Keith asked us in the AKB thread if we liked the thread better or the Dragonshards, so I thought I'd make a topic about it.

So what do you guys want Keith to focus on? The AKB-Thread or The Dragonshards?

I like the Dragonshards better.

the AKB thread is a good source of inspiration, but its very unweildy with the lack of a search function.

Dragonshards are good as they are "canon"

but of the two i like the AKB thread better, it answers more of the questions i have regarding the setting.

and anyway i've still one AKB thread and half to read, yet. ;)

Well... since none of the scribes stepped up to the plate, I'll ask if anyone here wants to organize all the Ask Keith threads into one text document. I asked Mel if such a thing would make a good download on the website and she agreed.

The questions/answers should be organized by topic. That is, all warforged questions put together in one section, all Sharn questions together, all game mechanic questions together and so on.

If anyone's interested, email me paradox@wizo.wizards.com. Good way to earn a custom avatar!

I'd probably be willing to help with this. I don't know if I would have the time or the drive to do it alone. Anyone interested in working on this as a team. Either splitting it up by time, or by topic.

As for AKB v. Dragonshards, obviously my first choice would be both ;), but if it were to come down to one or the other I have to go with Dragonshards.

Dragonshards.

The thread is... out of control, at best. People don't follow the rules, and the same questions ("Can a warforged be a druid/monk/half-dragon/etc.") are asked over and over again. And then there are the ever annoying "What can you tell me about X?", "Hey, have you checked out my thread?" and "What do you think about this?" questions. Argh.

Sure, it's nice to have the thread, but it's just not that useful anymore. And even if the posters could somehow follow all the rules, I'd still vote for Dragonshards.

What we need is an "ask Keith Baker" forum, like they have at green ronin for "Mutants and Masterminds" one where all the threads are locked and only Keith can post answers, if a question deserve it, and maybe where all the unanswered question are erased after some time, and possibly one where the search function works, too.

How possibly would it to have a Dragonshard every so often in the mileu of "Sage Advice" where people send in questions and then Keith answers them.

If we managed to get the AKBs in a form that people can actually check them before submitting the question, and if we were to filter the questions through a few checks to make sure they meet the rules, I think something like that could work, and simplify things, while still allowing us to keep both of these useful resources.

The Ask Keith Baker Threads, they're really helpful, but the dragonshards are just so much more interesting to read. I find the AKB are mostly the mechanics and questions about the world, where the dragonshards are more fluff, and I enjoy that a lot better.

Just do what I did with the older locked AKB Threads.....go to Thread Tools then click download this thread. Load the TxT file into whatever word processor you prefer and search away :D

Now actually setting them up into catagories and subjects would be awesome,...but at the same time that might not be the best use of man hours. :|

Now as far as my vote,..has stated in the two threads Keith asked the question,...the thread is more important to me. Cannon is whatever the DM says it is. But anyone can work out stats,...it's the best thing in the world to be able to ask the man that created the game world how to do something/plot something/story behind.....etc etc Keith is the number 1 man for Eberron context,...you can't log into the FR boards and ask it's creator what he thinks of your ideas and where he'd fit a feat from Incarnum or whatever into his world.

the AKB and board threads clarify a lot of things in far greater detail then any Dragonshard.

That said, as 'canon', Dragonshards do 'set the setting', as it were.

But I can't really make a decision. As proven by TWO lengthy Q@A give and takes with Hellcow, the first over Clerics selling spells and the second on the Karrnathi thread over relative skills of something, you can really get into the meat of the setting with Q@A sessions. I have, however, learned not to post things requiring long answers in the AKB thread. He does a great job posting on the board, and I eat enough time up with long subjects as it is.

Others need to learn that, too :o. I find the Dragonshards only wet my whistle for specific things, but he does so much better on going in deep on individual threads I'm hardly going to discourage that...although he does spend too much time on it! :)

Anyway, later today, I'll come up with as many categories I can - Then we'll divide 'em up equally!

I would suggest...

