Dragonmarks give characters who belong to racially-based noble houses access to limited spell-like abilities. Related to both of these new elements are a new type of magic item called dragonshards. Dragonshards come in three varieties, and can be used to enhance dragonmark abilities, bind elementals, or augment the power of magic items."

11-02-04, 09:56 AM Dragonmarks are mysterious tattoo-like symbols which show up within certain family lines amongst the races of Eberron (they are magical marks, connected to an ancient prophecy, so inheritance isn't exactly genetic, but they do stick strictly within family lines, and don't cross species even through cross-breeding).

There are twelve active dragonmarks, and they each appear within a particular species, including humans, half-elves, elves, gnomes, dwarves, halflings and half-orcs. Each dragonmark's family has become organised into a particular trading House based upon the magical abilities granted by their specific Dragonmark.

For instance, House Lyrandar is composed of Half-Elves bearing the Mark of Storm, which allows them control of the weather. This has allowed them to become highly successful sailors, and they control the largest trading fleets around the continent, more recently supplemented by elemental airships, which only a bearer of the Mark of Storm can control reliably. House Cannith, a human family bearing the Mark of Making, is the continent's largest producer of manufactured goods.

In game-mechanics terms, a character can acquire a dragonmark only if they are a blood-relation of the family which bears that Mark, and of the correct race. If they meet the pre-requisites, they can gain the dragonmark by either taking a feat or joining a prestige class. Dragonmarks progress through three levels of power, which can be accessed by taking further feats or PrC levels. There are also Siberys Dragonmarks - unusually powerful House Marks available only by foregoing the normal progression entirely in favour of a higher-prerequisite prestige class; and Aberrant Dragonmarks, the result of mixed Dragonmark ancestry, with odd powers and a fair amount of social stigma attached (you can take a feat to gain an Aberrant Mark).
