Celestia is a free program that allows visualization of other star systems.

This is a setup to enable visualization of Eberron's moons. I recalculated the periods for each moon using Kepler's second law [T^2/R^3 = 4 pi^2/(G*Meberron)]. If you don't like these shorter periods, just change the period to the number of days you want.

Zarantyr is plain HUGE in the night sky.

You need to assign a star first. Make a text file named eberron.stc and put the following in it:

For Lharvion's texture, just make a light grey jpg that is 512 x 256 and draw a black gash in the middle half. Put it in c:\program files\celestia\extras\eberron\textures\m edres directory.

Put these in your c:\program files\celestia\extras\eberron directory and enjoy!

Hmm, all I needed were three files, as typed: eberron.stc, eberron.ssc, and lharvion.jpg. I wonder why it didn't work? I thought I saw a typo that wouldn't go away - put the texture in medres, not m edres, but other than that it should work. What version of Celestia are you using? I can send you a zip of my files if you give me your email address.

I've done some calculations on this... Zarantyr is well within its Roche Limit unless it is close to the same mass as Eberron, which would cause insanely high tides, and so is Olarune. They should be torn apart. Furthermore the tide at the equator created by Zarantyr would be 70 meters if Zarantyr were the same density as our moon, compared to our 84 cm tides here. Fixing the Roche Limit problem (by setting Zarantyr density = 3.455 our moon's density and Olarune = 2.02 our moon's mass density) the Zarantyr high tide is 4.859 km higher than its low tide, and Olarune's high tide is 319 m higher than its low tide, which means only mountainous regions would be inhabitable on the planet due to the huge flooding.

EDIT:

Using the distances and Saturn's ring mass density (I'm asking on the board for a good value), the Ring of Siberys produces a 21 m constant high tide at the equator and is 43 m lower at the poles. (It adds a very slight oblateness to Eberron)

The solar tide on Eberron is only 4.48 cm due to the fact that Eberron is smaller than Earth, solving for mass based on the fact that Eberron has Earth-normal gravity and using mass density and the maps (which suggest that Eberron has a circumference of 15000 mi).

Discounting Zarantyr and Olarune, the other tides amount to a maximum fluctuation of 109 cm between the highest high tide and the lowest low tide.

Let's look at increasing their distances from Eberron to see how they affect things.

Adding 100,000km to all of the semimajor axes produces realistic tides and increases the periods to closer to what we might expect. It also shrinks the disks proportionally.

Finally, we can use Kepler's second law to calculate the distance from Eberron based on the period, which is probably better for the campaign since the phases are more interesting than the actual distances. This rearranges the moons' order and will shrink the disks much more. But this is for another time.

BTW, I don't want you to think that I'm discounting your hard work to put the Eberron solar system into "real world" terms ... I think it's really interesting.

However, I do need to point out that your calculations might be "off" because unlike Saturn, Eberron's ring is not formed from bits of rock, it's made up of the remains of a progenitor dragon ... that could certainly account for the fact that Eberron doesn't have a 21m tide at the equator! :)

The "real" question, here, is why DOESN'T Eberron have a 4km high tide thanks to Zarantyr and Olarune? And, of course, "the designers didn't think of that" doesn't count. Likewise, "it's magic" is too simple ... what kind of magic might be at work? What could happen if that magic ever fails?

While a true statement... it is inaccurate. The deal with the progenitor dragon is a myth ... at least according to the way that KB tells it. So if it is a myth, then it is a myth created to explain how the planet, the ring, and the underground came to be. So ... how do you know that the remains aren't bits of rock now?

Fixed everything by using Kepler to calculate distance based on period. The highest high tide now equals 236 cm, the disks are all roughly moon-sized, and there are no Roche limit problems. Notice that the moons have changed order from near to far.

Partially because:

A) the fact that it's a creation "myth" doesn't mean that it can't also have elements of literal truth ... whether the ring/planet/underdark is REALLY Siberys/Eberron/Khyber is not spelled out one way or ther other. It need not be wholly real nor wholly myth.

B) no one who's ever attempted to travel up to the ring has come back to talk about it ... that leads me to believe it's not just rock. Other environmental factors can be dealt with by magic ... so what's the problem up there?

C) Siberys shards apparently fall from the ring, BUT they only land in certain places (like, NOT Sarlona) ... is that a feature of the ring, or the land beneath?

Other details lead me to believe that things are NOT the way they should be ... the lack of crippling tides and the very existance of Zarantyr, for example. As a dedicated Eberron-ite, I'm not about to write these issues off as simply "Keith didn't think about that" ;)

True, but that messes up the "awesomeness" of looking up into the night sky and seeing it "completely filled" with Zarantyr! :)

True, but there's plenty of spells that can deal with a lack of air ... not to mention that WF don't breathe at all and it would be pretty silly not to send a couple of them, too.

