Ch@pel 06-25-04, 06:45 PM	Does anyone find it odd that Dwarves, arguably the masters of item creation, would take a -2 penalty on Cha, which is the most important ability for Artificers? There seems to be kind of a push to have Dwarf Artificers (there's one on the cover; the picture in the artificer description is a dwarf), yet they take a penalty on the one important ability for the class. I was thinking of saying that a Dwarf Artificer still takes a -2 to Cha, but that it doesn't count against him for the purpose of UMD checks to make items. It would still probably count against him when actually using the item, but I don't know. Whatchathink?

Kintara 06-25-04, 07:13 PM	Personally, I prefer to leave these sorts of things as they are. Not everyone is perfectly designed to fit in a role, even one they like or admire. You could take the Craft bonus they receive, and apply it to pertinent UMD checks too. I wouldn't bother, personally. I might consider making a Dwarven PrC for Artificers, though, that builds on their racial heritage. Even a feat might be appropriate. Edit: At least the dwarves can take pride in their superior mundane forging. All magic items start as masterwork items, after all.
Taigis 06-25-04, 07:57 PM	The character presented in the wizard section and in several of the pieces of art with the dwarven artificer is a shifter. Shifters get -2 Int. I guess the characters in the art just dont know about min/maxing Taigis
