Dragonshards, cost, weight, theories, whatever [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-15-05, 07:12 PM Right this is mainly a question about technicalities involving dragonshards. I looked through the ECS and couldn't find stuff like prices for a dragonshard or any information about their economic value. Presumably they'd be worth quite a bit as they are a necessary component for a number of magic items that are highly valued in Eberron. I understand their uses and all that but I was just wondering about their costs.

Okay so on a related note I had an idea for either trolls from Iron Kingdoms or Tanaruuk to be infused with Siberys dragonshards (they were the unfortunate ones who got hit by them when they fall) and the subequent influx of magic energy will drive them batty and give them strange powers (I love 2nd edition wild magic, this would be a good place to put it I think)
So what do you guys think? what effect would any kind of dragonshard have if embedded into a critter?

09-15-05, 07:19 PM The short answer is how much do you want them to cost?

Dragonshards prices vary from size clarity and type to type (with Khyber being the most expensive, next Syberis and then Eberron)

But since shards are now part of the GP cost of item construction they can weigh what you deem appropriate for your campaign.

However Explorers Handbook apparently has guidelines on shard pricing (I'm not sure I haven't got my hands on a copy yet)

There are shards of such poor quality that they can only be used by grinding them into dust and then mixing that dust into metal alloys. Others are small and clouded with numerous flaws, each shard being worth only a few gold. This scales all of the way up to the massive shards that are used to hold the elementals in airships and galleons, each shard being up to 40% of the cost of the ship.

How much is a diamond worth? Are we talking diamond dust? A cracked, clouded industrial diamond? Or the Hope Diamond?

09-16-05, 11:28 AM right well I know they can vary and I understand that you can decide that a reddish orange dragonshard is less valuable than an orangish red dragonshar because what can be used to produce X and the other can't and that's all fine. But like gems there is or probably should be a price guide for a stones somewhere. I mean a diamond that size of your thumb will be much more valuable than one the size of your pink nail but they still put a general price tag on it. I was just hoping of something for the same in eberron or at least where they might be.

I will check explorer's handbook though I haven't been completley through that book yet.
