly possible ... you never know where those pesky dragonmarks will show up next ... and besides, it can work the otherway around too ...I mean ask the girl who has the dragonmark in the middle of the .... or the guy who has it on his nose ... or ... well ... you get the picture...

I leave the choice to the player. So far only one of my players has decided to pick himself up a mark and it was Sentinal on his left arm (shield arm)

ok ... so maybe it is all relative to your campaign ... in some, DM's Choice, in other's players' choice. Pick one, you'll probably be right.

Reading this thread, I'm reminded of the old Marvel comic book series Star Brand; at one point, the protagonist, Ken Connell, attempts to re-locate the Star Brand on his body, and tries moving it from his arm (its original location) to his head, above the hair line. It proceeds to burn away the hair in that area, to remain clearly visible.

Later, when he encounters the Old Man who gave him the brand in the first place, the elder advises him "if you move it again, try to avoid mucous membranes."

--------------------

More reasonably, yes, the marks can manifest anywhere on the body. I suppose that in theory, they could manifest on any epithelial tissue, which would include most of the respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems, as well as anywhere on the skin.

However, the point (for Eberron) is that they are Marks of the Prophecy; the very concept underlying them requires that they be visible, exposed, in a symbolic sense, and that they enable their bearers to fulfill their part in the Prophecy.

If, for some reason, a character did manifest a mark in an otherwise "embarassing" place... such a thing would suggest a remarkable role for that character in the Prophecy, and probably not as a matter of embarassment, but of intimacy.

It might just be because I game with teenage guys like myself, but honestly whenever someone discusses the inappropriate appearance of a dragonmark, the phrase "+1 Wang" keeps running through my mind. :embarrass

What about the house Lyrandar airship commander with a tiny mark of storm on his middle finger? He can show it to passing Lyrandar airships as a sign of respect :D

On a somewhat related note, am I the only person who thinks that house Lyrandar has about the lamest power in Eberron? I mean, their economic empire is based on their magical ability to blow. And suck, if the situation warrants it.

What a bunch of hot air. :rimshot:

It might just be because I game with teenage guys like myself, but honestly whenever someone discusses the inappropriate appearance of a dragonmark...

But that's the point: we're talking about the Prophecy. The location of a dragonmark in Eberron literally can not be inappropriate: wherever it is, that's exactly where it's supposed to be. With dragonmarks manifesting in caves, in landscapes, in channels cut by lava flows or molten metals, in the very clouds of the sky, no one claims—no one would think to claim—that these things were placed inappropriately.

If a dragonmark appears in the falling plaster of a dingy flophouse in Starilaskur, such that only the tired, apprehensive old man who lives there can see it, that's something... intimate. Something personal. And maybe the presence of the mark gives him the strength to go and do something he would not otherwise do, the inspiration, or the courage to act where once he would not have acted.

In the same way, an intimately placed dragonmark on the body means something: it immediately becomes something more personal, more inwardly focused, something that can only reasonably be shared with ones very closest associates, and significant of that character's role in the Prophecy: perhaps it fortells that from this character's loins will come a new Patriach of the House, but one that will stand for most of their life in secret, hidden, as their parent's dragonmark was hidden. Perhaps the placement of the mark suggests that the character will take to husband (or wife) someone who can be trusted at a level beyond the normal bond of arranged or selected marriages within the House.

Take a step back from the prurient interest, and look at what a dragonmark means: to the character, to the House, the Prophecy, or the setting.

Yup, it means one of the cosmic forces controlling the heroes (if a PC has it) or the mystical force controlling world at large (if an NPC has it) is a pervert. :P

In all seriousness, though, I agree with what you have to say about placement being important or symbolic to prophecy, but I would not like to see an "intimate dragonmark" in any game I ran or played in; any more than I would like to see material from the Book of Erotic Fantasy introduced.