BTW, I'm not just trying to be a jerk :) The best part, IMO, about Eberron is the amount of mystery that the setting maintains so well. What are the dragonmarks, really? What happened to that 13th moon? The Mourning? Who's the Lord of Blades? And, so on.

One possibility that would screw over what you're doing here is that the Moons might not be physical objects at all, but rather illusory projections of the planes onto the Material.

to everyone: I made a yellow-gold ring pattern. simply replace the saturn_rings.png file in textures->lores with this picture (keeping the filename).

I love going to Eberron and then backing off just far enough to see the planet and all of the moons then set the timeframe forward about 1000x to see everything orbiting! It just looks so cool. You can even turn the lables on to see exactly which one is which ... awesome!!!!

BTW, does anyone know how to properly view the "night sky" from Eberron?

When I go to Eberron, it leaves you looking right at the planet, almost full screen, and I'd like to "turn around" to look up into the sky and see the ring and the moons from various places on Eberron's surface ... I just started playing with Celestia, so I'm not sure how to do that.

Anyone know?

Another quick Celestia question ... what am I doing wrong in that neither the ring texture nor the planet texture ever show up?

If I replace the saturn-rings.png with the eberron-rings.png (or modify the .ssc file and switch saturn with eberron) I only get a solid while ring.

And, regardless of where I put it, I get no texture on the planet....

Unfortunately, I overwrote the old file.

To do that just convert the "Average distance from Eberron" into km (by multiplying by 1.61) and putting it in the SemiMajorAxis field for each moon in the ssc file. Here's a link to the article.

The orbits will still have the same periods as the calendar.

If you want the Keplerian periods use T = squareroot(R^3 * (4 * pi^2) / (G * M )) where T is the period, G is Newton's Gravitational Constant = 6.668*10^-11, and M is the mass of Eberron = 2.19948*10^24 kg.

Here are the files I have made. They aren't exactly scientifically accurate, and the periods don't match the lunar calendar, but it gives a fair representation I think. I've also assumed an Earth-sized Eberron, and kept the distances as presented in the Dragonshard. There's also an orbit for Crya in there. If you can't get the ring to render, check what I put and see if there is a difference.

I'm having a problem with this. I followed all the directions when making the text files, adding eberron's texture, and following the procedure to bring the planet up on screen. However all I get is a zoom in on either sol or mercury. Does anyone know whats causing this? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Download Celestia from their site and install it.

Then, follow elondir's directions in his posts -- creating the files from his listings in this thread. Just re-read the whole thread and you'll probably have all of your setup issues settled for you. Watch out for the sizes of the textures you create....

That's all you'll need to do, really.

Celestia always centers on Sol when you run it ... you have to type the "Enter" key and then type "eberronspace." in the "popup" window that opens at the bottom of the Celestia window.

Then, type the "1" key to set Eberron (the first planet) as your target -- you'll see the name written out in the upper left corner of the Celestia window, and then type the "G" key to Go There.

Once you arrive, you can use the mouse to change your view of the planet/moons and move around the Eberron system.

Also, try backing away a little and hitting the "L" key a couple of times to set everything in motion by turning up the speed of time and the "M" key to label the moons!

BTW, here is the original eberron.ssc before Elondir applied "real life" physics to it! :)

I didn't mean for compression purposes. I meant for convenient distribution. Additionally, I was hoping the textures could be included as well.

It would be much easier to have the instructions of how to set up Celestia and interact with the system within a text file in the zip, along with all of the files necessary to create the setup.

hey all,

first of all THank You for all your Hard Work on This, I got Eberron Running and it looks Awesome, but a couple things i wouold like to add/ask

First, What is the name for the Eberron Planet Surface Texture, I want to customize, but i can't seem to get the right file so i thought i'd ask straight out. Apologies if it is a repeat, but i've read this whole thread a few times and it isn't straight forwarrd enough for me to make outu

Second Observations

Leaving eberron running at a million speed is interesting first of all ( and im using the second 'more realistic' 'less true to data' version )

The Ring of Siberous Can Leave a Big honking Shadow on Eberron, Am i the only one who get's this? Do i have the tilt the wrong way or sometthing or does Eberron have steady Winters in the northern Hemisphere as the ring of Siberous Blocks Larges portions of sunlight? EDIT Rechecked my Times, Man Eberron Must have some preety savage winter's the ring's shaddow sits on both the northern and southern hemisphere for like 4 months out of the year when the pole is furtherest away during that time anyway ;0



And as well am i the only one noticing the potential for fair numbebs of lengthy solar eclipses, Zarantyr, Therendor, and Eyre can all (and the other's to a much lesser extent) leave a Large Shadow on the Planet on a preety regular basis when it's all three ( Zarantyr would leave a shadow about the size of a coke can on the map between the cover of the front page of the ECS, Therendor a Quater and Eyre a Penny) Creppy Eclipses and Ice Ages might be working their way into my game!