Warforged
Shifters
Changelings
Kalashtar
Artificers
Five Nations
Rest of Khorvaire
Aerenal
Xen'drik
Argonessen
Sarlona
Dragonmarked Houses
Other Organizations (Gatekeepers, the Aurum, etc)
History

That seems like alot, and I would bet there would be some cross posting, but I think that would be okay. Someone I believe once asked what a Warforged would use for the blood component of a Homunculus, and I think that it could be cross posted as Warforged and Artificer.

I completely vote for more Dragonshards. 1) Keith's answers will gain the blessed "official" status in a dragonshard and 2) I'm guessing dragonshard articles pay more than answering the forums...we don't want Keith wasting his energy moonlighting on some security guard job or whatever.
Euangelion

09-25-05, 08:58 PM
I vote Dragonshard articles as being better, but the AKB thread is so helpful for getting the feel of the setting and the tremendous range of options it provides. I'd hate to see either disappear.

As for the catologueing of the AKB thread, I had tried to do that a few months ago on my own initiative, but was soon overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the information. The problem comes with replies that deal with more than one topic. The best thing IMHO would be an index that is hyperlinked to each use of the subject, if that's possible, rather than trying to rearrange the text itself. For example, if a reply mentions the LoD, the Emerald Claw and the Daughters of Sora Kell, it would be hard to decide which of those organizations would get the post, or it would really make for a monster file if there ended up being three copies of the one post, one for each organization.

Edit: Further suggestion - for example, for "rakshasha" the index could list which post #'s contains that word, with the post #'s hyperlinked to the specific post. So let's say that posts 7, 12, 30, 323, and 367 each contain the word "rakshasha." Clicking on the numbers would take you directly to that post. I'm no programmer, but that would seem to be much easier to use, and much easier to keep up to date as the AKB thread continues (please, oh please, oh please.)

Even though it's pretty clear, my vote still goes to Dragonshards. AKB is ok, but there's never enough time to really cover the interesting stuff. I like how in depth the Dragonshards can get.

09-26-05, 12:11 AM
I think I'd have to say Dragonshards as that is probably less time-consuming for you and in a more clear, concise package. That is keeping in mind that WotC does not edit it improperly from what you would like the article to read. I understand the need to edit due to space but it is an online article; it's not like there are printing costs and woes. Plus, not everyone (quite unfortunately) takes the time to read the boards/the Ask Keith thread. I'd like everyone to benefit from your creativity, information and educated opinions.

It would be quite wonderful if instead you could do a Dragonshard article every week. Keeping this thread would still be quite nice to see what we desire as far as information.

However, I'd like you to continue doing what you want to do and like to do; that's what's important. That's what keeps you happy and working on a project(s) that we all enjoy together.

I much prefer Dragonshards.

However, it is nice to have questions answered from time to time. Though the current AKB threads are being organized, there should be a plan for how to proceed after that.

Perhaps we could have a question-collection thread in which people would contribute questions. Only questions would be allowed in the question thread -- no answers (to keep down clutter). Keith would answer frequently-asked or particularly relevant questions in FAQ-type articles that are sorted by topic. For consistancy's sake, these would be the same topics used in the AKB-thread reorganization these other folks are working on. A topic page would get updated when Keith writes a new answer. Each month, a digest of "newly answered questions" would come out, so we only have to go to one page to catch up.

I think the ideal would be to have Keith do Dragonshards and simply chime in from time to time on threads that arouse his interest. After all, any idiot can ask Keith a question, thread be damned. It's easy as sending a private message to Hellcow.

Dragonshards, definitely.

I have the impression that the AKB thread is pretty much mined out. It was an amazing resource in the beginning, but by now all the big questions about the setting that can
be adressed in the thread have been answered, and we're down to little, nitpicky ones that need no canonical reply.

Any idiot can ask - that doesn't mean I'll have time to answer. In point of fact, when I get individual questions, I often direct people to the AKB thread. With AKB, if I answer the question, at least anyone who's interested can see the answer. In a PM, it takes the same amount of time and effort for me, and only one person sees it.

I'd say Dragonshards, but keep the AKB concept in there somehow. Maybe we need a regular question-time bit, of some sort. Somebody else knowledgeable to edit down the lists and take care of already-asked questions would be needed, tho.

