Another excellent article from Keith Baker. I'd been particularly looking forward to this one, as Dwarves were the only core race I hadn't really got a handle on for Eberron. This article goes a long way to correct that, and it's only part 1!

The explanation of the origins of House Kundarak was especially interesting, and makes good sense of them having the Mark of Warding. I wonder if Lord Mror had foreseen the coming war against the Daelkyr, and - rather than banishing the troublesome dwarves - had selected his most outgoing and resourceful folks to be sent to the surface and spared the coming conflict, whilst the wards were put up behind them, not to keep them out but to keep the Daelkyr in, until the surface dwarves had grown strong enough to oppose them.

If that's the case, it would be interesting if the elders of House Kundarak were ever to compare notes with the ancient Gatekeeper druid sect - I suspect they have a lot in common.

In any case, the Ironroot Mountains suddenly seem like a great place for some really brutal dungeon adventures. I look forward to Part 2. :)

I agree. All the races in Eberron have something unique to offer, but the dwarves felt the "least new" of the existing races as presented in the ECSB. This gives me a better handle on them.

I look forward to part two!

Actually i'm not all that exited about this one. It didn't really add anything new, so much as just explaining what we already know a little better.

Well, maybe part 2 will be more interesting. And now we want a dragonshard about the Daelkyr!

I think all of the Dragonshard are GREAT!!! With these and ECSB this setting is becoming very detailed and it just really comes to life!

It isn't about what you know, or what was said, but how it was said. What really struck (and impressed) me about this article is how the dwarves found out that while they were bickering and warring on the Iron Root Mountains, their greatest brothers were dying in the Mountains holding back one of the ultimate evils in the World. That kind of big reveal is both interesting to the story of the world and is a good template for Eberron-y story telling.

I really want more information on Gnomes.

Absolutely! The part where the Dwarvern leaders break the seal and find that their great former kingdom is no more was highly evocative - like the Fellowship's arrival in Moria, only on a vastly greater scale. About the only thing I missed from this article was a nice in-character bit of fiction at the start - I hope we see something along those lines in part 2, where it would perhaps be more appropriate.

I was very impressed with this week's article, another winner from the Hellcow himself!
As others have said, it is good to finally get more information about the dwarves and their heritage. Their background is perhaps one of my favourites yet, and I love the scene of the dwarves breaking the seals to reveal a fallen kingdom. On top of that, in true Eberron fashion, the entire nation of the Mror Holds is like a huge dungeon waiting to be explored :D
