| Rasputin4906-19-04, 02:45 PM | I was wondering if anyone had noticed any easter eggs as far as the real world is concerned. For example, the Treaty of Thronehold to end the Last War was signed on the 11th day of Aryth. This matches up perfectly with what used to be known as Armistice Day (now Veteran's Day), which was November 11th and ended World War I, which also a war so huge that some thought that wars would be never be fought again. Let me know if you've seen anything esle. |
| Steven Snyder06-19-04, 02:58 PM | Garyx, a Constellation that heralds Chaos and Destruction...that wouldn't be Gary Gygax would it? A town in Aundair called Ghalt, which is only significant when you realize it is located in a world where trains are powered by a source of near infinite energy. |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast06-19-04, 04:44 PM | Originally posted by Steven Snyder Garyx, a Constellation that heralds Chaos and Destruction...that wouldn't be Gary Gygax would it? I dont think so. Garyx is a draconic god presented in the Draconomicon, so if it was some kind of refence to Gygax, it wouldnt be an Eberron easter egg. |
| Senko06-20-04, 03:09 AM | I still don't get the reference to Ghalt. |
| Steven Snyder06-20-04, 09:34 AM | There is a book called Atlas Shrugged, that is where the reference comes from. |
| OtherNiceMan06-20-04, 10:55 AM | Kasha the Monk's flavour text talks about a helf-elf inquisitive called Journe. There is a RPG called Sky Realms of Journe. The illustration of Creilath the mater iniquistive bares a passing resemblance to Sidney Paget's illustrations of Sherlock Homes (and Jermery Brett from the TV series). The bard (far right) in the array of Humans from the start of chapter one looks (to me) like Prince. :) |
| Ezekiel06-20-04, 04:21 PM | My friend had that spontaneous reaction to the bard as well. "Hey, thats prince. Erm, I mean, the artist formerly known as Prince" Great thread btw, though I'm sorry to not have noticed anything else. |
| Lady Fierna06-20-04, 10:02 PM | Something wierd that I noticed: Under the Githyanki Society section in the MM (and PsiHB 3e), it says that the Githyanki Lich-queen devours the soul of any Githyanki who goes above level 16. Vol (a Lich-queen of sorts) is a level 16 wizard. Wierd. |
| Senko06-21-04, 01:55 AM | Well it does say above lvl 16 perhaps Vol is safe until she goes up to level 17 then she becomes lunch? |
| darkthought06-21-04, 02:09 AM | Originally posted by Senko Well it does say above lvl 16 perhaps Vol is safe until she goes up to level 17 then she becomes lunch? Last I checked, Vol was a Lich-Queen Elf. Not Githyanki. |
| EarthsShadow06-21-04, 03:21 AM | Karrnath sure sounds a lot like the mummy Karnack in The Mummy movie, the place I think. And considering that Karrnath has undead as a standing army, it sure does make some kind of sense to me. But I can't remember if the Karnack in the movie refers to the mummy or the location, but it's a tie in, that's for sure. |
| Scholar and a Brutalman06-21-04, 08:01 AM | Dreadhold in the Lhazaar Principalities: "Rumors persist that an important prisoner from Karrnath is interred here..." From Karrnath, eh? Perhaps the prisoner is forced to wear an adamant mask so no one can see his face? |
| jedi818706-21-04, 10:17 AM | Actually Dreadhold remind s me of Alkatraz for some reason. It also reminds me a little of Azkaban from Harry Potter, but that in an off itself is an Alkatraz. |

| Hanuman4706-21-04, 04:49 PM | And for that matter, the ruler's name is Kaius, who is definitely not a mummy. |
| EarthsShadow06-21-04, 09:42 PM | Originally posted by Hanuman47 And for that matter, the ruler's name is Kaius, who is definitely not a mummy. Just a vampire, another of the undead by the way. ;) |
| diablos66606-22-04, 07:57 AM | Hmmm... Imhotep in D&D. Now there's an idea! A greater mummy with loads of levels in cleric and a bad attitude! |
| darkthought06-22-04, 02:26 PM | and a couple in warrior. He's pretty deadly in combat on his own. |
| Remnant06-22-04, 03:28 PM | The way the nations are set up, the prominence of certain houses, and the style of some of the seals reminds me of stuff from the Battletech universe, but not in a strong way at all- I don't get the feeling of a direct influence. The mountain sanctuary of Adar reminds me of Shangrala. |
| Sereno06-22-04, 03:46 PM | Sharn seems a lot like NYC ... towers/skyscrapers, all races living together, etc. There was even an event when something called the glass tower was destroyed for no apparent reason and killed lots of people -- that, sadly, reminded me of 9/11.... |
| TheOneRonin06-22-04, 04:48 PM | C'mon guys, has no one caught the LotR reference? Valenar, home of the Elves (well, one branch, anyway) Valinor, home of the Valar, and where the Elves sailed to as they left middle earth. That one stood out the most. And the illustration of the City of the Dead looks a LOT like the City of the Dead from The Mummy. Come to think of it, I think the ECS cites The Mummy as one of the references the authors used when searching for flavor. |

