I'm going to play an elf (non-drow) who comes from the south of Xen'drik and has no conception of gp's and cp's. Instead, he realizes that dragonshards, both the eberron variety and the siberys variety are highly prized.

I'm starting above first level, so I'll have a little less than 1000gp extra cash when I finish making my character. I was wondering what the price ranges for dragonshards would be, and whether it would be viable to carry a bunch of them rather than tons of coins.

Thanks in advance

Dragonshard price ranges are listed in Magic of Eberron. That said, dragonshards are incredibly rare, and it would be like your character walking around with handfulls of diamonds... for this reason alone, I would not allow this type of thing in my game. However, if your DM likes the idea, there's nothing else inherently wrong with it.

While I realize they are expensive, I was thinking I'd be able to get away with saying I found them Xen'drik. Afterall, aren't siberys shards in particular drawn to Xen'drik? Thanks for the book reference!

Well... it's not just expense, it's also their value in being used for magical purposes. I wouldn't have a problem letting a player carry a number of gemstones instead of GP and SP, but we are talking about items that can be used to store spells, bind elementals, or boost dragonmark abilities. Allowing someone to start with these items seems to be potentially unbalancing to me.

Also, Magic of Eberron goes into the details of what it takes to find and harvest dragonshards. They are generally very dangerous to gain, even on Xen'drik. Like I said, though, it's your (and your DMs game), and while I feel that players should have to EARN dragonshards, if it's cool with your DM, then go for it. :)
