Quick nubish question: In the back of the Ebberon Campaign Setting they give me a little starter adventure. I'm wondering about the encounter level ratings. Do the PCs get experience for every one of those ELs as they encounter them? I mean, does it make sense for them to get the same experience for talking to Sgt. Dolom as they would for defeating a 5th level foe?

I have recently started running a campaign using AD&D 3.5 rules. Previously I had been running 2nd Edition. I used the adventure you're talking about and I ignored ELs.

I rewarded experience for CLs of things defeated. I then added roleplaying experience for those that deserved it. I also rewarded experience for traps overcome.

That is my style. Not sure if that is how it is suposed to be done. Either way, I don't care. That is how I do it. ;)

Well, I originally thought you were supposed to award XP based on the EL of an encounter. However, apparently you're supposed to dish out XP based on the CR of each monster defeated. So for example, if it's three CR 1 monsters, you get XP for each monster.

I don't remember where it is on the website, but there is an article somewhere that discusses this issue. I found it after someone pointed out that I was wrong about XP being rewarded based on the EL of an encounter. I hate being wrong.

So then what of the Sgt. Dolom example? The EL listed is five, but they're not really supposed defeat him. They do, however, have to placate him via negotiations or diplomacy or whatever. What do the PCs get for that? Is resolving an encounter peacfully worth the same as if you had done so with force?

Experience is given for overcoming challenges. For example, if the challenge for the party is to get through a door, then they should receive experience whether they killed the gnolls guarding it, bluffed their way through, or used stealth to sneak past.

That being said, experience awards are arbitrary. Give the PCs what you feel is appropriate for the encounter.
