| polt11-24-04, 12:10 PM | Well, the title says it all. I would like to see a dragonshard on how the humans, and other races, of the different nations look. Of course a human is always a human, but maybe the Karnnath people tend to have dark hair and be very tall, while Aundair people generally are very slender and with red hair? I know we could make stuff up our selves, but this shouldn't take more than a single dragonshard to explain. |
| Dex The King11-24-04, 12:44 PM | Look at the picture at the beginning of chapter one in the ECS. There is a picture of five humans there. Guess who? It has been determined, and explained by Hellcow, that these five humans are each from one of the five nations. He then went through and explained which one was from where, and why. Let's see if I remember, from left to right, on the bttom of page 11: Aundair, Thrane, Cyre, Karrnath, Breland. I fail to remember most of Hellcow's description, but I'm sure you could look it up if you so desired. |
| debatedeus11-24-04, 12:46 PM | The Ask Keith Baker Thread has a little bit on this. If you look at Page 11 in the Eberron Campaign Setting you can see the picturing he is referring to. The question was what nationalities I'd assign to the humans on page 11, and why. So... My goal was to assign each one of the five to one of the five nations. Is the minstrel the perfect Brelander? No. But of the five, he made the most sense. So, my reasoning, from left to right: #1: Aundair To begin with, it's demeanor. She has this ever-so-slightly sneering air of condescencion about her that I associate with Aundair. Her nation is the most enlightened of the five, the most advanced and educated of the five, and she knows it. Second, she has chosen to wield a flail, implying martial training; and yet, unlike the two male soldiers, she is not wearing armor. To me, this says that she has a level of wizard or sorcerer tucked under her gown, and that when trouble strikes she'll have mage armor at her disposal. I'd go with a 2nd-fighter/1st-sorcerer, with mage armor, true strike, Combat Experise, Improved Trip, and Improved Disarm -- very precise in battle, using knowledge and skill instead of brute force. #2: Thrane He's martial and very serious, but in my mind not so dour as the man in red. The green and gold echoes the Exorcist of the Silver Flame, and he's carrying a bow (albeit a short bow instead of a long bow). In comparison to an Eldeen Ranger, he's very clean-cut, he's got decorative motifs on his sword, and nothing particularly says "devotion to nature". But from his expression, I get a sense of strong devotion to a cause - something he considers a noble fight. So, Thrane. #3: Cyre Cyre was a peaceful nation reknown for craft and wisdom. This woman is unarmed (unless she's going to actually hit people with the staff, which I don't see). Her expression is less condescending than #1 and less weasely than #5. Of #1-#4, she seems the least likely to be looking for a fight (frankly, even though he's unarmed, I get the sense #5 is asking for your wallet). #4: Karrnath This man is extremely martial, and his expression is very dour. He's here to fight. He plans to win. He'll do whatever he has to. He's the dark shadow of #2. Karrnath is a martial nation with a very fatalistic, serious outlook -- he fits with that. #5: Breland I see this guy as a minstrel in a shady part of Sharn. He just looks like a weasel, like he's got connections with people you don't want to mess with -- and Breland is definitely a good place for organized crime. And sure, he looks like he's unarmed, but he could be hiding an elephant in one of those boots (I actually think the "lute" is a disguised wand of fireballs, a la El Mariachi). In my opinion, it is a mistake to say all the people from one nation look alike; it is more accurate to talk about their individual character as a nation. Remember that prior to the Last War, Galifar was a unified nation, and that although people lived in different regions, there was some amount of mobility. Also, I am uncomfortable with giving the humans of Eberron different looks based solely on their region like one might do in Grayhawk. The dragonmarked houses might have some common looks because they are related to each other (like some Cannith's of Cyre having red hair). |
| polt11-24-04, 01:01 PM | Wow, thanks. Still, i think i will make some different nation traits. Like Brelanders often have gold, brown and red hair. Karnnath beeing dark and with dark hair, maybe a little taller than the other ones, often wearing simple clothing. Thrane, noble and serious looking. Aundairians will be kind of snobby (well, they will be more likely to be snobby than others), and like to have pretty clothes on. |
| Zalaz Mavi11-24-04, 01:14 PM | I'm pretty sure that you're getting ethnicity and nationality confused. It would be like asking what race Americans are. Regardless, the release schedule for next year includes a Five Nations sourcebook and should have something of what you're after... |
| EvilDrPuma11-24-04, 01:24 PM | It bears remembering that Lhazaar's migration from Sarlona to Khorvaire took place only three thousand years ago on the Khorvaire calendar--a lot of time from the point of view of most historians, but not very long even from a microevolutionary standpoint. If you want to suppose that Lhazaar's group of immigrant humans was very diverse, it would be possible to account for major variations between the populations of the Five Nations on those grounds. Otherwise, it's more likely that differences are minor ones (tendencies, and not very strong ones, toward certain hair and eye colors), or even stereotypes without much factual basis. It might be even more likely that genetic markers would reflect descent from isolated subpopulations rather than from broad "national" populations. |
| Neofish11-24-04, 04:07 PM | I just want to see the different coat-of-arms that countries display, the favored color of nations and what not... I hope Five Nations delivers..... |
| polt11-24-04, 04:32 PM | Well, people in Scandinavia is taller and has lighter hair, then people in american, average-wise. |
