Dramatic PC introduction vs risking the party killing him? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm taking over the running of an Eberron game as the PCs are leaving the Mournlands. the current GM (Yes Brent, it's you) will be bringing in a rogue/warlock. His backstory is that he was in cyre on the day of mourning, and has been in something of a coma/somesuch for the past years, only awakening now, and with levels in the Warlock class (Warlock/Rogue). Now the dramatic entrance would be for him to stumble twords the PCs, coughing or whatnot, as they're leaving, but they might mistake him for a zombie and cap him...

Zombie? But I'll be wearing a PC t-shirt and everything. :)

If they cap him with bows from a distance and put him below -10 hp then once they get to him and check him out you can just say it's some other poor slob who they slaughtered (maybe making them think before just killing the next guy).

If he doesn't get below -10 they should be able to tell from the blood flow alone that he's not a zombie.

Go for the dramatic entrance and if they slaughter him, say it was someone else, have a laugh, and then introduce the new character at an Inn instead. "Hi. It seems your party is in need of a Warlock/Rogue..."

You've GOT to go for dramatic. No question. If they kill him, it is a great story (these guys killed my PC on sight!), if not, it is a great entrance.

No lose!

Technically, I was shooting for 'in Cyre for a year and a day' after the Mourning, emerging from the mist with no memory of the period. This would be a passable explanation for the warlock levels, without the whole 'demonic pact' angle.

By going that route, it allows the character some spare time to add a few more levels of warlock after the first - I'm stepping out of the GM hot seat and rejoining a party of 7th-8th level characters, so he's not starting at 1st level.

My prior character was a Noble (Green Ronin) - not quite entirely useless in an adventure, but much more useful as a party patron and contact. He won't be rejoining the adventuring band at this point.

Now what could be interesting is a compulsion to revisit Cyre on the anniversary of the Mourning every year - that sort of fits both needs - a dramatic entrance, and a way for him to advance a bit beyond the initial touch.
