Eberron "Novels" [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-03-04, 01:38 AM I know I can't be the only one who loved the graphic-novel images strewn throughout the campaign setting, and I was just thinking... am I the only one would would vastly prefer a series of graphic novels exemplifying the noir elements of Eberron over any number of "typical" fantasy novels? I mean, I hope that the novels exemplify the same thing (intrigue and noir, and overall awesomeness), but with the artists that they've already used, they could make something that would have the potential to draw in other people to the world of Eberron, and maybe the game...

But mostly, I just wanna see whole comic books full of those illustrations. They're just so awesome, and I think helped me get into the world more than any other illustrations from any gaming books (the half-elf Master Inquisitive being one of the best comic-book-pages I've seen). I'm greedy... I want more darn it!

Uh... discuss (or something). :D

I think the Art and whole feel of the campaign setting is awesome and that the art is probably the single largest contributor to the feel of the book. I just want all future releases for eberron to be FULL COLOUR with the same type of art mixing the comic style with the detailed illustrations of the races etc.

The fact that Sharn: City of Towers is supposed to only be four colours has me some what vexxed but guess we will see. Personally I feel that if the books are going to be released in the same quality as the campaign setting they should make them full colour and charge full price. As I plan on using the book for a very long time I really don't mind spending the extra cash and getting it in full colour with comic illustrations and all.

Because "four-color" is publishing-speak for "full-color" (or darn close to it), which wouldn't be a step backward.

As for the comic book idea, I like it! Traditional novels are less expensive and faster to produce, and I look forward to them, but an Eberron graphic novel would be cool to see.

08-03-04, 04:42 PM I believe a Graphic Novel for Eberron is a brilliant idea. I am more of a novel reader, but a fantasy series of graphic novels would definitely intice even me. Fantasy Art is truly what gets me inside the mood of a setting or genre and I think Graphic novels would be primo.

I already pick up enough other comics, why not an Eberron one? (so long as its nothign like that free comic book day D&D one... that was just sad...)

08-04-04, 03:24 PM I don't care, just give it to me! An Eberron graphic novel would be awesome. Maybe hire out some talent from Dark Horse, or the guys who did the "World War I but with magic" comic Arrowsmith. It's done by Wildstorm. They have the feel down pretty well I think.

Indeed the Eberron CSB is printed in four colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black - in little dots to create the illusion of full color) + they may have snuck another ink in there, (but I don't think so) and the cover is printed in "6 colors" with the above mentioned inks plus a spot varnish and dull varnish.

I am not trying to sound like a know-it-all, just thought maybe people would be interested. Johhny is right that 4-color process is publishing speak for "full-color". So when you see 4-color it usually means "full color" (it "could" mean four individual colors, but the cost is about the same - got to buy the ink anyways - to get the four process colors, you might as well do it full color) To save money the next step down would be 2 color (like some of the old 2nd ed stuff = Black text + for example, blue for backgrounds etc...).

I would hope that if Wizards does this they will make Kalman Andrasovszky the main artist on the project; his work really pulls Eberron together for me, much as it does with d20 Modern. The comic sequences lend to the idea of making the setting cinematic in a visual way that traditional novels just can't accomplish. WotC guys, if you read this thread -- this idea will sell.:angel: -- Ramses

08-19-04, 06:49 PM This would be a good way to introduce Eberron to the world, and if it showcases the races and areas, and the Last War, I could give them to my players who probably don't want to read a whole lot, yet still get a good feel for the setting

You know...maybe I should just do a up a fanfic version of an eberron graphic novel...it'd take me a few months but it might be kind of a fun project...

OOOoooo! Lemme know if you plan on doing this. I have some good ideas for something like this. Something that would paint Karnnath in a more positive light. (I have a feeling that Karnnath is going to be painted as "evil" because of the undead troops).

I could, of course, stretch my somewhat unused writing abilities too if you so wished... :)

Though first of all, realize that even though I am a fine artist, my medium is usually photography.

I think what I might do is blend computer colored black and white photographs with hand drawn characters...

Dunno yet.

08-21-04, 01:44 PM This is a very good idea. I eagerly anticipate the novels, but a graphic novel would be wonderful. The "nominations" for artists are all very good, and I would like to add to that list the folks responsible for adapting George R. R. Martin's 'The Hedge Knight" to graphic novel form: Roaring Studios / Dabel Brothers / Devil's Due. The art isn't 100% similar to that in the Eberron book (easily rectifiable), but as far as their ability to capture the feel of a particular setting these guys are awesome.

08-21-04, 03:42 PM I don't know a whole lot about comic or comic artists, but I do know that I don't get much opportunity to read novels(I started rereading the wheel of time books over a year ago and I have three chapters left on shadow rising book four). So the perfect solution is the graphic novel. This is a great way for WotC to reach a broader group of readers. I read the whitehearth mini novel that came with shadows, but I probably will never purchase a dnd novel. An Eberron graphic novel on the other hand, I'll be on the waiting list for.

08-21-04, 05:37 PM While Diterlizzi is and allways will be "'da Man", his art-style isn't that suitable for Eberron IMO, allthough he propably could do a piece that would fit. I'll have to check his gallery later on.

I'd also nominate DMAC (That guy is just amazing). There's just one small problem; does he want to do it?

I'd also nominate Dana Knutson, Steve Prescott and Mark Tedin (the three of them made the art we saw in Dragon Mag.), Matt Cavotta (Dungeon 111 cover, The LoB) and the other Artists who made art for Eberron.

It would be fun to try a one page piece along the lines of the chapter start illustrations from the ECS. Anyone have any ideas for a very short script/piece of flavor text that'd work?
