I hear Indiana Jones, post World War 1, 1700's, Sam Spade (Maltese Falcon), etc. I think it's worthwhile checking out the history of real world event called The Thirty Years War. It tore up the Holy Roman Empire (most of which is todays Germany). Pitted many factions against each other in what was a somewhat stable empire. Looking it over, it bears very striking resemblances to Eberron's last war. Google it for more info. Thyme |

Eberron is Indianna Jones teaming up with the three musketeers to save the maltese falcon from Professor Moriarty on the Island of Doctor Moreau. Meanwhile agents of the Illuminati are trying to track down Tarzan to con him into stealing the Eye of Horus from Wonder Woman. But I guess you have already figured this out. The politcal and demographic repercussions of the 30 years war do give a good idea of the kind of political climate of Eberron. Thanks for the reminder, I shall have to brush up a little on that part of history. |

Was exactly that time. France had a big part in that war. Forgot to post a few of the reasons I saw more similarities for that time. Technology was booming at that time.. Literally. Though firearms and artillery had been around for awhile, they did not receive the techinal and tactical expertise to put them into proper use until the Thirty Years War. The tactics of Gustavus Adolphus alone stayed influential for years afterwards. The parallel to the tech in that time is obviously reflected through Eberrons magic and magic items. Like the 1600's of the thirty years war, Eberron is a world just coming out of the medieval/rennaisance period and dealing with all the new ideas and technologies that have come about all of a sudden due to a long and devastating war. They answered to her alone, but not long before the end of the last war the Council of Cardinals disbanded this group. This Elite guard still exists, in part, secretly allied to some loyalists of the Knights of Thrane. While this may seem to be at odds, this secret alliance serves the same purpose, they both want to see the church and the state seperate again. Some ex-keeper guards are now in the service of the Knights to better fill this need. The remnants of the keeper's guard that have not joined the Knights, been put to the sword, exiled, imprisoned or blackmailed into quitting now work as "renegades" taking on those tasks of subterfuge that would otherwise get the Knights in way too much trouble. This is dangerous because only a few of the knights are in on this conspiracy and some of these tasks go directly against the will of the Cardinals. I picture them as an elite group of fighter/rogues with the odd cleric and wizard thrown in. |

In Breland, one can liken the Musketeers to the knights of the King's Citadel. The members of the King's Citadel are the direct agents of the Brelish Crown. They are concerned with forces that threaten the entire city or the kingdom itself. Within the Citadel are the King's Dark Lanterns, the intelligence division of the Citadel (more like Richelieu's agents). More "Musketeer-y" are the King's Swords, a group of elite warriors and the King's Shields, charged with protecting the King and his closest family members and associates (the same official role as the Musketeers). Elsewhere in Khorvaire, a couple of potential Musketeer-type organizations suggest themselves. In Thrane, the Crown Knights, or Knights of Thrane, are in theory in service to the crown, not the Flame. And High Cardinal Krozen of the Church of the Silver Flame (ECS, p. 209) sounds like a very Richelieu-esque character. There's probably an appropriate group in Aundair too, but I can't seem to find it. Just a few thoughts. |