Anyway another technical question, Is their anyway for my to set a 'Dark Texture' for the times the surface of Eberron get's shaddowed as aposed to pitch blackness ( More for the Ring Shaddow then the Moons )

I'm with you. If someone had an Eberron setup to share, it'd be easiest for everyone else if they'd zip their textures/etc and such.

It's easy enough to copy and paste the setup files, but most of us are lacking textures or the ability or capacity to make our own.

I added the 13th moon, way out there on an orbit so slow it'll stay remote forever. The name comes from Faiths of Eberron, Blood of Vol chapter.

I haven't made any adjustments for a long time. If anyone has improved on it, drop me an e-mail and I'll upload the changes for everyone to enjoy :)

On a side note, given the different combinations that the moons can take due to the conflicting material out there. I have basically four different ways to set up the moons:

1) Set up per the Baker article and calculate the rotations based on the given distances.

2) Set up per the calendar utility and calculate the distances based from that data.

3) Keep the order of the moons per the article but assign the orbital timing and distances per the calander utility, such that Zarantyr orbits every 28 days, Olarune 35 etc..

4) Keep the order of the article and assign the revolutions per the utility for each moon. (i.e. Zarantyr is the closest moon, but takes 77 days to complete a revolution.) This would make both the article and the utility correct, but slap physics in the face with the proverbial mackeral.

Any thoughts?

Here is Eberron sans the moons. Here are some on the tweaks I made to Eberron:

1) Reversed Eberron's rotation to allow the sun to rise in the west.
2) Set the Ring of Siberys to center on the Roche Limit (9800 km).
3) Set orbit of 336 days, this brought Eberron closer to the sun.
4) Slowed Eberron's rotation to allow for a 24 hour day.
5) Increased size of Eberron to accomodate the Frostfell

The rest of the modifications are to the sun to allow for a similar environment.

6) Dropped the class of the star from a G2V to a G3V.
7) Decreased Luminosity, Magnitude and Diameter accordingly.

Geographical observation. Thick forestation typically forms on the windward side of mountains (see Q'barra, Lhazaar, & Eldeen Reaches). Thin vegetation areas, deserts & plains for on the leeward side of mountains (See Talenta, Blade Desrt & Demon Wastes).

So, in order to accommodate these geograpical elements, one would need to reverse the wind patterns of the northern hemisphere of Eberron (and in turn, the same would happen in the southern hemisphere). In order to accomplish that, one would need to reverse the rotation of Eberron. Side effects may include: sun rising in the west, low birth weight, and low resale value on your home.

It came from a tv commercial that ran a couple years back that was mocking all these medication adds.....especially the side affects aspect.

It started off with headache, low birth weight, bloating, constipation, **** leakage, insomnia......as it went on...and on.... the side affects started to include: growth of a third eye, possession by the devil, low resale value on your home, etc.

That is where it came from. Never did catch all the side affects. Only time I ever remember watching TV, hoping to see a commercial.

For some reason, I thought I needed to add some levity. Go figure.

ooo. That was the fun part. Well, Eberron's solar orbit is considered to be 336 days long. This would move the planet in considerably from the standard 1 AU. If so, the radiation balance of Eberron would be considerably higher than that of Earth with the same size star. So through substitution, I was able to solve for the two body orbit equation, solar insolation, tha solar mass/radius/temperature proportionality, and the solar mass/radius/density proportionality. Keeping the known orbit (336 days), an assumed similar radiation balance to Earth (1366 W/m^2), and Sol as the basis of comparison, I was able to get an approximate solar surface temperature of 5636 K, a .935 AU orbit for Eberron, as well as solar radius, mass, luminosity and density.

So basically, I totally geeked out. :P

Based on the Solar Classification scale and the values I estimated via the above, I classified "Dol Arrah" as a G3V star.

With the radius I estimated for Eberron (6580.09 km), planetary density (same as earth 5,520 kg/m^3), and lunar density (assuming same as moon for all satellites 3,340 kg/m^3), I am getting a Roche limit for solids to be 9,800 km from the center of Eberron.

Remember Eberron is smaller than Earth, though - look at the map scale. I estimate a 15,000 mile circumference. That changes its mass to accomodate for g=9.8 m/s^2, and then redo your calculation.

