Dragonshards? [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-22-07, 05:32 PM How often do the Dragonshards articles get published? Ever since the latest, Children of Khyber, I've been waiting for the next one to find out what the feats Hideous Strength and Death Curse do. But that article appeared over two months ago.

Any idea how much longer I'll wait?

My personal suspicion is that WotC wants to keep some of them for their new Digital Initiative. But that's only speculation, of course.

If that turns out to be true, all Khyber will break loose. WotC will have no way to justify or defend their decision.

Sure they will. It's their property; they distribute it as they see fit.

"It's ours, we do what we want with it, nyeh nyeh!" isn't a good defense. They'd have to convince us that distributing it through the DI is better for us gamers than distributing it for free through their website.

They certainly can't use the same explanation as for the cancellation of Dragon/Dungeon, "People get their stuff online these days," since the content was already online.

The issue here is my schedule. While there's a few Dragonshards done - which is why the Child of Khyber article suddenly popped up (which I wasn't expecting, actually) - what we agreed was to wait until I had a significant chunk of articles done so that they could appear on a regular, reliable timetable. However, I'm working a full-time job, writing a novel, and until a few weeks ago, I was working on a sourcebook. So the issue is that I haven't hit the agreed upon number of articles for the relaunch. Meanwhile, over the last few weeks I've written diatribes on the Silver Flame and Lycanthropes that are longer than most dragonshards. SO, the answer is likely that I need to pry myself away from the boards, eliminating the distraction until I've completed a chunk of Dragonshards.

So: I can't say exactly when, but hopefully soon.

WotC knows that the Dragonshards are popular, and that they are all around higher quality than most of the books that get put out these days. It would only make sense to put them into the DI.

Although, in all fairness, I would still like to see them come out for free, say maybe 6 months after the DI people get it.

I'd certainly love to be able to write longer pieces. The biggest challenge with Dragonshards is holding to the word count.

Given the choice, I'd choose "Short articles (or long articles broken into small pieces) for free" over "Long articles for money," so I can't see how making them cost money is better for customers.

I could accept a "Subscribers first, freeloaders later" model, though.

But, they already have the Dragonmarks articles from Dragon to put in their DI, so let us hope they keep Dragonshards free.