Except that the Valenar are much more warlike than the people of Valinor. |

And Johnny Carson certainly made you feel like you were undead on many nights -- asleep but awake -- get it? Spooky, huh? Gives me a shiver just thinking about it. |
| Stouthammer06-23-04, 12:24 AM | In some of the original drafts of the scrips for the first Star Wars movie, there were references to a focusing talisman for the force, known as the "kiber crystal" which has also at times been spelled "khyber crystal" and finally in the 1978 novel, Splinter of the Mind's Eye by Alan Dean Foster, "kaiburr crystal", the plot of which has Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader racing to find these powerful crystals. The spelling changes but the pronunciation remains the same. I was reminded of this crystal by the references to the Khyber Dragonshards in Eberron. |
| Latif Khan06-23-04, 07:04 AM | anyone noticed the similarities of sharn or ebberon in general to the books by china mieville (perdido street station, the scar) ? anyway great stuff in there for inspiration. |
| Alhandra's Feisty Destrier06-23-04, 09:56 AM | 'Kaius' - sounds to me like 'Gaius', as in 'Gaius Julius Ceasar' |
| Alathayn06-23-04, 12:47 PM | Well, know the iron mask idea sure enough stikes me as true intend. I've allready wondered what becameof the true Kaius lll. |

Deities and Demigods, he's in the Pharaonic Pantheon... though in there he's a demigod of crafts and medicine. Expert 20 Though, I suppose that's not the same, but I just wanted to point that out. :) |

Expert 20 Though, I suppose that's not the same, but I just wanted to point that out. :) That's closer to the realistic protrayal of Imhotep. He was originally a mortal who acended to godhood. The movies just threw that whole "grinding with the concubine" thing in there to make it interesting for his fall. ;) |
| Ormus06-23-04, 02:06 PM | Those Valenar double scimitars sure look a lot like what the Elves wield in the opening battle scene of Fellowship of the Ring(in Mordor). They're both cool by me. |
| zootcat06-23-04, 02:54 PM | Karnak is a real place in Egypt. It was prominent in ancient Egypt and if you go there today, you will see the really cool ruins of the Temple of Karnak. Imhotep was an actual historical figure. He was the pharoah's chielf architect and he disigned the pyramids. (But I don't remember if this included the Great Pyramid or not.) In the movie The Mummy, the pyramids were located in Thebes/Karnak. But in reality the pyramids were 300 miles downstream from Thebes near modern-day Cairo. |
| Mike Czaplinski06-23-04, 04:00 PM | Khorvaire looks like it would be pronounced 'Corvair', which is of course a famous 60's muscle car that, among other things, was the target of Ralph Nader's book UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED (Basically, the heater worked off exhaust fumes, and as such was prone to blow up for no apparent reason). I'm sure that this is pure coincidence. Still: I'll make sure to keep my EBERRON book in a fireproof container....;-) MikeC |
| Azual06-23-04, 04:15 PM | Originally posted by Hanuman47 And for that matter, the ruler's name is Kaius, who is definitely not a mummy. a vampire ruler HMMMMMM  |
| darkthought06-23-04, 10:19 PM | Originally posted by Azual a vampire ruler HMMMMMM  But he's a good vampire. I think. He was maniuplated by Vol. That's how his country has undead in the army. |
| Slayen06-24-04, 12:47 AM | Originally posted by darkthought But he's a good vampire. I think. He was maniuplated by Vol. That's how his country has undead in the army. Well, he is technically Lawful Evil, his actions for the most part are good. He is even married to a CG Elf from Aerenal. He is a very cool and complex charracter. |
| darkthought06-24-04, 03:12 AM | I'm gonna try my hardest to get my players up there. :) They're about to make contact with the Chamber, but they don't know it. And contact with the Order of the Emerald Claw. I must get them into that country! I want to see what they do when they see the first Undead patrol. :) |
| Halflingspy06-25-04, 01:13 AM | Well, what I saw was the Glass Tower falling by terrorists in Sharn. That was a direct lift from this world I believe very strongly. ALSO the Church of the Silver Flame is a critique, or a 'fantasy parody' of the Christian church, especially when it existed in the 1000's, when the crusades started, and popes were having orgies and such. Lots of corruption amidst a very holy and pure idea. |
