| Jedi_Master_Trobon12-27-07, 09:35 PM | I know that this will sound weird to some, insane to others and maybe even like the pure evil to some of you. However, I like Eberron and don't like 3.x at all. I know again this is an evil beyond all others and I would prefer if no one insisted on telling me this over and over. I am wondering if anyone has any information or ideas on how to make an Eberron game in AD&D 1E or 2E or a hybrid? |
| aelryinth12-27-07, 11:02 PM | You're basically asking for a homebrew rewrite. It shouldn't be that difficult. Base classes are base classes. Multi-classing is handled differently, and you'll have to adjudicate that kind of thing. Really, this is a strange question. The setting stays the same, you just need to change around some NPC's and spells to support it. ==+Aelryinth |
| elondria42012-28-07, 07:30 AM | Nothing wrong with not liking 3.x while liking Eberron as a setting. I'd suggest you get ahold of one of the old AD&D 2nd edition to D&D 3.0 conversion guides and just work in reverse for the game statistics and what not. I'm really not sure at all how some of the things would work in 2nd edition, it's been far too long for me since the time I last played 2nd edition, I'd have to break out the boxes upon boxes of 2nd edition stuff to see, and that's not something I'd relish doing lol |

| elondir12-28-07, 11:05 AM | Well, for a 3.x to 2e conversion, first cut the racial bonuses in half. The rest of the race parts should be fairly direct. I would give every Kalashtar a wild talent. Forget about feats and PrCs. Change skills and some feats to the relevant nonweapon proficiencies. The artificer is a tricky one, you'll have to decide on your own what the best route to take would be, since 2e doesn't have hard and fast magic item creation rules. The magic items should be fairly easy to convert. Monster conversions would be interesting. I think if you can figure out a way to convert 3.5 monsters to 2e, put it on the board here. Basically balance the creature for its intended party level, keeping the concept of the creature all-important. I hope this helps. Remember to tone down the races and classes to balance against 2e core. In other words, dramatically cut down the class and race abilities. I personally would not use kits. |
| Just another user01-01-08, 06:20 PM | it is not weird at all, I always thought that Eberron is a really old style D&D setting in some of its idea, like with NPCs being normally weaker than PCs (0 level characters) or the need to create unusual components to create magic items, for example. About a conversion I'm afraid a mechanical conversion wouldn't be worth the effort (that conversion book was worse than useless IMHO), I believe you would do better trying to make a conversion by concept, i.e look at the 3.5 stats and recreate the 2nd edition character that best represent it, following more tha spirit of the rules than the RAW. |
| Jedi_Master_Trobon01-02-08, 01:44 AM | Thanks for the ideas everyone. |
| Romtos01-02-08, 08:46 AM | It is blasphemy! I refuse to acknowledge the possibility of even a remote connection between Holy Eberron and ancient evils like AD&D. I support every zealotry against these incursions! I'm willing to fuse myself with a demon and celestial, thereby creating a giant Pillar of Light, for this can be used as the basis of a believe, purely designed to start an Holy Inquisition against foul creatures who support ideas like this. Also, I like 3.5. |

| skrap-san01-04-08, 04:22 AM | I must admit really like the idea. I would never do it myself given that I don't understand jack of the rules in second edition, mostly since i haven't played anything else than 3.5. But hat of to you for both getting a really cool setting and keeping the rule sett you prefer. |
| RadicalTaoist01-04-08, 10:36 AM | Alas, poor Eberron! I may have disliketh thee, I wisheth thee not this fate. Hey. Last I checked no one of us owns the setting. He can play it any way he wants. If he wants to adapt AD&D, or Burning Wheel, or Exalted, or Warhammer to Eberron? 'Snone of our damn business. |
| Romtos01-04-08, 12:53 PM | Hey. Last I checked no one of us owns the setting. He can play it any way he wants. If he wants to adapt AD&D, or Burning Wheel, or Exalted, or Warhammer to Eberron? 'Snone of our damn business. It most surely is! I think we might need to put small microphones in every sourcebook, to make sure their content is used the way they were meant to be. This is of course necessary to maintain the intellectuel property of the writer. Also, we might want to find a way to register every customer of a sourcebook and compare their purchases. That way, we can rule out any possibility of cruel never-intented combinations within the game. |
| elondir01-04-08, 01:23 PM | So why don't we try writing up the four races and two classes (magewright and artificer) for 2e, right here, right now? I'd start but I'm rather busy at the moment. Warforged Kalashtar Changeling Shifter Artificer Magewright |
| Joni-san01-06-08, 04:09 AM | IIRC There was some effort to convert Eberron races into BD&D stats in the Mystara forum a while back. |
| Alas01-09-08, 11:28 AM | If you're going 1st edition, you shouldn't have to convert the magewright, since there were no "NPC classes" in those rules. The village magewright would just be a 0-level human with the special ability to craft alchemical items, wouldn't it? A more skilled magewright would probably have to be an actual magic-user. (Makes the Dragonmark that much more important for the economy, I should think.) PS: OSRIC (http://www.knights-n-knaves.com/osric/), for those of you without your old books. |
| ChaoticGood01-12-08, 12:28 AM | The big question in my mind is, how to handle dragonmarks in a mechanic without feats? Can you logically treat them as Non-Weapon Proficiencies, or do you have to write a whole new ruleset for them? Shifters shouldn't be difficult to convert. Cut their shifting ability bonuses down by one each, and most of the special abilities require no conversion at all. Warforged will be more difficult, and more likely to be typecast as average melee fighters, since you don't have feats to let them improve or replace their built-in armor. |
| Garandene_Lyrandar01-13-08, 01:21 AM | Give the warforged fighter something along the lines of substitution levels which allows hiim to add an AC bonus as he grows in levels. But we cannot tell you what to do, use your players as guinea pigs, as long as you're having fun it dosn't matter about the rules. In my first game we played ADnd even though 3.5 was out, all the players had sort of animal companions (I have a large red dragon and a friend of mine had a wolf which could use cure light wounds at will) oh and whenever we got in trouble the DMs trusty character killed all of the enemies in a spectacular way without even rolling a die! So have fun! |
| ChaoticGood01-13-08, 02:08 AM | Well, at least you had fun being second-fiddle to the DMNPC... Good for you! |
| Just another user01-13-08, 07:48 AM | The big question in my mind is, how to handle dragonmarks in a mechanic without feats? Can you logically treat them as Non-Weapon Proficiencies, or do you have to write a whole new ruleset for them? I can't see why not, NWP were quite flexible (as in "the GM can do whatever he want" flexible). For example, I remember in Al-Qadim a NWP that give to anyone the option to use a 1st level spell once a day, you could just do something like that for dragonmarks. but a better option could be make "dragonmarked" a kit, you'd have to take it at 1st level but flexibility was never AD&D big strength. IMOH all this (shifter powers and warforged body) can be done with NWP, too. They are a more flexibile mechanic that people seems to think, even because AD&D wasn't so obsessed with game balance as the newer editions. Kits would work, too. Actually kits for warforged body would be perfect. |