Where did you estimate from?

Me... I scaled the inner cover of the ECS and added in the Frostfell from the PGtE. If you take the north-south measurement from the ECS, you will definitely notice that we do not have the whole E-W picture of Eberron. But with the ECS, PGtE, and SoX we do have a near pole to pole picture of Eberron. After all was said and done, my estimation for Eb ended up being bigger than Earth.

Also, I believe the Roche limit would be closer for a smaller planet. For my larger Eb, I am not running into a Roche issue from the article distances. Unless you have much lighter densities for your satellites than that of the moon.

This gets more complicated though, since you don't see all the poles, and the maps might be distorted east to west. For all we know, the inside cover of the ECS could be a Mercator projection. I assumed it was equirectangular cut off at the poles and stretched vertically. I also remember somewhere someone asked Kieth Baker how far the trip across the Barren Sea was, and he mentioned something about "judging by the maps...".

It's reasons like this why I wish WotC (and TSR before them) would put a little math into their maps and make maps that actually have some projection to them, even if it's just equirectangular. As they are, we must assume that they are equidistant orthonormal equal-area maps, which are only possible on a globe. I mean, if you're in the business of world building, at least make the ice caps span the whole map side to side and make the left and right edges match up when you curl them. At least Mystara had a world map with an actual projection.

Now that I think about it, it would be awesome if WotC produced a digital globe texture for Eberron, like Toril had in the FR Atlas and Mystara has out on the net somewhere.

Even so, the Frostfell is a 4000 mi x 5000 mi continent that is encapsulated 90% on the northern polar cap. A small edge is visible to the NW of Khorvaire. I went with the assumption that the remainder of the Frostfell was *just* outside the scope of the ECS inside cover map, with the possibility a few islands were overlooked. That gave me a minimum circumferencial distance to run with. Just based on those two maps, Eberron cannot be any smaller than the radius I posted, assuming a "standard" oblate spheroid. That leaves an enormous area for a lost continent or what have you in the Barren Sea. Even the current lines do not match up, that at least implies that the E & W edges do not perfectly line-up.

FYI - that would give Eberron a 10.12 m/s^2 gravity. Nothing major, you could even conceiveable drop the density of Eberron down a smidge <-- highly technical term <-- to get the gravity to line back up with Earth norm.

Here is something interesting. Zarantyr is spec'd as being pearly white. In my digging through astronomical objects, this would mean an albedo between .80 & .99. So on top of Zarantyr being approximately 15x the size of our moon in the sky, it will also be 7-8x more reflective. If I am getting a feel for this correctly, that would mean that when Zarantyr is full (and not eclipsed) we would be looking at an early morning/late evening sort of illumination, if not brighter.

Back to the grindstone.........who am I kidding, I am enjoying the crap out of this.

Well, I have all the moons in for my first iteration of this. I may just drop the planet gravity to earth norm just for GP.

Anyhow, I found some information on tidal locking and based on the article distances, the first 10 moons, barring external perturbacious effects, are tidally locked. Meaning, that only one face is presented to Eberron. This works very well for those certain lunar aspects (the anvil, the eye, etc.) that give the moons their character.

The last two moons, for the article mock up, would tidally lock in 11M & 7.5M years, respectively. Now for the 4.5B year old earth, this would be a gimme, they would also be locked. However, following the creation myth and the general timeline that I have been able to find, these moons could conceivably be still rotating under their own power.

Any thoughts? How old would you say Eberron is?

Here it is. It is very basic. Have colored the moons, all lunar orbits are circular, all the texture names are dummies, and all moons are tidally locked. I have some ideas for textures, and I will post them when complete. I will also be generating 3 other versions of this file with the different moon configurations mentioned previously. I set the Epoch for this system as 4/1/2004....the release date for the ECS. Currently, if you go to that date, all moons will line-up. As more info becomes available, I will try to incorporate them into the file to add variety to the lunar orbits. I look forward to your input.

The rings I used are a Saturn Ring File that I renamed.

This file is based off the information from the Keith Baker article. The distance to the moons was calculated by taking the "Mean distance between" from the article and adding the radii of the planet & the moon in question.

I will post improvements, expansions to these files as time permits.

OK, I am a little geeked. Just set a geosync orbit from the planet surface to watch the sky. Kinda strange without having any of the moons with angles to the ecliptic, but I digress...

Zarantyr & Olarune *appear* to travel in the opposite direction of the rest of the moons....makes sense, but it did not strike me until I watched it. And then the kicker....Olarune's orbit is *almost* geosynchronous. I takes about 13 weeks from moonrise to moonset. It is way too groovy.