Maybe just have more regular Dragonshards, but then have an editor present a couple of choice questions that can be answered at the bottom of the 'shard. (or have an editor present him with a half-dozen and pick two, in case of odd answers. Old unanswered questions can be thrown back into the mix regularly, so eventually everybody gets a word in.)

All I have to say is that the end of the AKB thread would be akin to the end of an era.

I personally like Dragonshards better, but it's really a toss up, because Keith's presence on the boards makes them all that much better.

I'm definitly in the Dragonshard camp on this one.

I really do appreciate and enjoy the AKB Thread but that has a way of scrolling into oblivion eventually as any long thread tends to do. What happens to the AKB thread in a year, in two years? Most of the knowlege there will probably be lost or too difficult to access for most fans of Eberron. Dragonshards however will stand a better chance of remaining available and given the limited time most DMs have it's definitly in a more useful format I think.

Either way I really applaud Keith for all his efforts to stay in touch with the Eberron community.

For me, its definately Dragonshards. The AKB thread is great, but it doesn't have the depth that I love in Dragonshards. The thread is nice for really specific questions that don't warrant a full Dragonshard, and it good fun to read the answers to other's questions. In general, though, the Dragonshards are more useful to games as a whole.

I read the Dragonshards religiously, print them out and put them into sheet covers, make my players read them, etc.

The ASKB has been invaluable for me in getting an even deeper understanding of the nuances of the setting; I feel like a significantly more informed authority on the setting for having read them (IMO, the ASKB may be a significant contributing factor in the 'why can't authors of Eberron books get it right?' conversation). However, I haven't read even the FAQ for at least six months; I'm simply too busy, and the document is too voluminous. It's not something I would make my players read, though I do recommend it. I was in the practice of copy-pasting the FAQ, but stopped when it got to 400 pages.

So of the two, Dragonshards matter much more to me. The ASKB exists in its current incarnation, which provides more wealth of material for enhanced authority than I can hope to read in the next year. I agree with a previous poster, who suggested that it might be nice to have an occasional Dragonshard in the format of Sage Advice, as questions that desperately need clarification will invariably crop up with new Eberron material.

As I've already stated in the AKB thread, I really value Keith's web presence more than anything else, and I feel like if he gave up the Ask Keith Baker thread, we'd lose a lot of that. Again, I know that's kind've selfish, but I like the ol' bovine.

Dear Keith,

Right now, I think you've answered the vast majority of sensible questions, and more Dragonshards and Eberron Expanded would be better. When new Eberron material comes out, like Magic of Eberron, there will be a flood of new questions, which might serve us better than Dragonshards, for a while.

I guess I'm saying that the AKB thread is great, but it has a point of diminishing returns, when the questions being asked become less frequent.

Most importantly, get paid for your work, and produce as much cannon for Eberron as you can talk Wizards into paying you for. We want you to continue to be as much of an active player in the production of Eberron material as possible. We'll see how it works out when Magic of Eberron comes out, but I might trade 90% of the AKB thread to get your name on MoE, especially in a "No, don't do that, it screws up the world" capacity.

Thanks again for everything.

I agree with you, but at this point the majority of questions are little ones that only one person really needs answering.
Since filling out a PM is more time consuming than posting a reply, as evidenced by the masses ignoring my once-constant pleas for their use on AKB in lieu of pointless, tedious, redundant posts, your workload will drop dramatically and only those who really want an answer will ask. And even then, we all respect that anything asked may not be responded to.

Having had a bit more time to (re)consider my initial answer on the AKB- June 2005 thread to this same question I have decided to switch my vote to the Dragonshards. An excellent point was raised with the issue of diminishing returns on the thread(s).

I think one thing that would alleviate the repeat questions would be for the search function on the boards to be fixed, and possibly even having a search box as part of the main template for the forums.

In the end though, it really comes down to you doing what you need to do, and the rest of us just having to deal with said decision.

I vote for Dragonshards, too. The AKB thread is great for responses to individual questions, but it is rarely helpful to other DMs and it is nearly impossible to find useful tips buried under the pile of chatter. The Dragonshards, by contrast, provide broadly applicable information that is readily available at any time.

