My gaming group is currently winding down our current D&D game, which is a Home Cooked world that is combinations of like everything (Realms, Raven loft, Eberron, Rokugan, Our own home cooked worlds, and even Athas!) and we enjoyed it greatly! Part of it of course is that most of us have a say on the world, our big binder containing all that info that has all our handwriting and printed stuff mismatching about the place.

Now we're taking a break, and heading into D20 modern. We were sort of excited with it, wanting to bring about that slick modern feel. Then one of us got their hand on Urban Arcana, which is great and all, but we just weren't as excited. We thought maybe we could spice it up, maybe modernizing our own world for it, but we thought that would be a pain and only bring about the same enemies, plots and such.
Then I got the bright idea of Modern Eberron, and everyone loved the idea. We all started by just making our characters using both rules from both books. Classes are all D20 modern, and we're starting 1st level so as to flesh out things here and there as we go. I'm DMing, and so made a Warforged NPC who is a 1st level tough hero, who was found by the other characters. We are using the Dragonmark houses, and Eberron is there, but Sharn is now like New York, and lightning rail Subway are all about, and various other features are here. We have not started to play yet, but I'm still trying to get the flavor together.
Anybody have ideas on this? How do you think classes and feats work together? How do you think the modern Eberron might look or work? What elements of history could be used?
This would work great for our campaign and maybe give ideas to others so please speak up!

Well, I've never played D20 modern, but I'd say you've got a great idea there. Really, the only questions that need to be answered are a sort of simple checklist.

What role do the various religions of Eberron play?

Has the geography of the planet changed?

Have political boundaries changed?

What state is the Mournland in? Resettled, or still a blight? If settled, to what degree and by who? If still blighted, has it gotten worse, or has it faded to a mere wasteland?

Are the moons still there?

Has the Mark of Death returned?

What's going on between the Kalashtar and the Inspired?

Is King Kaius I still "alive"?

How settled is Xen'Drik?

What have the Dragons and the various Druidic orders been doing about the modernization of the world?

Is Thrane still a theocracy?

Are the Five Nations united once again? If so, how strongly?

Have there been any major wars?

Have the seals against Xoriat been broken?

I'll post more if I think of any ^^;;;

But i had my D&D game last week and it took a bit for me to look over your questions. thought your question lead me to answer to other questions.
so.
Most of the stuff going on, will be addressed as we play and agree on the group, as long as their not stringently part of the the campaign.

What role do the various religions of Eberron play?
This-is something that would happen in play; We definitely want to present modern cultures, it's one of the main reasons beside gun play and technology, to have a chance to use modern cultures, be it religion ( one character maybe a catholic and abhors magic) to hip hop culture (our Shifter Thief) and also nationality ( a Cuban Halfling named Domingo) and even regional ( We're using Sharn but many of the characters are survivors from Cyre)

Has the geography of the planet changed?
Not too much. Metropolis's are bigger, generally, with cities like Sharn being reflective of big city like New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles, with wide highways kris crossing the landscape

Have political boundaries changed?
I don' t know about all groups to take away form Khorvaire, but I did want to introduce such things as capitalism and socialism to the story for the sake of using them to shake things up on occasion.

What state is the Mournland in? Resettled, or still a blight? If settled, to what degree and by who? If still blighted, has it gotten worse, or has it faded to a mere wasteland?

Think Hiroshima

Are the moons still there?

yes and we have been on them

Has the Mark of Death returned?

An Urban Legend to some, it's revered like the Fountain of Youth and the Jersey Devil

What's going on between the Kalashtar and the Inspired?
Need to research more on that

Is King Kaius I still "alive"?
Need to research more on that

How settled is Xen'Drik?
I wan to reflect the Latin American Countries and how colonization and later on revolution, may present itself there.

What have the Dragons and the various Druidic orders been doing about the modernization of the world?
Need to research more on that

Is Thrane still a theocracy?
Possibly, Need to research more on that

Are the Five Nations united once again? If so, how strongly?
United Nations Security Council

Have there been any major wars?
hmmm

Have the seals against Xoriat been broken?
Need to research more on that

Need to research, but hopefully this board will spring some new ideas.

This is an extremely cool idea...

The whole shifter rogue analoguing with hip-hop culture brings to mind Samurai Champloo.
