| SJE07-09-04, 12:19 PM | So I got Eberron and liked the setting. Trouble was, WotC didnt include a pull out map, like they did for FR. So I thought my problems were solved when I heard Dungeon would be doing the big Eberron map. I duly picked up a copy this week and paid my fiver. And ye gods! Its a terrible map. All it shows is large scale geographical features! No borders! No cities! no Lightning rail lines or trade routes! nothing except some boring green for grass, grey for mountains.... NOTHING! So it suxxors..... Hope this rant saves you making the same mistake as I did. SJE |

Check out the two or three other threads about the same topic. You'll find that two very talented board members have managed to solve the problem. You'll have to get them printed yourself, but the maps they did are VERY impressive. |
| SJE07-09-04, 12:32 PM | Ah- missed that by being in Turkey for the last 2 weeks. I got back & found Dungeon had just hit the FLGS> SJE |
| ChronosCrow07-09-04, 12:35 PM | Actually I went ahead and got it because I figured out a plausible use for it. I recetnly got one of the fan made maps printed out at 36" x 24" for putting on the wall and putting dry erase on. But there's one thing about those maps that trouble me. The PC's don't actually know the land near to half as well as the maps show, unless they have like 10 ranks in geography. There's no way for the PC's to know all the trade routes and country borders. So, instead I'm going to put up my big map/poster for showing adventure travel and disputed border areas and in between those times I'll cover it up with the much less detailed map because that map is what the PC's probably know. |
| JohnnyONeal07-09-04, 12:41 PM | The map in Dungeon is certainly attractive and presents a nice overview of the continent, but it's lacking in detail. For more detailed maps, here are two great options: Kildaere's map of Khorvaire (http://www.coveworld.net/eberron/lore-map.html) (PDF format) Sebby's map of Khorvaire (http://pages.videotron.com/sebby777/khorvaire_complete.jpg) (huge printable JPG) |

It costs a pretty penny so only do it if you really want one. |

I'm so tempted to print this on the plotter at work. To steal office supplies, or not to steal office supplies... |
| MrFilthyIke07-09-04, 02:23 PM | I'm buying 113 for the extra Eberron adventure, the map was always just icing for me. :) |

It's a package deal for lamination, backing and printing equaling about $90. That's a bit much I know so instead of getting the backing done by them I took that off making it about $70, it's $60 for printing and $9 for lamination. I'm having it printed at a whopping 36" x 24" because I can, not everyone should get one that big though, I'd advise one step down from that if your tighter on money. That should knock off a good bit too. With the thing just laminated I'll probably put it up on the wall with sticky tackt keeping it up. These maps are really detailed and in actuality the PC's don't know that much so I'll put the #113 map on top of it during times it's not needed. |

Sounds to me like Kinko's is REALLY ripping people off!! |

Sounds to me like Kinko's is REALLY ripping people off!! Easy to explain really. Kinko's is printing with what amounts to a large inkjet printer. If you have ever bought ink cartridges, you know these things are not cheap to run (even at wholesale, the cartridges for professional machines are fairly expensive). The map in Dungeon was printed on a commercial press. It may have been printed on an offset web press (that uses rolls of paper), like the magizine itself probably is, or it may have been done on a sheet-fed machine. Either way, after the make-ready is complete (plates made, test copies printed to adjust colour, etc.) the actual cost per copy for each map in the print run is very small. When the make-ready costs are added in, they are spread over the whole run. Even with the after-press folding costs, the map in the magazine is not immensely expensive to produce. Where I work we have a six-colour sheet-fed that could print about 30,000 of these per hour. |

Sounds to me like Kinko's is REALLY ripping people off!! No no, you've got it wrong really. The map is a bit larger than that, and the printing quality is very much a lot better. It's on professional grade paper and the ink machine is much better. It's mostly meant for businesses and artits really. The clerks were a bit suprised that a a non-business person wanted to use it. It's really a step above industrial mass-production printing really. And no, for all the trouble they have to go through to get something like that done, it would not cost anywhere near $8 to begin with. Though I agree that $60 is pretty high, $30-$40 is more reasonable, but then again they're Kinkos, a name brand, so it's going to cost more. It was the best I could do on short notice plus i didn't really mind paying that much. |
| Taurren07-11-04, 02:55 PM | I know that this is slightly off topic ... ...but I still am stunned by the complete lack of ANY comment from anyone associated with Eberron (Hellcow, WotC etc) concerning the 1 major problem with the setting that almost everyone agreed on. I'm really happy and impressed with what Kildaere & Sebby have done, but the ostrich approach from WotC really irritates me. |
| Ashrem Bayle07-12-04, 10:49 AM | My guess is that they plan to sell one. They can't talk about products that haven't been officially announced. |
| kildaere00707-12-04, 11:21 AM | If I were to guess....I bet they eventually do a DM screen with the map included |

I just made version 1.1 available yesterday. :weep: On the bright side, it did not need any errata. All the changes are mostly cosmetic, so you still have a correct map. I hope those $70 were canadian dollars... ;) |

Keith was not directly involved, and I doubt any Wizards were either. |
| kroh07-13-04, 12:52 PM | MAD Love goes out to Kildaere and Sebby for the work on the maps... Tres Shiek!!!! BAM!!! ANother Notch... OK I'll stop now... WalT:sad: |