I'll vote for Dragonshards if it's a pure choice - but I hope that Hellcow will continue to chime in from time to time, or perhaps post "talking points" as new threads once a month or something? Subjects which don't need a full-length Dragonshard, perhaps.

I respect that Splendide, but I imagine I was not the only one whose eyes glazed over when a billion and a half Ring of Storms questions came in and just wouldn't stop.
Or how about when SOMEBODY started arguing with Keith over whether the a favored enemy bonus should be morale or unspecified. How tedious was that? The poster used the excuse of delving deeper into the setting, but it was, in reality, a total waste of time.
Big questions, like, How the Undying Court views the Blood of Vol, or why Merrix ia evil or the difference are important, but they can be discussed or PM'ed.
It's high time this community stop relying on Keith for every little things. We're starting to see good supplements by authors who don't have a Q&A thread, so we've got to stand on our own. especially if it's detracting from Keith's professional or personal life.

Part of the "problem" is that Keith has said time and time again that the questions that most likely to be answered quickly are the quick "yes or no will do" questions. So, in a sense, Keith has encouraged "little ones that only one person really needs answering." I have several "big" questions that I would love to ask Keith, but I'm refraining from asking them because I don't want to add to his burdens, and the only thing that the community here in general could offer me is speculation, and I've got plenty of that all my own. So the questions don't get asked, and I wait patiently for a source, any source, of official information on the subjects I'm wondering about. But I have precious little control over what is published, so that wait may be in vain.
And sure, there's questions I'd love to ask the other contributors to the Eberron setting, specifically from 5N (I broke down and asked Keith a 5N question, but it took a while for the answer, which I expected, though the answer was excellent, for which I am grateful). But I have rarely seen any of the other contributors actively participating in these boards (which are the only ones I have time for), which just makes the insights Keith brings us through these boards that much more significant. I'd hate to lose that. Seriously, the Dreaming Dark/Riedra/Dol Quor/Kalashtar/Inspired stuff is so nuanced that only after more than a year of postings in addition to the ECS and Races of Eberron stuff do I feel like I'm even beginning to wrap my mind around the thing. Without these boards and the AKB thread in particular, I'd be lost on those issues.

Oh, Dragonshards, definitely. They're the only source of in-deph analysis of various topics, instead of the convoluted arguements and questions that sometimes invade and take over the Infernal Bovine's attention and time like some kind of temporal parasite. I personally enjoy his work when he is able to ramble on about so and such without breaking off in the middle and concentrate on a single topic at a time, instead of responding to stubborn posters in a discussion that only barely passes as a debate and not a flame war. :P

Yes, I'm looking at the two of you. Yoooouuuuu....... ;)

But if at all possible, the Ask Keith Baker thread is also an invalubale resource. I'd just perfer it that he concentrates more on Dragonshards if at all possible.

K. Baker is the man!

And Yes the AKB are difficult to sort through but that is because these forums do not have a search option, which I believe we should have a petition thread so that WoTC will implement this convenient method of looking up information on the forums.

Anyway, I do not want to see the AKB thread to go anywhere. I personally think that many of the questions he answers are viable and helpful to many people (please note I by no means said ALL).

People say that they want to know more about this and that subject...then if you would like to know ask a question about it...Keith likes to talk (no offence if you're reading this) and he tends to "add" or "include" more details into the subject that is asked. Just try not to make the question so "general" that is would take him two weeks to write about...

Below is the link to a thread (I'm sure most of you are aware of) That has a lot of details that can be helpful that KB has suggested. Maybe, we need to have more discussions like this?

This is my opinion and I do not wish to offend any.

Agreed. There are four AKB stickies, with a total of 240 pages. That's a bit too much.

And thirded. Could do better off dropping the two old ones, and just have the Archive/FAQ and current AKBthread be sticky.

I'm afraid you're out of luck. There may be an EE tomorrow - I don't understand the release schedule for these, but they've been sitting on one for a while - but at the moment the Dragonshards I've written are still waiting for WotC approval. I would expect them to start up again on the 17th, at which point we'll hoefully be back on track for the future.

I sent a mail out to 4 voulunteers tonight who will organize the threads into a text format, and the plan is to get it turned into a PDF file for download on the main pages.
