I also like how it details an "investigation"-type adventure, making use of the new feats like Investigate and Urban Tracking. These two were a little bewildering to me when I first looked at them, and its hard to make my players want to take them, with feats like Weapon Finesse as other options. But this adventure ought to clear that right up! I don't know about any of you, but I'm planning on introducing Ash and the Red Hammer now (3rd lvl) so that when I finally run this adventure, they'll already have personal ties to the area. I like the fluff/detail we've been getting about the Cogs from both Dungeon adventures. ("Queen with Burning Eyes" being the other) All in all, its great to see a nice, original adventure idea from the Keith himself; and pretty much for free, since I have a subscription anyway. Even if you buy the issue for just this adventure, its only like $5.00, right? What do ya'll think of "Steel Shadows"? |

I think there is great potential in places like the Red Hammer to detail the way warforged live in the city's underbelly. They seem like refugees, trapped in an uncertain world. Copper is an interesting personality, too. He is so disturbed, and it's sad that he is destroyed by his own creation if not by the PCs. I think it is a haunting story. The idea of "built by human hands" is a cool concepte too. He and the other warforged in Steel Shadows give some more substance to the whole idea of these living constructs. I think PCs with Search will do fine, if none of then have Investigate. I don't think that mechanic of the game will be an issue. I imagine most PCs immediately suspecting Shadowblack. The difficult issue is this adventure's level. Seventh level is a bit high for the PCs in my Eberron campaign. The highest PC we have is third level. So, we might miss getting Player Reward Points, something my players like. Because I think the RPGA retirement date for Steel Shadows will probably be November 1, 2004 - way before the PCs I DM for reach seventh, or even sixth. Oh well. |
